you go out to eat, you get fed, you get refills, and you don't have to clean up after yourself. you need to pay for the service as well as the food. i consider myslf to be a very good server, and it just sucks when everything is great according to the guests, but htey give you 2 bucks on a 4o dollar check. it just sucks. remember, as well as the food you have to pay for the service. so please tip your srver well. unless they suck. here is a good rule of thumb take the first number of the check ans multip;y it by two, sorry jus got shitty tip today

I always tip well. Usually 20%. If I get bad service, then the amount goes down.

Don't get your hopes up if they insist on only ordering blue cheese dressing for their salads or question you repeatedly as to why the establishment you work for doesn't offer grape soda as a choice.

I do not envy servers jobs and think they are under paid. They take a lot of shit from people that complain about stupid things.
On the other hand, I was at a restaurant years ago, my wife and I were still dating at the time. The server was handling about 7 tables, no more patrons in the restaurant, and was responsible for clearing tables and doing dishes. I felt bad for her and although she only visited our table about three times in a hour and a half on a $59 and some change bill I left $80 under the plate inside the booklet she left on the table. Since we did not want to wait another half hour for her to come and take the money we left the establishment knowing the booklet with the money was still sitting on the table. The manager was at the door writing down my license plate number while we were driving off, I knew I had a couple of beers in me and decided to stop and see what the problem was. I got out of the car and the manager jumps down my throat, "Was the food you ordered not good enough?", I said "No, it was very good.". He then asks well why didn't you pay, I told him I did and as we walked back in the door I heard the waitress on the phone with the police, I walked the manager back to the table and pointed at the booklet on the table. He picked it up and looked inside to the receipt and money inside. I told him to pay the bill and give me my change back. He added 15% for the waitress and gave me my change, I told him there was money missing since I left $80 in the booklet and he said he took out the 15% gratuity, I told him to give me the rest of my money back or when the police show up I will press charges for theft, he returned with my $20 and change. No apologies, no thank you or nothing from anyone at the establishment for the confusion when I left.
The next day when I called to talk to a daytime manager to complain about the service from the night before by the waitress and the night time manager, the shitdick manager gets on the phone and starts to apologize about the confusion from the previous evening, he said neither him nor his friend saw me leave any money on the table and they were sitting at the table next to us. I told him I did that on purpose since I did not know at the time who he or his boyfriend was and did not want to wait any longer, he offered a free meal and had already reprimanded the server, I told him I would never be back to his establishment again since I was worried about getting a DUI from the two beers I had there. I also told him the service was not that great and how I only saw the server when we placed our order and she brought our drinks that we ordered from the hostess, when she brought the food out I ordered two more drinks that the hostess brought to the table, and when she dropped the check off at the table. He told me I would not have to worry about her and poor service at his establishment, I told him the poor service was due to them making her buss tables and having her do dishes and hung up on him.
I still tip well since I know there are assholes in this world that do what happened to you, even though I had a really bad experience with a server, and I say FU to the shitdicks that leave bad tips.

I was never a server but I will always over tip, unless the service really sucks dick. Like if the guy takes forever for no good reason or he only comes by once during the meal and the place is nearly empty and there is enough staff. I usually never blame the server for bad food unless he didnt write down specifcally what I wanted. Generally if its ok service I tip 20-30% if its great service I tip 50-70% depending on the price of the meal. If the meal is small enough like just me and my girl and we're at a diner for a quick meal but the service is great the bill will be like 15 or 20 I will usually tip the price of the meal or a couple of bucks short. I look at it this way. The better you tip when you go back to that place the better you will be treated by the wait staff. Who will go out of their way to make sure your meal is great so it works both ways you get a great meal and service and they get a nice tip.

But remember that this rule only applies to checks < $100. If you followed that rule for a $150 check, you'd only give a $2 tip.
The math is $20 for every $100 in the check. Then multiply the "10's digit" by 2 and add that to however many 20's you came up with.

In NY, I double or triple the sales tax (avg 8%) depending on how well the service was.

I had a couple acquaintances down for the weekend. We went out to dinner, and you'd think that since one of them has waited tables in the past, and is now currently waiting tables again, that she'd give up the Jew stereotype and tip well. She also annoys me because she's *always* asking for something different than what's on the menu. I hate people that do that ALL THE TIME. If you're that picky about your food, stay home and cook for yourself.

I'm with ya. I never served, but I always take care of people unless it was a really fucked up time.
Waiters salary is based on a certainamlunt of tips so you should tip.
There were two times that I had service where the waitress checked our food to ensure it was correct and took care of the cheese problem before she brought the food out, she then waited for my wife to sut the steak to ensure there was no pink in the meat as requested.
When she had some down time, all of the others stood around and chatted, she did also, and that is ok, but she was the only one that did NOT have her back to her tables, she was able to keep an eye on things and brough fresh drinks when our glass was empty, we didn' have to ask.
I think she got 50% tip that night, or at least 45% +/-
There was one other time we had a waiter, and there is another peson who goes around filling up everyone's water (with ice) I ordered no ice, they filled my cup and I didn't bitch, I went to lift the glass and my waiter was standing there with a glass of water without ice. I tipped like a mad man because he deserved it.
fuck cheap motherfuckers! Probably a fucking Jew.
