What do you think was Death's best lineup?

Human- Digiorgio, Reinert, Masvidal
Individual Thought Patterns- Andy LaRocque, Hoglan, Digiorgio
Symbolic- Koelble, Conlon, Hoglan
The Sound of Perseverence- Christy, Hamm, Clendenin

It's very tough because all lineups had their superstars and pushed the envelope of technical metal using the respective talents of the players.

Human had Sean and Pete, who went on to the great Cynic, but then he was replaced by the amazing Gene Hoglan. Those two are hard to pick the better drummer from. Then Christy was as good as the two previous, just different again.

I am going to have to go with Individual Thought Patterns. For the fact that LaRocque was on it. This was totally different than what he had ever done, and he did it very well.

Individual Thought Patterns - For Hoglan, Digiorgio, LaRocque (Its Perfect)

I will put that one second. That whole album just kinda grooved along. I think Gene had a lot to do with that. He did some great shit on that album.

How would you guys rank the technical era Death albums?

1. Human
2. Sound of Perseverence
3. Symbolic
4. Individual Thought Patterns

As far as lineups go, 1 and 2 hold for me.

Sounds of Perseverence is the absolute worst Death album out. Nothing memorable. I really tried, I listened to it a few times and haven't listened to it again.

Just bad. What the fuck was up with Chuck's voice?

That was towards the end, and Chuck's voice really couldn't handle much more. He was also growing tired of the growling vocals. When we met him in Columbus, he was telling us about it. Said he still loved it, but his voice was getting shot.

I disagree with TSOP. I think it is a perfect ending to where Chuck was wanting to take his music with Death.

My favs would go

Symbolic
Human
Individual
TSOP

However, I really love all of the Albums. Even Scream Bloody Gore, and Leprosy.

Spiritual healing is where you can really hear Chuck starting to explore.

TSOP is the test album I use when I try out new sound equipment. In part due to RC's drumming. I wasn't a fan of the vocals, but the music was so beyond what Death did in the past and even pushed Chuck's own boundaries that I didn't care.

It is an absolutely brilliant album and is amazing to see Chuck didn't run out of ideas at the end of Death's life. He only pushed his ideas further and further when he wasn't bound by the Death constraints anymore.

I only have Symbolic and it is a great album. Will be digging deeper into the Death back catalogue.

Listening to Iced Earth "Glorious Burden" right now. Never realized how great this one was either.

Missed the boat on the techincal metal world, I guess.

Just curious if TSOP is looked down upon because of Richard Christy? Even if you hate Stern, you have to admit Christy is a very talented drummer.

Not at all. I personally think Richard is wasting his talent. He wants to do comedy, and is happy over there, so more power to him. I just with he would still play in a band or 2. I loved his band Burning Inside as well.

As a brand new Death(thanks Ex) listener, I've only heard Sound of Perseverance. I liked it. Very intricate. And Christy's drumming was spectacular.
I have a lot more listening to do before I can have a real opinion on this.

Sorry if I'm skewing the vote here. I haven't heard all of the albums, I just picked based on the musicians listed...so Individual Thought Patterns wins for me based on the fact that I love their other works. I really need to listen to more Death.

I think Chuck finding RC and exploiting his talents at the end of his career and life is amazing. I also think metal lost with RC leaving music. He was certainly a brilliant, albeit goofy character.

Christy should be in a band! I will admit he is a fucking hilarious sick maniac on the stern show though.
