My sister is traveling to Hobart, Tasmania this spring and I'm not allowed to go because it's her country to visit. However, if I were to travel to Europe, then she can come beacue Autistics are real fucking easy to take advantage of.

Anyways, I'm graduating from SUNY Plattsburgh this May with a Bachelors in Communication, while my family is down under visiting my sister. The day after I graduate, should I go look for a job or travel someplace exotic? If so, where?

I spent three weeks in Hobart, Tasmania back when I was in the Navy, and my little brother drank himself out of SUNY Plattsburgh.

A bachelors in communication from SUNY Plattsburgh.. So what does that qualify you to do? Talk?

Wow, that is a small world.

Yea. Pretty much. I'm an Audio/Radio major though. So my Advisor (I also TA for him in our WARP class) is really persistant on his students working in production. See, that' what most kids who are in my class are planning to do. They either have jobs lined up already or they have their resume's all typed up. I need to add TA still to my resmue so I'm not even close to deciding what I am going to do. Will I travel and if so where?

Your family isn't going to be there when you graduate? Did I read that right? If so, that sucks.

You should probably secure a job before you graduate, but give yourself a few weeks off between school and work if you can afford it. I'd say definitely take a trip somewhere exciting for this milestone, you deserve it after all that school. Go somewhere you've never been before or do something you have always wanted to do... It's not senior week. Plus, when else might you be able to take all this time off work, if you want to see a few countries, go back packing, etc. We're going to Ireland in two weeks for me being (almost) done school, but we can only go for a week b/c my husband can't take more than that off from work.

So far, I've only been to Scotland & England, but I'd have to say try to spend some time in them and Ireland. Edinburgh is really neat, we regret never making it to the countryside. London was boring comparatively, but we travelled up to Oxford which was cool. The pubs in London were cool. It's just like NYC with old buildings and royalty. We're renting a car and driving around Ireland with a basic itinerary of what we'd like to do, but will try to go with the flow over there.

Just start saving now, it's not cheap.... Everything really adds up, especially the airfare. Have fun!

Thanks Grace. Yea, my folks aren't coming, but my Mom's family from Amsterdam, NY is coming up. So that'll be okay.

That really is the best advice that I've gotten all night. Seriously. I think that really answers my question as far as what I should do after I graduate. As far as where to travel to, that is still up in the air. I've only been to Canada and Mexico. While they're both sick places to go, I would love to go visit my family ancestory in Scotland (Never been; suprised myself). I'd love to go visit my Great-Grandfather and Grandfather's hometown up there.

I've also always had a love of music from the U.K. (When it was on, I used to listen to listen to Rock Over London w/ Paul Sexton) but yea it would be cool to get a different taste of England as well. I dunno about Ireland though. If I have time. Hell I'll take a ferryboat to Africa if there is one. Europe and parts of Africa. Then off to the City to try and jumpstart my career.

Thanks again Grace and congratulations on finishing school and have fun in Ireland!

See, I only lived there for a very short time, but my mother was born and raised in Amsterdam. My Grandmother recently passed after 83 years of living, so we were all out there for her funeral. We lived on Guy Park for a while, until we moved to Massachusetts. When we came back to Amsterdam about five years later, we were so fucking shocked as to the transofrmation into Amsterico. We still have family and friends in Perth and in Florida and so forth.

Wait, are you autistic?

Yeah, I have a form of Autism called Aspergers Syndrome. It's high functioning Autism pretty much. Needless to say, I was sheltered as a kid. No MTV after 1993. No VH1 after 1995. No E! Kiss FM was the only thing that I was allowed to listen to on the vanride into school b/c that's what my Mother told the vandriver. When I turned twelve however, my Dad got me a little Sony Walkman. Much to the shagrin of my Mother. I heard all about WAAF and how that was the station not to listen too b/c it was "Heavy Metal." So I listened. I found O&A. The show became a way of life for me to this day. When my Mom finally allowed MTV and VH1 back on the tube, I was too busy taping the boys on my new Stereo (I had it pretty good as well as a kid, don't get me wrong at all) to even care about anything else. The show is still a way of life for me even to this day!

Well, I hope you're not fucking with me. My girlfriend's sister is severely autistic. She doesn't talk much at all. It's caused a certain strange family dynamic.

Not kidding. Would you like to read my fucking I.E.P. reports? Or how many times I was sent to the "plannng room" for being a bad retard? As frustrating as it is coping with my limitations, I do have a lot of support behind me. Do I have problems with people b/c of my Aspergers? You bet.

Take the O&A XM walkover in Boston not too recently. I'm a college radio deejay at my school and you should've heard me with the boys. So yeah, I'm not kidding. Had to ride on a van with a down syndrome kid who would throw his bert and ernie dolls at us in the van while his mother, a van driver and SPED Liasson just stood there and yelled at us. Fun watching the regular kids in the regular class go out and have fun while you're stuck in a small special classroom with teachers who are just miserable and real pricks to the SPED kids. I could go on and on about this but I'll just let you all figure it out for yourselves. Sclone, I feel for your girlfriend's sister. Believe me. It's not fun!

Back story... Amsterdam, NY is a depressed, crumbling little mill town in way-the-fuck-upstate New York. It's right off the NYS Thruway and it's a convenient sort of halfway point on the drug transportation route between NYC and Buffalo. It was an easy town to score welfare in, and therefore became a major flocking point for Puerto Ricans... hence "Amsterico". Coleco had a big factory there which employed the small majority of Ricans who bothered to get jobs.

With that...here's one from the old neighborhood:

(Sung to the tune of La Cucaracha.)

My name is Chico, I work at Coleco.

I earn five dollars-a-day.

I go to Lucy, she give me poosey.

Take my five dollars away.

Thank you! Thank you very much.

I'll be here all week!

Knitter boy summed it all up right there. After 1945 and up until the late 1980s, Amsterdam was a pretty nice place for a family to live in. My family owned both Ritter Chemicals (right on the Amserdam/Fonda Town Line) and Mohawk Carpet and Rentals. My Great Grandmother lived in a mansion in the Guy Park section of town. We did to for a brief time and then my father's real estate develoments took us back to Massachusetts. We were out there not too long ago for my Grandmother's funeral, and we were coming hack from Raindancer's in Perth and I was the Designated Driver, escorting my folks back to where we were staying. I do not know how this happened, but my Mother directed me down the wrong street and somehow, we ended up in the slums. I said, "How do we get out of here?" She said " I don't know. But my only advice is...Lock your doors." We did get back to the motel safely.
