I'm looking at Christ-0 by Vanden Plas and Celtic Frost's Monotheist.

What are your picks? The year isn't over and I'm looking forward to Zero Hour's new one next month.

Gun to my head top five - no order

Slayer - Christ Illusion
Celtic Frost Monotheist
Bleeding Through - The Truth
In Flames - Come Clarity

Can't even come up with five, What a shitty year. There are some big ones to come, Mastadon, Lamb of God, Iron Maiden, Deicide, etc so maybe get something special for Chrstmas.

I'm with Moe, but we might see some competition from Lamb of God.

I see what you're saying, Dope. By comparison, 2005 had some phenomenal releases, but since many bands do the every two year thing, 2006 is resigned to have few top notch releases, with a bigger 2007. We'll see. For 2006, I see lots of phenomenal releases, with some bad ones, little in between.

That is something I'm with you on. When I started getting back into metal a few years ago, I tried. I tried hard. They don't seem to have the style to them, other than being heavy. I think it's just simply that they were heavy and pushed, and people picked up on it.

theres alot of albums that came otu but i cant think of any right now

Was God Forbid's "constitution of treason" 05 or 06?

me either...i saw them when they opened for slipknot and all i could think is the singer is trying so hard to sound like Chris Barnes....and i dont even like Cannibal Corpse or Six Feet Under.

I saw them once when they were Burn the Priest, then saw them again in Pittsburgh. They were on the same bill as Dimmu Borgir, Cannibal Corpse, and The Haunted. They were ok live, but nothing great. I do kind of like the drummer though.

LOG guitar work is not very creative. That is my biggest gripe with them. The vocals are nothing to brag about, but they do bring some intensity and they are very aggressive.

I like them and the new album is solid. One thing I will say about them and it is a comparison to Slayer, you know what you are going to get.
Not much imagination, not much difference, just solid metal.

christ illusion is very good. i've been waiting for not only new slayer material but the return of dave lombardo to the lineup. paul bostaph was a great drummer for them, but dave just clicks with them better. as for lamb of god, i am a fan, not an uberfan, but a fan of their music, mostly their arrangements. being a musician i tend to pick apart the songs more than just listen. i was anticipating Sacrament because personally i thought Ashes had a more mature sound to it than the Palaces, Gospel and Burn The Priest albums, but Sacrament sounds as if they rushed it, just trying to get it out this year where if they had perhaps tweaked it a little more it could've been more gooder.

I know it's not "metal" but next month is the release of the new BLS album for which i am waiting impatiently. Zakk is one of the few guitar gods left and though he is like a machine in his work (studio, album, tour all year and back to the studio) he has put out a BLS every year since 98 (as well as the forthcoming ozzy record) and has yet to let me down

Be prepared for something that might take you a long time to get into. I love it, know the inside feelings that drove the writing of the album, but I'm still "learning" more and more every time I hear it. It's noisy, textured, and ambient.

Make sure you get the digipak with the extra song. It changes the album, plus you get a ton more artwork.

sknight that alchemist cover looks godly!
Quoted from Bnrmetal.com:

Alchemist is one of those exceedingly rare bands that embrace the premise of metal and then, by incorporating external influences and striving to be individualistic songwriters, come up with a style and sound that is uniquely original and all their own, yet still undeniably metal. Tribal rhythms and a definite Middle East influences are seemlessly blended with brutal riffing, as many songs alternate between relaxed, experimental mellow sections and up-tempo, heavy guitars. The vocals are often semi-death metallish, hoarse and growly, with the occasional ungodly shriek (as found on "Chinese Whispers", perhaps the best song on arguably their best album, Spiritech). Listening to Alchemist has an almost hypnotic effect, as one is seemingly transported to another world as the songs drift by. Simply put, Alchemist is one of the best metal bands to emerge in the last decade -- virtually unknown outside their home of Australia, they are an undiscovered gem. Absolutely brilliant.

No particular order:
In Flames- Come Clarity
Slayer- Christ Illusion
LOG- Sacrament
Mastodon- Blood Mountain
Iron Maiden- A Matter of Life and Death
Celtic Frost- Monotheist

God Forbid, Opeth, and Children of Bodom barely missed the cut with late '05 albums.

I will have to check out Alchemist. The fact that I've only been disappointed 50% of the time by recommendations in this thread is pretty fucking amazing. I haven't stopped listening to Exodus and Mastodon since reading about them in here. The new LOG album is still in heavy rotation though.

track one almost done - Chinese Whispers or something like that. Pretty unique sound. Actually very good and very original. Nice incorporation of keyboards or synth....Looking forward to the rest of it.

They actually have four albums avaiable on Napster...which is their best. Seems like 1st Infantry is the most popular.

Make sure that they are all the same artist. Sometimes the albums are lumped together with a hiphop Alchemist. I only have Embryonics, and Organasm. Organasm is amazing as well.

Just picked up "In the eyes of fire" from Unearth.

If you liked "The oncoming storm"..you'll dig this...a bit more of an aggresive approach, but it's got that older Unearth touch. If you heard a song out of the blue somewhere..you'd know it's them.

Thumbs up!!

Hands down, Mastodon - Blood Mountain. Unfortunately, the retards Ward Cleaver and Coolguy on Liquid Metal dont seem to think so, I have yet to hear anything from the new album. I think I may have heard one song off Leviathon played ever. But I hear crap like Cattle Decapitation played all the fucking time.

I thought this album was boring and not cuz the material is bad man, i mean i can get someone liking this, its heavy, catchy riffs, breakdowns ,solos....and by all means nothing weak about it. BUT i feel like i've heard every one of these unearth songs by them before, it sounds exactly like oncoming storm to me. But if you never heard them before, im sure this would be a good start.

I hear what you're saying, but at least they didn't pull a Shadows Fall and release previously CUT material.

I see LOG has a high approval rate around here...I like it but don't love it...Slayer sound alikes and not a fan of the vocals.

I still have to give it to:

Celtic Frost- Monotheist
Vanden Plas- Christ-0
Alchemist- Embryonics 90-98

The first and the third are so out there, in that they are doing something so entirely different and original that it will take a long time to catch up.

Zero Hour's new album comes out next month. I expect this one to make the list.

The new Maiden is really good. Really good. Got to give those old goats some credit I wish I could see them in October but I am sure they will be back around in the spring or summer.

That CF album is also outstanding, just listening to it again a couple of days ago. Can't wait to see what the next one sounds like.
