As for Uncle Junior biting the dust...I could see that, he's getting pretty senile and that cancer just keeps coming back. Chris might go...he's going to keep a lot of resentment over having to have had Adrianna whacked

The 2nd season, where Big Pussy gets it in the end. In my opinion, the show has not been better since. If I was to pick a favorite characther it would be Silvo. Wise, silent, but violent when its necessary.
One of my favorite episodes was Season 3 was "Pine Barrons"

I gotta say Steve Buscemi... it's a shame he didn't get to develop more before he got Dick Cheney'd.
Also Old School Furio.
My favorite episode in Season 4 I think the episode "Whoever Did This" the one where Ralph looses his head over Pie-O-My.

Ralphie.
Ralphie was definitely my favorite character, but my favorite overall season was Season 2. If for no other reason than the episode with Alicia Witt. I *love* her.
Bring on season 6!!! I just finished season 5. I really hated season 5 when it first aired but now it is one of my favorite seasons. Maybe it is from the lack of new Sopranos shows.

Paulie Walnuts and Silvio Dante.
Paulie because he killed the old woman (a friend of his mothers) and took her money so his tribute to Tony would be bigger that week.
Silvio because he killed Adriana LaCerva. "Come here you stinkin cunt."

Gotta agree with you, Furio was great I would have liked to see him fuck that French guy up though..it was great how Tony took over the debt and then turned his pit bull on the guy. The other great part of that episode was seeing Artie try and be a wiseguy and get fuck up in the process.

Your dead on, what a waste to just get ride of him in such a lame way. I would have liked to see Bobby Bacala kill Adriana rather than Silvio. We have only see a few short glances at the dark side of Bacala (in the bar intimidating the union rep & cracking heads once with a crow bar in a construction site) it would have built his character a lot to have him rather than Silvio do that hit. Meh what could have been.

I'm waiting for Patsy Parisi to get more involved. I think it was on Sopranoland or something like that, but the director was talking about him, saying that when he gets angry, he makes Furio look like a girl scout.
Eh, whatever. I don't think Furio would have been very good with the whole New York fued. That's where they would have fucked up Furio, had they not already fucked his story up. He would've been in Tony B's shoes instead, or, he would've killed Tony B waaaay before Tony S did.

The Boston Herald gave it a shitty review today in the paper
Everybody has a right to an opinion. I am sure there are some reviewers who are saying its going to be the best season out of the series. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
That being said the one major issue the reviewer had had with the first episode is that you are re-introduced to a lot of characters and story lines, too much in fact. This is probably a fair critique but you have to remember that this is not a typical half-hour show that takes normal breaks. The Sopranos has been off the air for a while and so they need to "compact" a lot in the first episode in order to re-acquaint the fans with past story lines.
Anyway, Bostonians talk funny and therefor can not be trusted to form solid, sensible thoughts.

Well what do you expect, when HBO spends the first 5 minutes jacking itself about the Soprano's NYC premiere.

They wanted to keep you guessing about Tony.
If they show a preview for next week, the whole shock factor would be lost.
Great surprise ending. Funny since Melfi complains to Tony that he is caring for a man that conspired to kill him... only to have Junior shoot him while he is trying to help him

Bobby Baccalla has got to go. He is the gayest Gangster i have ever seen. Between Pushing the baby stroller and playing with his Trains in the garage dressed like "CHOO CHOO CHARLIE". Come to think of it, when did you ever see Bobby do any Mafia stuff. I don't think i have ever seen him tune some one up or even threaten anyone. Please make Baccalla sleep with the fishes

Bobby has not done much Gangster shit, but they did give him one scene right after his wife died when he went and gave some veiled threats about a union vote to some guy in a bar. Pretty good scene....
and bobby is the one guy I have never wished to be killed at some point or another... probably because he gives off that "hey- even you can be a gangster!" vibe.

Having typed that, the ONLY thing that saved it was the last 10 minutes or so....
Ok I think Tony lives but Christopher has to run things while Tony recovers. I think he;ll have problems with the NJ guy who works for Johnny.
I think Vito is going to get in a relationship he has to hide and the gang will think he is a rat. He'll either come out to them before they kill him for they'll find out after.
I loved whatever Uncle Jun screamed before he shot Tony and how he hid in the closet. he promises to be very funny this season. Also I loved the shot of AJ in class. Very funny

I constantly still wonder if Uncle Junior is fucking nuts...or is he doing this on purpose??? Either way...last 10 mins did save the episode...it started off very dry for a Sopranos episode...just gotta wait to see next sunday.
Oh the other thing I think is going to happen is Janice is going to laugh her ass off when she hears that Jun shot Tony. I think Bobby will laugh too and Tony will hear about it and think it is disrespectful.

They played up tonys weight int his episode and he got shot in the gut, so i think hes gonna pull through cause the bullet got lodged in his fat. Junior though has to go, if hes really as out of it as we all think. he knows to much and is to far gone to go into a home, he could let something slip. But hes also being watched by the feds because of his trial, if he winds up dead after Tony is shot in his house (which the police will know happened) the feds will come right for tony.
Also now that the feds are out of informants they will need to find someone new, my guess would be AJ. He's gonan fuck up and they are gonan try and get information out of him.
I also think someone in the familyt is going to take advantage of T being out of it for a while and make a powerplay. My guess would be Vito or Paulie, Silvio is to smart to get involved and Christopher is to dumb to try anything. Tony is going to see this and start grooming AJ.

I actually said it out loud when Uncle Jun yelled down the stairs, "Who's there?" and Tony said, "Malanga" or whatever, I said, "Oh shit, he is gonna shoot him" He was talking as if he wanted to kill that guy all episode.
When Tony said that jokingly, I knew something bad was coming. I knew he was going to try to shoot him, it was really cool that he actually did it.

I can say without reservation that this was the best "Sopranos" episode I've seen in more than a year. You see, because the show's been off the air and...
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/drakedrake/cricket.jpg
...I'm just sayin'
Seriously, I thought this was a very good beginning. I know it's fashionable to downplay how good this show is, and I've heard plenty of that today from various people. Clearly this series will always disappoint the A.D.D. crowd (I'll bet Opie really switched over to Lisa Loeb's reality show-- intentionally). But Ant & Norton were dead on about the Dr. Melphi scenes for the past several seasons-- a tired premise that has overstayed its welcome. Tony might as well be talking to a paneled wall-- Loraine Brocco has the acting presence of wood.
Ok I think Tony lives but Christopher has to run things while Tony recovers. I think he;ll have problems with the NJ guy who works for Johnny.
Well didn’t Vito say if anything ever happened to Tony, he was next in line to be the boss? Which then would have allowed Gene to leave and go to Florida; I would like to know how they taped that hanging it looked so fucking real, I’m guessing they had a bungee on him.

I'm sure Vito thinks that because he is the 'self-proclaimed' top earner, but I'm sure the other Capo's would have something to say about that.
Vito might have let Gene leave, but it didn't seem that the FBI was too happy with the move either.

I fucking forgot how much Tony's heavy breathing annoyed/skeeved me until Sunday...jesus christ the guy needs a puff of an inhaler just to eat a meal. that has to be the worst rumor ever. that would mean that there wouldn't be a war between nj and ny and come on we all know there will be. also, we'd know how tony dies which is just dumb. my 4 year old nephew could come up with better rumors than that...
Tony got shot in the stomach, right? That wouldn't kill him for quite a while, unless he had something like as a result of the attack. He was able to reach the phone, and dial 911, so most likely, they send the cops and find him on the floor.

I can see them doing flashbacks, sort of, as Tony is laid up. Him thinking about shit he's done, bad decisions he's made. Though action will go forward with different people manuvering to gain an advantage.
Tonight's episode sounds interesting, I wonder who is getting whacked tonight? Will the FBI look for a new person to flip tonight?

You did see some of the little "power" moves:
Paulie saying he's gonna send a stereo to the hospital, Chris telling him Tony doesn't need it right now, then Chris sending a stereo first.
Vito bitching about everything, putting blame on Baccala.
Was funny hearing Vito say someone else could possibly be a homo.
One of those transitional episodes, Tony's in a coma, both 'famiilies' distraught & confused. The whole empire is going to start to crumble.

My mother is a nurse and when I called her before thats the first thing she said to me when I asked if she watched that horseshit.
That was just an atrocity. One of my friends is sitting here saying that if you didnt like it, your a moron and you dont know how to think about TV. I tried explaining to him how many times these episodes happen where you say "it will make sense eventually" yet at seasons end they still explain nothing. Tony will wake up and we will never find out what that 'dream' was.
That episode took 2 years to write.
I saw someone wrote "at least the preview for next week looks good". Season 4, every single preview looked great and then by the time the episode aired, it was just terrible.

03-19-2006, 11:59 PM
I liked the episode. It was interesting to see how Tony envisioned his life if he was not in the Mafia, with elements of "you are who you are" inserted into his vision. I also liked the "Godfather" angle concerning A.J. being dragged into the "family" by his fathers shooting. If AJ does do something stupid (highly probable) it will cripple Tony and lead to his ultimate downfall.
Anyway, the episode was a needed set-up for a power struggle within the family and a possible battle with New York. Besides, the show doesn't always have to be bullets flying all over the place and action-packed to be good. Remember, this isn't just a series about the Mafia, it's about the struggle to walk the line between a family life and the Mob.

I fucking hate the dream episodes. The metaphors alone were enough to make want to throw my tv down the stairs. Sure it set up a power struggle within the captains, sets up AJ trying to cap Junior, and it basically set up Tony being totally fucked up for this whole season which will really leave a sour taste in my mouth. Tony is this show, and if they leave him a vegtable for the rest of the season/series to "signify" some meaning they can get aids and die. Bullshit episode and this season is shaping up to be a piece of shit. I love the show, but this is bullshit to ruin the last season with this story line.

The Russian is not coming back. The point of that episode was to show Paulie falling out of favor with Tony.
Melfi's **** story didn't go anywhere because the whole point of that was to have Melfi make the choice of whether to use Tony to get revenge.

I also believe dream sequences are done to death, but the negative reactions to this episode come from a desire for the same, old mob shit that's also been done to death.
Pretty odd that the bbbboys want the same tired plots when they rip others for watching all the same crap. I like irony.
Um no, the negative reactions come from the fact that we waited 2 years for new episodes and we get last weeks (which without the last 10 mins, i thought was subpar) and then this crap.
Im not asking for the same old mob crap (even tho its a show about the mob) but I also dont wanna see AJ complaining about a hybred car. Maybe if the dream thing goes somewhere in the future and they reveal what the hell it meant to tony that would be fine but this show has far too much of a track record of throwing shit like that in there and then giving it little or no explanation.
The russian thing had far bigger implications just because the guy got away and they never found him. They led you to believe that something was going to come of it and then nothing. not a single word. There are far better ways to show paulies falling out with tony than to have an entire episode of chris and him in the woods eating ketchup packets.
As for people who say " you dont get it because you dont think enough about it." or that you "dont put enough thought into the symbols", fuck you. This is a TV show. We shouldnt have to sit there and analyze ever little thing just to get some hint as to why this is happening. If I wanted to think deeply about something, ill go back to school and get my masters.

To me its looking like a kinda full circle kind of thing. I mean the series started off with Jackie on his way out and Tony becoming boss (via Junior of course) and it could be the same thing, hope not cause a season without the Tony character wouldn't be as much fun but we'll see.
And to the people who bitch constantly about how much this sucks that sucks, this season's horrible...we waited 2 years for this...etc.etc.etc....you have a remote if you don't like it turn it the fuck off and stop your bitching switch the channel put on desperate housewives or some shit, flush your remote and go fuck your mother :deadhorse

What bigger implications did the Russian have? A Russo-Dego mob war? When has the show been about that? It's not the Godfather.
Paulie ended up in the back seat of Tony's car looking like a tired old fuck with mayo on his face. You could see Tony's total disdain for him at that point. It was one of the best episodes they had.
I hate when shit is all spelled out. I know it's a TV show, but that doesn't mean it has to satisfy the lowest common denominator of cheap soap opera plots. In all honesty, plots suck. Characters and their conflicts create drama.
People complain that there is nothing but crap on TV, but when something comes along that isn't immediately satisfying on the most base levels, people shit all over that as well.
David Chase probably knows this, which is why this season started with HL Mencken's quote about the taste of the American public. There's way too much ego coming from viewers in that they are not willing to be led by a storyteller. Ultimately, you might not like how it goes, but at least appreciate that the producers, writers, and directors have their story to tell, not yours.
The first two episodes were basically the same as the rest of the series. A lot of characterization and only hints of larger plots and implications. Don't expect that to change. If people don't like it, they shouldn't continue watching, unless you are like Opie and watch stuff to get mad.

I thought the episode was really good. Watching AJ with Tony scared the hell out of me, as well as when Tony's sister freaked out when she saw them changing his bandages. Tony reminds me of my father like 6000%, just without the mob part, so seeing Tony so helpless was a bit frightening to me.
I think we are spoiled by the first season and now it is just consistently disappointing. If something amazing doesn't happen within the next two weeks I think I'm going to let it go.

Didn't someone call into the show last Monday and say they read a transcript of synopsis of the 2nd and 3rd episodes? I thought the caller said the 2nd episode was a "stand-alone" ep not related to Tony's shooting or condition?!?!
WTF, did the guy just read the first paragraph and see Tony AKA Kevin in Hotel room.......
The show is waaaaaaaaaayy past its prime. Just kill Tony already and end the saga that could have been a good series.

If nothing "amazing" happens over the next 2 weeks, you will still be here 3-4 weeks from now. Many people here complain about how the show now sucks, but they don't seem to be changing the channel.

Tony's not coming back...or if he does, it'll be as a vegetable/retard
Impossible because I know that Swiss Miss filmed a scene with Tony that has yet to air.
I've never lost interest in the show. It's not only about action and mob story lines. The relationship, character development and power struggles are always the main focus and the mob aspect just helps expose human nature at its most base form.
Last night's symbolism was too heavy handed for my taste but Eddie Falco's acting was gut wrenching and Janice's false display of emotion was also equally nauseating.
BTW- my sister met AJ on Friday in the city and has confirmed for me that he is a complete homosexual. Her gaydar is 100% accurate.

I enjoy the way they do the "Dream" sequence on The Sopranos. I also liked seeing Tony as a business man. He was acting like James Gandolofini.
The episode reminded me of "Jacobs Ladder" with all the signs. Like, the lighthouse, being what I take as Heaven. Or, it could be his way back home. As it seemed the helicopter light was his way back to reality. He is in purgatory at the moment. I am interested in seeing next weeks episode.
I may be too easy to please, but I was really entertained by this episode. It left me wanting to know what's going to happen next.

If it were a movie...yes, it's drawn out. But we're talking about a one hour television show.
Obviously, the dream sequences are leading us to something big. We're not talking about a small character dying either, we're talkign about Tony. The main character is stuck in a coma and dying of a gut shot. It's huge, and we need to see how the other guys are giong to act as Tony is on his death bed, including AJ...

It was very heavily into symbolism (gee, ya think?) so that'll turn a lot of people from it...but just from the way it's going to set up the rest of the season, the tensions are so going to boil over within the family as well as with New York...Ant if you just wanna see guineas whackin' guineas, watch the next two episodes.

I am so glad you guys didn't like the episode. The show is ultimately about Tony and his two families. Everyone seems to bitch at these episodes because they are smart episodes that focus on his relationship with his actual family.
I suggest if all you want is non stop action, you should watch the shield. Not much depth but action packed. Please stop bitching because you don't like the main theme of the show.
With that said, I usually watch the episodes 2 or 3 times the week they come out. I won't watch this one again, but I still think it was great and vitally important when you think of Tony. From the begining he's been a tragic hero, so he has to die or go to prison, in order to fulfill the arch. He has to lose both families one way or the other.

I thought Tony's dream of being a businessman that was lost and trying to find his way home was a metaphor for Tony's conscience trying to find his way out of the coma. The show ended with him being called out of the coma by Carmella, and him picking up a phone to call home, but then putting the phone down again.
I agree, I'm not a big fan of the dream sequence stuff, but putting Tony in a coma is a big twist. It will be a real challenge for the writers and cast to pull this off. I hope that Tony isn't in a coma for the rest of the season. That would blow.
It does look as though a power struggle within the NJ family is about to take place. Do you think AJ will take out Uncle Jun, or get sucked into the family business since he has flunked out of school?

I loved the episode, personally. If every episode -- hell, even if every third episode was like this, it would drive me nuts. But you need an episode like this to balance things out. The show was a great episode. I liked getting a glimpse of "straight" Tony - Anthony Soprano, salesman, with his non-tough guy accent.

I liked when Vito farted
Farts are funny. That was the redeeming moment for me. I love the fact that Chase and Co. are not forgetting that this is just a television show. I didn't like this weeks ep. but it did something that another shoot-em-up episode could not have done....got people talking. If this was intended to be the wake up call for true fans, then they have succeeded. I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next move. I have invested a lot of time in this series and I am not going to tune out for quite a while, so they have me in the palm of their hands.
The Sopranos has more loose ends than a plate of spagheti, but there's always a chance that the writers will be able to revive a plot from seasons past to give a major payoff to loyal fans. I remember buying the first seasons box set of DVDs and watching all of the episodes from start to finish. That was over six years ago and I still remember the feeling of regret for not watching the early episodes when they first aired. We may point back to this episode and say it was the "jump the shark" moment, but I don't care because I get to watch my tragic hero drive through the Jersey toll plazas once again. Welcome back, family.

I also enjoyed it. I felt after the premier this season that Tony dies from Junior's gunshot. This is the best way to watch the others fuck each other in the ass to take control of the family. All the references in the premier about Tony might not always be the head of the family was a setup to this. I'll watch it through to the end. Watching Tony not knowing who the fuck he is and not being able to find a way home while he is in a coma is an interesting angle.
And it's always a pleasure seeing everyone weigh in on where a thread should be. Guess the board doesn't need mods anymore.

I look at each season like a masterpiece in progress. Until it's finished we won't know how good it really is. Each episode is a weekly build to what should be something bigger and better. I know O&A complained about the "genius" of David Chase but look at this way. He draws into each week's episode to see what's going to happen. The episode on its own my seem to suck but when the pieces of the puzzle are fully assembled, we'll be able to fully appreciate this season. At least I hope so!

I know O&A complained about the "genius" of David Chase but look at this way. He draws into each week's episode to see what's going to happen. The episode on its own my seem to suck but when the pieces of the puzzle are fully assembled, we'll be able to fully appreciate this season. At least I hope so!
at least it looks like next week we will be seein some killin

I don't care I love the show, unless they make it a musical like Cop Rock.

I thought it was a solid episode... i have to watch it again... too much going on... i like that they actually are dealing with the peoples lives and it is not jsut whacking everyone... that is fun too, but you gotta have some sort of story going on

I have to agree with you, if it's not Tony, then good night Uncle Jun...

I agree that Uncle Junior is a dead man. Is there any chance that AJ is actually going to make good on his promise to "put a bullet" in his "mummy head"?
I also agree with the boys, enough with the dreams Mr. Chase. Start wacking people. Janice would be a great place to start, then AJ. Hey, kill them both in a car accident, I don't care. I just want more characters killed.

Rebroadcast is on now for this week's episode.
I am noticing, Tony is much calmer in dealing with the whole luggage mixup than I'd expect him to be. I wonder what the significance is...

I think the Sopranos could easily stay centered on mob activity, and the drama surrounding it, without getting old and tired.
Take The Wire, for example; same concept every episode - cops chasing drug dealers, drug dealers killing eachother, cops working with drug dealers, the politics of crime. Yet the show is fucking great, better than the Sopranos in my opinion.
The Sopranos has been feminized and turned into something other than what made it so popular.
 Right on the money sir.. Seems Mr.Chase has lost the formula that made the show popular and used that popularity to turn it into a symbolistic (that a word?...prob not) piece of crap. AND making people wait 2 years+ for it.....bravo sierra sir. You want to throw an episode like this in? Fine. But next week when another option pops up I no longer feel that I may be missing some great lines and some "water-cooler" conversation. I KNOW story lines arent gonna be wrapped up.....The suspense is gone. Yeah I'll still watch out of curiosity..but it aint the same.
Reminds me of the BS kings english they started spitting out in Deadwood. If not for the occasional "Kunt" that show would be out as well. And its a great show
And the WIRE kicks... always has.

Got a pre-release copy of tonight's episode. Strap in kids:
AJ has a long dream about joining the peace corps but he is conflicted about whether to go to Africa to help aids patients or Indonesia to help Tsunami victims build new huts.
Carmella decides to start selling Avon products but it causes tension with Jennie (Sac's wife) because she sells them too. They work it out by hosting a tupperware party together.
Meadow and Fin start planning their wedding but they have an argument over which kind of rolls to use for the reception - wheat or rye.
Melfi has a breakthrough with her psychologist.
