It seems that my copied version of XP Pro will no longer allow updates. did MS recently change something with their system that no longer allows updates to versions on the pirate list? I used to be able to get sp1 and other updates, but not sp2. What happened?
Well anyway, I was going to get an oem version from newegg.com but had a few questions.
If I use media center edition, will I be missing something that is in home edition? In other words, is media center the same as home edition but with the special features of media center edition? I have an xbox360, so I may eventually want to network it with the media center edition. But I don't want to miss out on anything that is in the home edition that isn't in the media center.
And, if I buy an oem version, is it the same as the retail version, but with no packaging or manuals? Will it auto install like the retail version?
thanks

Let's just say that if you had a copied version, you should have updated it to the most current service packs and what not, then NEVER UPDATED AGAIN.
Just sayin'....

media center is xp pro with the addition of the media center software, so its better than home. It links nicely with the 360 so you can stream music, pictures and videos. if you install a TV card, you can use the media center as a tivo.
i have a media center network with my 360 in my living room and the original xbox in my bedroom, both acting like media center extenders (it controls your media center pc). i watch recorded shows that i have on my pc on either xbox (you need to get this for the original xbox: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?ref=froogle&pfp=froogle&product_code=50780853&cm_ven=froogle&cm_cat=&cm_pla=&cm_ite=feed).
after you set up your network, go to www.orb.com and download the software. it allows you to watch in real time live tv from anywhere on the net, i even use it on my windows mobile phone when im on the train! its some good shit!

I have heard somewhere that media center edition isn't great for gamers. Is this true?

I've had no trouble with gaming on MCE. Just make sure your video drivers are up to date.

Same here. I run MCE '03 and it works fine with games.
Chain Rink- If you have trouble or it runs to slow, check your processes and kill ehome.exe and ehsched.exe. These are the Media Center services that run in the background and tend to hog resources at times.

Chain Rink, yes, they announced it almost a year ago that they weren't going to be letting non-registered version update for free. No biggie anyhow as updates are usually posted on the bittorrent sites the following day.
I guess its not enough that you control 95% of the worlds fucking PC's, they just have to make sure that everyone gets charged for their software. I really do hope they lose much of their business to Google.

Media Center is not Pro with the Media Center software, it is Home with the Media Center software. The main difference is the Home cannot be joined to a Windows Domain. Other than that there are no major differences.
Media Center kicks ass. I have 4 of them, one on every TV in the house. In the living room on the big screen I have an HP Z555. http://www.nulime.com/Hewlett-Packard-HP-z555-Dig-Entertainment-Ctr-Desktop-Computers-Computers-p110735-c1454.html It is as badass as Media Centers get. Check it out, you wont be dissapointed.

True, but you don't have Group Policies or Domain Membership. It is home with a few of Pro's features, plus the MCE apps.
