I second the DVDShrink recommendation. It rips the movie, strips the encryption, and recompresses it to fit on a 4.7gig blank in one process. For free. It also allows a great deal of control (if you want) over quality and content. If you're ripping a long movie, you can eliminate items such as alternate languages, extras, trailers, or choose to compress those items to a lower quality to allow the actual movie to look as close to the original as possible.
The only quirk is that you may need to play the movie on the computer (not long - 30 seconds will do) first before trying to rip it. I've had this happen only a couple of times. On my system couple of year old system, I can rip in less than 1/2 the playing time, though with some recent upgrades, that should be faster.

ok I give up after 8 hrs of trying. I copied "Grandma's Boy" using DVD Shrink and the burning software that came w/ my computer. I'm trying to copy "Eight Below" and I get an error. I tried a couple different programs. I tried using DVD decrypter then Shrink, then burn. didn't work. I'm so fucking frustrated.

Could be that Eight Below has an encryption that none of the current proggies can work around yet.

Some of the new Disney movies are attempting to use a new Macrovision encryption schema as well as the usual CSS encryption already in place....the downside is that it is incompatable with pretty much 99% of all DVD players made before 2001. It's not breakable (yet), but I've found there are very few encryption schemes that are not hackable.
I'll take a look tonite with my daughter's copy....

I would post this as a new topic, but can't start them yet....
I want to get a DVD burner, any particular barnds to get / stay away from. Any features I should look for?
Already have a DVD reader in my comp, so I'd like to rip copies directly, if this is an option.
Thanks.

They're all pretty much the same, so whatever you get will prolly do everything you want it to do. I have a sony DRU-720 and some pioneer one. Both nice. (Look for dual layer, that way when the DL blanks come down in price you can burn them.)
You can't directly rip dvd 2 dvd-r, unless the source dvd isn't copy protected. You have to decrypt first, usually while dumping the video-ts folder to a hard drive. As stated above, DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter both do a nice job.

I have the sony DRU 510 and 710 (710 is DL also) and love it, I've been using the 510 for close to 4 years and it still works great. The DL disks are still insanely expensive even on ebay.
On a side note - I usually burn movies onto DVD+R and don't have a problem, does anybody have a preference? I don't think I've even tried a DVD-R.

Any opinions on the Pioneer DVR-111? It's 16x DL, only $55.00 CDN in town.
Thanks.

Pioneer hasn't made a burner that has failed on me yet unless it is due to old age (the last Pioneer burner I had (2x CD-R) was over 6 years old when it finally bit it).

I use DVD-R because my panasonic DVD set top recorder doesn't do +R. I honestly don't know the difference.

Pioneer has always been good to me too. And at $55? How could you go wrong?

I posted this in the Lucky Louie thread so I apologize for being a redundant asshole..... I received a letter from my ISP today saying I've been in violation of illegally hosting copyrighted material. The details at the bottom of the letter identified bittorrent as the offending program, so just be careful!

DVD fab decrypter + DVD shrink will get rid of most copy protections (including Sony's) and make nice DVD copies. both are free.
