I am hoping I am not the only one here who likes collecting good wine. I have been going nuts at some auctions to add to the collection.
I know there are some of you out there who know good wine, so please share what's in your collection....
And not to mention, when you have the perfect match of your favorite food to your favorite wine, all is well.
Tonight...Terriacki Chicken with Firestone Riesling. Good.
No homo, beer is good too, but with hot dogs and burgers.

My gf and I are starting to a bit here and there. We aren't after the $2000 bottle of wine though, we enjoy going to little wineries (sp) wherever we travel and bringing back some. I still prefer beer but wine is a nice "fancy man" change every once in a while

hmm, i've heard of people who have wine cellars, but not too many people who collect wine. but then again, people collect all kinds of crazy shit, so wine is probably not the worst thing to collect.
besides, i don't criticize people who like wine. Maynard James Keenan of Tool is a wine connaisseur and has his own wine cellar, and he's the last person you'd suspect to have an interest in wine. so i'd have to say that being interested in wine gets a NO HOMO in my book.

I don't buy into the whole $75+ bottles of wine with fancyman french names and shit to sound special. I like a variety of wines from around the USA and I dont buy shit because some fag on the wall street journal radio commerical says it's good.
I like to try things out and I don't think there is anything wrong with American wines unlike a lot of wine snobs who almost exclusively buy European wine. I have a few things around like Reislings but I mostly drink pinot noir because it's not as watered down tasting as the cabernet sauvignons that I've had and its not as dry the merlots have been for me. I think Merlots also have an odd aftertaste, blah.
You wouldn't catch me at an auction for wines though because I would care less about buying up stocks of old shit to show off to company that comes over. If thats what you're into then cool, but it's just not my style.
Since I'm in college there aren't too many of my friends who even enjoy wine because they are still stuck in the "tastes like shit but I buy it anyway" domestic beer phase. FUCK! I hate cheap beer. It has no flavor and it almost seems to leave a waxy aftertaste if you dont cover it up with food. Maybe it's just me... I drink imports because they are worth the extra couple of dollars.

My brother started this last year after he got married. Wine doesn't really do anything for me. I got married a few months back and don't feel any magical forces compelling me to become a wine aficionado. We have some wine here that my wife and her parents have had. We also have gotten a few bottles as gifts, and have some leftover from our wedding. But I really haven't had the urge to taste it.

I'm not a collector or connoisseur but we do stop at some smaller
wineries when we travel. Some of the best wines are very inexpensive
and come from the smaller places. I loved this on from the Williamsburg

Probably the best bottle we have is a 1997 Spring Mountain Reserve CAbernet Sauvignon. We have a 2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon as well, and I think a couple other 2001 Cabs. 1997 and 2001 were excellent years for California Cabs.
We've also got a little more than half a case of a 1995 Warres single quinta Port that we got for our wedding. We got a case, and have been drinking one a year, although after this year (our 5th) we are slowing down so we can extend it some. We've got some Late Bottle vintage ports as well, and some other vintage ports from Osborne and Dow - dont know how good those are, because they really aren't ready to drink yet. We also have some decent Syrahs. Honestly, though, for every day drinking wine we buy Barefoot Merlot.

I saw that at the super market the other day and I was going to pick up a bottle. Did you like it?
I have in the last couple of years really learned to appreciate a good wine. I am not a snob I couldn't tell you anything about what makes a good wine. Although I tried a wine at the Bellagio I thought was damn good called Mt. Eden red wine I think it was like a 02 or 01. Fifty dollars a bottle but damn well worth it. Ususally if I drink wine I prefer red.

It is good. It's a bourdeaux style cabernet. It will age well for years.
I recently consumed a bottle with some grilled strip steak. This is a stong, hearty wine that pairs well with rich red meat or lamb dishes.
I also suggest the Coppola Syrah, it has a green label. It's a little lighter than the claret, but still good.

I was out in Ithaca not too long ago for Grassrootsfest, and driving down, my friend and I were hoping to pass by the Hazlit Winery. Sure enough, we did just that. We stopped in for some of their famous "Red Cat" after-dinner wine. While I'm no habitual wine drinker, I must say that the Red Cat is one of my new favorite Red Wines in the world. Better than anything that I tried out in Sonoma County with my family.
It's now a Sunday Night ritual, Just before Ten, I get a glass and pour me some Red Cat and I'm good to go. If you're ever in the Finger Lakes area, or going to visit Ithaca, I highly suggest stopping into Hazlit. It's out of this world!

I enjoy a little wine now and then. If folks have recommendations for a casual wine that would go well with grilled steak or chicken, that would be great (price range about $10-20). My wife likes white zinfandel so that would be a starting point there. I find that I usually like a red that's a little oaky, on the strong side. I don't know if I'm describing it that well...Something that would go okay after dinner with a small cigar would be helpful, too.

They are affordable (all under $15) and you can get them at Target or any supermarket with a large wine selection.
Any of the reds would go with the steak.
The vioginer would go great with chicken, if the wife likes white zin, that would be a nice transition.

Anyone in NYC, I recommend you check out Moore Brothers Wine Company on E. 20th and B'way. They have a really good selection of very small producers from Europe. And the whole store is refrigerated (the ideal temp. for wine is 56 degrees - cellar temperature). Also, anyone can go to www.wineaccess.com and look for stores in their area. Using the site, you can search inventories and read customer reviews. You can also search by region, varietal, etc.
A few cheap supermarket recommendations:
Ravenswood Red Zin - they have three versions, I think - Sonoma, California and Lodi. Lodi's best, but they're all pretty good.
Dog House - both their Cabernet and their Chardonnay are pretty good. Screw caps, too, which is easy.
One bit of wisdom for beginner wine drinkers - when shopping for cheap wines, given the choice between a brand with a cork and a brand with a screw cap, don't falsely assume that the screw cap means bad wine. A lot of wineries are switching over. I recently saw a $60 bottle of wine with a screw cap.

You should all switch to scotch.
I don't like wine enough to really get into it, there are tons of cheaper stuff that is fine for me when I want to drink it.

The best wines are the ones that come personally recommended at your local wineshop (little plug for Saglimbeni's Fine Wines and Sprits in SA, TX).
You don't need to spend alot, either - if the employees are good, they can match your tastes/requirements to a bottle in any price range.
I only wish I could get Long Island wines. Due to NY's stupid export laws, they're impossible to get here. If you haven't tried them, you should - growing conditions are fairly identical to those of the growing regions in Europe, and I believe most of the wineries are old-vine transplants.

A friend of mine is in to wine, he is one of those metro sexuals, but the only person I think he has sex with has a name that starts with Mr. or Sir. This fucking faggot moved from god's country to an inner city, because he likes the 'town life' He also works out at a gay fitness club, although he said he didn't know it was gay when he signed up, he had a chick, but I think she was a tranny, a Very good looking tranny, but by the bulge in the jeans, she had a little more than me.
The wine is for upper class faggots, not that I have a problem with faggots, but the wine sucks.
I think I would be better off collecting marbles in the middle of a street.
I did see that one porno as to where they shoved a bottle of wine in to some chick and fucked her silly with it, that was cool and I wouldn't mind that bottle of wine. Her pussy was fucked up though.

I really don't give a fuck what people think I am, if I get fucked in the ass, then I get fucked in the ass. When I was in the joint, I got it pushed in 4 times.

Okay, completely ignoring the fact that this guy is an idiot, I figured I would clear up a common misconception. If you see someone in a restaurant smelling the cork to insure its good, well, they are morons, because you can't tell a good bottle of wine by smelling the cork. What people are supposed to do is squeeze the bottom of the cork to test if its still moist and spongy, because if not, it is a sign of a potential problem with the cork, which leads to air getting into the bottle, which causes the wine to sour.

If you think white smells bad, try a white that is lighter.

Both are good starters. If you are eating, be sure to pair them with shellfish or lighter fish.
I will find some good reds for ya. Most pinots will be lighter than cabernets.
