Figured I would start posting these here. I'll just add a new reply to this thread every week. I'm sure there are plenty of people around here who like looking at numbers and that sort of shit (I'm one of them), so why not.

The previous week's software sales get released on Wednesday night, and the previous week's hardware sales gets released on Thursday night.

But for now, I'll start with the charts that got released last week, since they're insane. (I'm copy/pasting from the website I write for, so it's already all color coded, but doesn't look as good on a black background -- so go change your theme to Wackbag Professional to make the thread look MORE GOODER.)

ANYWAY:

May 22 to 28

The big news this week is the release of New Super Mario Bros., which sold just under 900k in its fist week. This has helped the game become the 5th biggest first week sales for a Nintendo published game ever, or in other words, the biggest first week for a non-Pokemon game Nintendo has ever published.

The release of New Super Mario Bros. pushed sales of the DS Lite to 285k for the week, up from last week's sales of 160k. As of next week, the DS Lite will have crossed the 2 million sold mark.

In related news, 8 people bought an Xbox.

Fucking Japanese are SOOOOO xenophobic and Anti-American. Over 27,000 PS1 portable sold and a little over 1200 Xbox 360. Why MS is breaking their ass to get into the japanese market no longer makes sense. They WILL NOT buy western produced hardgoods because they are deemed "inferior". The only exception off the top of my head is the iPOD.

I think it has more to do with the preference of games rather than the fact that the console is American. If MGS4 and Final Fantasy 13 were released on the 360, it would probably doom the PS3 because of it's price.

Uh dude? The "PS1 Portable" (what) isn't American. Sony is a Japanese company.

And I think Xbox tanks there because it simply doesn't have the kind of games they like, not because it's American, as the iPod proves. They're all FPS/war games/etc that aren't popular in Japan.

But yeah, how about those DS Lite sales, eh?

I think what he meant was he finds it odd that the PSP outsells the 360.

But more importantly...only 27,000 PSPs sold last week? That poor thing is losing steam so damn fast, it will probably scare Microsoft away from the handheld market.

Ah, okay. I read wrong.

Well, the rumor is that Microsoft may try to get into it next fall.

That would be retarded though.

But actually, I believe the PSP is selling at a better rate than PS2 originally did in Japan, for the most part (or rather it did). I mean it looks crappy compared to DS sales, but PSP sales still aren't BAD.

What boggles my mind though is that the games DON'T SELL. Games sell badly on the PSP in Japan, so what the hell are they using it for?

I agree there just isn't enough games for Japanese tastes but Japans aversion to western goods is well known. For instance the US produces some of the highest grade beef in the world. We used to export but it sat on Japanese docks rotting away until Japanese specualtors started buying up cattle land and raising their own over here for export to Japan. They can't get enough. Also Google Japan trade imbalance and check out the tariffs they impose on all US goods but the few times we attempted the reverse they screamed bloody murder.

At its launch Japans largest department chain had gotten 3 Xboxes returned and just the rumor of Xbox 1's overheating and they refused to carry it any longer with the CEO angrily denouncing "inferior" western made products.

Don't even get me started about their "no roundeyes" signs in 99% of their non-tourist area bars and massage parlors.

Well personally, I just can't blame them for not buying the Xbox, for it sucked. :P

(Xbox 360 rocks though.)

I wouldn't be surprised if 360 sales see a rise in Japan in the coming months due to the announcement of the PS3 price.

I think the only thing that could really save 360 in Japan are some of the upcoming RPGs by Mistwalker, like Blue Dragon.

PS3 has FFXIII and its spinoff coming, so it's already got the FF audience in Japan (which is er, quite large).

as soon as ChromeHounds ships I'll be buying one as well.

I got mine the end of January and have played it more since then than I played the original Xbox in 4 1/2 years. Live Arcade is the shit.

While Final Fantasy would be a start, Microsoft would be better off trying to get Dragon Quest as it is more popular their than Final Fantasy. Since both games are controlled by Square Enix and they are basically in Sony's pocket, I don't see it happening

As for the consoles, The only way that Microsoft will be 2nd there is if Sony stops making the Playstation or Nintendo folds and that would a act of God (or the PS3 sells a total of 7 systems) for it to occur.

Square-Enix has been supporting more platforms lately, most notably (um sp?) the Wii and DS. They also have an online Final Fantasy for the 360. 13 on the 360 isn't too farfetched, especially if the PS3 sells like shit which is a very good possibility at this point.

Wow. 8 original Xboxes. Hahahahaha! Microsoft doesn't need japan, though. (It would be nice if they got it, though.) The 360 is going to crush the PS3 over here and it's going to force companies to develop for the 360 so I'm not too terribly worried about it.

Keep up the list though, I really enjoy reading these on joystiq, but it's nicer to hear what you baggers have to say about it rather than the various fanboy retards on that site.

Japanese developers will never support Xbox 360 if sales stay as they are in Japan, even if PS3 fails. Wii will be their system of choice before 360.

Holy mother FUCK @ the new Wackbag layout.

Jesus CHRIST.

Oh well, uh, let the new color coded numbers commence.

May 29 to June 4

New Super Mario Bros. continued its dominance over the software chart, breaking the 1 million mark in only its second week in release. Standing at 1.2 million, it will be interesting to see how far it can go.

The success of the DS helped Metroid Prime Hunters, a game that mixes the first person shooter genre with the Metroid series, two things that have never been very popular in Japan, make a solid 32k debut. Whether or not the game stays on the charts remains to be seen.
