hbo should have had a show like this in the 80's
I recall Showtime had a show like this in the 80's starring Bill Maher call 'Hard Knocks'. It was pretty funny, only six or so episodes aired. It was taped in front of a live audience and the standard three camera shoot. Showtime had a few sitcoms in the 80s.
I wonder if this was the same pilot taped a few months before it was picked up by HBO. If that's the case then maybe they used a laugh track. But I believe Jimmy if he says they don't use one. I'll check out the next episodes to see if that's true or not.
I never laughed that much at the first episode of Cheer, Seinfeld(aka the Seinfeld Chronicles), Friends, etc, just had some mild chuckles.. The first episode of the British version of the Office was histerical. But again the first episode of any sitcom is just something to get through and introduce the characters. There were some decent laughs on LL. I say it was definitely an above average pilot. Sometimes shows peak at the pilot episode, so I'll invest at least four or five more episodes before I decide if this is a decent sitcom or not.
wackbagette
06-11-2006, 11:08 PM
I'll be honest, I would have panned it if it weren't for our sweetie pie (BUFiness kicks in automatically). However, I think it'll get better once everyone settles into their characters and relaxes a little more in front of the audience. Tonight was a shakedown cruise...it'll find its rhythm in time and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
DeltaPin
06-11-2006, 11:08 PM

Why is everyone doubting it a live audience? Jimmy said it was live and the 'voice' at the beginning of the credits said it was taped in front of a live audience
I'm not saying it wasn't filmed before a live audience. Who the fuck laughs on cue like that?

Some things I liked about the show, others I didn't. When you look back at the successful sitcoms, the pilot episodes are always garbage, but I thought this had some good shit.
I thought CK and the woman who plays Kim were both funny. Other than Norton of course, I thought Jerry Minor (black guy) and Mike Hagerty (the fat friend) were great also. I'm glad we'll see more of Norton as the show goes on. I thought the woman who plays Kim's friend was pretty annoying though. It's original, clever, and has the potential to be incredibly funny. Glad Norton's a part of it. I'll be watching next week.

There's something to the fact that they're there as an audience that i think makes them laugh at the right spots. People are conditioned from the laugh track on every garbage sitcom on tv to know when to laugh.

I hate to say it but I don't see this show making it past 4 episodes...
This isn't network TV. HBO doesn't go by ratings. All twelve episodes will air whether you like it or not. The big question is will there be more episodes ordered.
I think this was a decent first episode and I watched the first episodes of lot of classic sitcoms before they became popular. And I'd say Lucky Louie is above average, first episode wise. But the question is now that Louie CK has used all of his act in the pilot how funny will the next episodes be.
I like the show, but even if I didn't I'd listen to Jimmy's advice and reserve judgement on the show until the next few episodes.

Think about some of the shows you love and then try to find the pilot or the first couple of episodes. Most of them are unrecognizable today. The best shows grow, if they are given the chance. I think this show can blow up, give it the chance.

I don't think O&A have anything to worry that Jimmy will be leaving their show to become big in Hollywood from the looks of Lucky Louie. This can't be compared to other sitcoms on Network television. It's like comparing XM to FM. You expect a better product because you're paying for it. And to say give it time. Fuck that. I don't have the time to give it time. Sopranos and Deadwood were instant hits. This show didn't come close. The acting's too forced and the jokes just aren't that great.

The funniest lines were the "the black one was half off" and the "your pussy is financial ruin." Other than that the show pretty much sucked and was unfunny. Whoever the chick is that plays the wife is an awful actress and should go back to waiting tables. I will give it a couple episodes and see if it gets better, especially since this was a pilot. Sopranos and Deadwood were instant hits. This show didn't come close. The acting's too forced and the jokes just aren't that great.
Deadwood wasnt an instant hit at all. It got smashed for half of the first season and only started to get big at all after Wild Bill got killed, like four or five episodes in. And did you really expect good acting from a bunch of first time actor comedians? The only guy in the show who's done any real acting is Mike Hagerty, and he was funny as hell in it.

my 2 cents and its only one mans stupid opinion. If I was not a loyal and long time Jimmy/O&A fan than I might not give this show a second chance. Isn't the premise of the pilot to put your best foot forward to get a project greenlighted? Thats not a rhetorical question, I'm asking if that is a fact. If it is than this show was not very good. If a pilot is just to get the ball rolling than the show may have potential. I just felt that hte acting was forced. The scene in the supermarket with laura slapping the roast was cringy and full on car crash. That horseshit was done in a clean version a million times. The interaction of jimmy/mike/and Louie was good and would like to see more of that...men sitting around discussing things.
I remember the wife from Facts of life ..I think she played Jo polnichecks cousin or little sister.
Again I'll give it time and hope it gets better, but as for the pilot ......I've seen smoother acting on Robot Chicken
Hopefully my mind will change after ep 2.
Also if Jimmy was not on it would you really watch the first ep and say Wow Brilliant stuff?

Jimmy did look creepy and his acting I am sure will get better.
However, overall, there were some funny lines but the acting was atrocious.
Looked to me like it was shot on mini dv video tape similar to spike lee's bamboozled.
If the acting does not improve over the next several weeks this show will crash and burn rather quickly.
My roommate thought it sucked terribly.

You people are unbelievable!!! It was a good first show!!!! I did think it was funny and will only get better, as James is in the show more. I can't believe some of you are already writing it off!
You are right. Lets give David Lee Roth a few more months, he really did not get a fair shot.

you dont have a second chance to make a first impression. the first impresssion was horrible! if this show was on the big 4 networks this would never get a second airing. the acting was forced. the set was cheesy. the kid was annoying. Jimmy is going to be the only reason i would watch the show.
Using that logic, cheers, seinfeld, three's company and a bunch of others would never have aired after the pilot episode.

There is not enough data to determine if it is a good or bad show yet. I thought the pilot was pretty good, but that still doesn't mean it's a good show.
Name your favorite sitcoms and we'll talk about what the pilot was and I bet it would be considered a weak episode.
I'm sure after twelve episodes we will be sick of the series because HBO will be reairing them over and over. Even if I wasn't an O and A fan I'd still watch LL and think it was an okay episode and look forward to more. Because it's the summer and there is nothing new on TV. I'm all for a new sitcom from a comedian I think is very funny. (Louie CK)

I was watching the new lewis black comedy special before Lucky Louie and laughed my ass off the entire hour. Thats all.
To Farthammer, acting is crucial to draw the audience in. If the first thing they notice is bad acting, really bad acting, forced lines, laughter at not funny moments, the audience will slip away rather fast. I will give this show a chance only cuz jimmy is on it. But I am just giving my opinion and congrats to Jimmy for his sitcom debut.

Humorous lines and good deliveries are what will draw audiences in to this type of show. If this was a drama acting would be more important.

Using that logic, cheers, seinfeld, three's company and a bunch of others would never have aired after the pilot episode.
Very true. Although I did think the first episode of Three's company was hilarious when it first aired. I was seven. But the end of the episode joke confused my brother and I. It was 'We told him your were gay.' And only my dad laughed. And I just didn't understand what was so funny about that. He had to use a bunch of synonyms for gay before I got the punchline. I think 'FAGGOT' was the one that let me get the joke.
Cheers was another show I watched when it first came out. The only reason I was into it was because Taxi moved to NBC and aired before Cheers. That was not a decent episode, and the whole first season was pretty weak and no one watched it. But I saw the potential and was glad it was renewed.
I also watch Seinfeld's first episode and the show was called "The Seinfeld Chronicles". Again it was weak but I was a fan of Senfeld and his appearance on ESPN's Roy Firestone's show that I continued to watch. I think there was huge hiatus between the first and second seasons.
I rarely watch sitcoms now, but you have to take the first episode with a grain of salt. It will take a few episodes to see if the show if funny or not. Again I thought the first episode was better than average for a pilot.
But I'll say something in favor for the people who hate LL and are cheering for Jimmy to fail. The reviewers show three episodes. But reviewers also hate O and A and are they right? Also the reviewers saw the first four episodes of the Sopranos and thougtht it was going to be the best season ever. You never can tell. HBO is going to wait 12 episodes to decide its fate, and I'll do the same.

Already sang my praises in the other LL thread, though I enjoyed it very much and look forward to the next. Would not have watched it, if not for Jimmy; though now that I have seen it, it works with him as much as because of him. The only real cringe for me was the supermarket scene. There was no saving her beating the meat. Truly one of those moments where I felt embarrassed, as if it was my fault in some way.
Surprised at how much of a throttling LL is taking here. Maybe the radio show being as strongly opinionated as it is makes some wonder how much of a spanking LL would receive without the Jimmy factor? Though it does have Jimmy, so good for us and especially good for Jimmy and LL.
Some of the criticism certainly seems objective, which is healthy and welcome to rational discussion, though some is questionable when an excellent thread with generous photos capturing Jimmy Day gets temporarily derailed by folks contemplating the state of Op's midsection.
I am sold on LL. Congrats to Jimmy and everyone else involved.

Throwing in my two cents like it matters....
I really enjoyed the show tonight on its own. Someone above asked if I would "waste" 30 minutes on this show without Jimmy, and of course I would. Love the concept, love the fact that it's so incredibly stripped down and raw. The shitty set, different film stock, and the language all work to give you a picture of what it's like away from an NBC or ABC sitcom. Cannot wait to see this thing improve and hit its stride, cause man is it going to be great.

No i'm not a dumbass, i'm an OA Fan, if i'm going to bitch about the show i'll go somewhere else. I wonder how many other "Fan Sites" bitch about whom they support?
This is one area where I totally disagree with O&A. This is a fan site, but it isn't a kiss-ass fan site. I think of it like I do the Mets.. I love the Mets. I'm a fan of the Mets. I read/watch all about them. But I will also critize them for making dumb player moves (dumping Kazmir), knowing they will hit into a double play, etc...
O&A do seem to think their fans should have the 'drink the Kool Aid' mentality. There have been some times where I disagree or even dislike things they do (e.g. treat Stalker Patti...sometimes). Does that mean I'm not a fan? Of course not. I've listened to every second of every XM show, many of the WNEW shows and even remember hearing Gonna Electric Shock OJ live.

First episodes of almost every show always stink...second episode usually does as well. First episode especially does, because 1/2 of the dialog is set up to explain the cast. Start judging after week 3. They have already set up for some really funny shit on this show - especially the always bad, awkward interaction between louis and the black family...that's gonna be priceless.
Relax folks...no one said this was going to be "All In The Family" or "Mash" midway through their runs from the start. You are all some seriously impatient fucks.

I disagree with all the people saying that the show was unwatchable. Sure it had some slow moments, but there were a few funny-as-hell moments that had me rolling. Maybe because my mind was a little altered at the time, but all in all I liked it.
I think that as the cast becomes more comfortable the show will mesh together much better. Once they 'loosen up' a little.
I'd liken it to the fact that the first half a seaon of a show like Seinfeld stunk too. None of the cast was comfortable so they didn't riff off each other well. Then as it went on the, show just began to flow together. Now I'm not trying to say that this show is going to be a Seinfeld hit, but just using the fact that even a wildly successful show like that pretty much sucked goats in its first few episodes.
As for Lucky Louie, it definitly made me laugh, and I'll be watching it again next week.

I'm going to try again tonight. I DVR'd it and watched it after I watched a great Deadwood. Maybe my mind wasn't sufficiently cleansed from Deadwood, because LL was pretty unwatchable for me. I laughed once, when Jimmy told the guy to meet him in the bathroom, because I thought he was meeting him for gay sex. When I realized it was because of a drug deal, it stopped being funny.
Overall, the acting and directing reminded me of that season of "Roc," with Charles S. Dutton, that they performed live. It was just uncomfortable to watch. That sentiment pretty much sums it up for me... Lucky Louis was uncomfortable to watch.
I'll try again tonight when I watch Tourgasm. I hope I get something else out of it.
