Vegas bans 24hr quickies

THE late-night "quickie" weddings Las Vegas is famous for are to become a thing of the past.

The city's marriage bureau has approved new opening times that will end round-the-clock ceremonies.

Until the changes, lovebirds and celebrities who were often the worse for wear could get hitched in the small hours on Fridays, Saturday and holidays.

But from next Wednesday anyone wanting to tie the knot will have to do it between the hours of 8am and midnight, no matter what day of the week it is.

Officials say the moves will affect less than four per cent of the licenses issued by the bureau and save £105,000 a year.

Pop star Britney Spears, socialite Nicky Hilton, and actors Demi Moore and Bruce Willis all wed in the small hours in Las Vegas.

All three unions ended in divorce - Britney's, to childhood pal Jason Alexander, lasted just 55 hours.

Charlotte Richards, of the 24-hour Little White Wedding Chapel where Britney's wedding took place, said she was saddened by the change.

"Let’s face it, man, this is Las Vegas. This is the marriage capital of the world," she said.

"People just automatically think, 'Let’s go to Las Vegas! They’re open all night!'"

She added pre-dawn weddings were popular among members of the military, lovers driving in from Southern California and celebrities.

"All the stars come out at night," she said. "People that are high profile, when they come down to Las Vegas to get married, they don't want to come in the middle of the day when people are around. They like the privacy."
