Here at the chinese buffet, they have all the crab legs you can fit in your hole. It seems I can't get the goodness out of the shell in one piece like I used to. I have to peel and rip and pry open with a fork instead of just breaking the fucker open and pulling the delicious meat out.

Anyone have any tricks? Or does it all depend how well the crab is cooked and how soggy the shell is? Am I just getting bad crabs lately or have I lost my game?

Agreed, if it's all floppy and it bends then it is shitty crab or they really fucked up when cooking it. Good crab should crack open to unveil the delicious meat inside.

I buy all of my Alaskan King Crab from a place in Alaska. Recently, they began selling these Crab Shelling Tools (http://www.fishermansexpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=939da02631f8426af39cc014cd 0eb5ad&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FE&Product_Code=95700). They work incredibly well. The inside edge of the longer curved prong is kind of sharp and the inside edge of the shorter prong is thick & flat.

You stick the longer prong inside the shell and the shorter prong outside of it. Then you use it like a prying tool. As you lift the handle, the flat part pushes down on the outside part of the shell and the inside part breaks through it. I'm not sure where else these tools are available, but I would definitely consider bring one with me if I were planning on ordering King Crab somewhere.

In the meantime, you can use your fork the same way. Stick one prong of the fork inside the end of the shell, with the other 3 prongs outside the shell. Then using a prying motion tear at the shell using the prong that's inside the shell.

Back when I was in the Navy... Jesus, this is like my fifth Navy story on this board in just the last week... pathetic. I'm like one of those annoying old coots at the VFW that ramble on about "The Big One" and back when they were "Over There" when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Anyway...

We were in Juno, and me and a bunch of my buds went to this bar/restaurant that was right down on the water. The place was actually built right on a dock. They had this gigantic saltwater tank filled with king crab... hundreds of the bastards... fresh as hell... had just been yanked out of the traps a few days or even hours before. They still had so much fight left in them they tried to jump out of the cooking kettles. So you picked your crab(s), had them weighed, and then you chucked them in one the big boiling kettles yourself. When they were done, you fished them out, put them in the buckets they gave you instead of plates, and took them to these big wooden tables on the dock, where you grabbed one of the bigass wooden mallets and went to town. They brought out big bowls of melted butter, and pitchers of cold beer. When you were done, you just chucked the shells off the dock into the bay. Here's the best part... We stuffed ourselves on crab and had like ten pitchers of beer and the bill came to $130... for five of us.

I'm getting all engorged just thinking about it.

most likely they have been on the steam table too long or they are cheep crab. i work next to a fish market and the manager explained to me that there are a few differnt varietys of crab that they sell as "king" or "snow" he only buys red king crab pre cooked and hard frozen. over cooking or freezing and partaly thawing then refrezing will fuck them up ive never gotten bad crab from him, last week when we were in vegas all the crab was shtty

I miss crabbing seeing as I now live out in the desert. I used to love dropping about 5 cages down and let them soak for a bit. Bullshit around for a while and then hope to pull up a couple of monsters. I never got snapped by a claw in all the years I used to go with my buddies or my dad.
