I remember back during the heights of metal, Death was kind of looked down up, and the metal press even went as far as to say it ran its course during the mid 90's.

Now metal appears to be in a renaissance with many returning to their roots and some of the old timers being the flag-bearers of good quality metal. Now what I'm seeing to a large extent is progressive's lineage going into death metal and both combined, create music equally aggressive as it is cutting edge on musicianship. I see lots of you guys talking about these new bands and I'm lost, simply because I'm highly selective when it comes to death, in fact only recently accepting it.

What are you guys seeing in metal as a whole, from cutting edge death acts, to a renaissance of great music? Where do you think we're going?

I really can't offer much to this thread, because I always kept myself in the death metal scene. To me it was never on a decline. If anything, I think that it got better, as the Tampa clones started falling off after the initial surge. It pushed bands to define their own Death Metal sound.

Not that I'm much of a metal fan but I got friends in the whole scene (NYDM etc)....Death Metal fans are some of the most knowledgable music fans and they always work hard to support the scene. They are always promoting shows, passing along new bands etc. They've been doing it for years. Death Metal has always been there and will continue to grow. The "mainstream" will never recognize it but it will always be strong.

I have no opinion right now, I'll post later with something.

All I can say is, I like it.

sknight, you just keep posting about good music, it keeps me from having to find my toe trigger.
