Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, maybe start w/Al Green. He is middle-aged white-guy-approved. Anyone have suggestions that aren't 30 years old?

angie stone, macy grey (gray?), joss stone, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, john legend, alicia keys, gnarls barkley... just to name a few. But my best suggestion is the Staple Singers.

Staple Singers, Al Green, Bill Withers I know of.
70's era is preferred, but definitely digging Gnarls Barkley these days.

Sam & Dave, Jr. Walker & the Allstars, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke are some others I didn't see listed above.
Along with Motown stuff, Stax records collections are good to check out also. Isaac Hayes was writing songs for them and the house band was Booker T & the MG's for a lot of the recordings.
