Congress woman says only Christians should hold office
MIAMI (AP) - Florida Congresswoman Katherine Harris is being criticized for telling a Baptist journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and that God and America's founding fathers did not intend the country to be "a nation of secular laws."

The Republican candidate for U-S Senate told the Florida Baptist Witness that separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."

Harris also said that if Christians are not elected, politicians will "legislate sin," including abortion and gay marriage.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Florida Democrat who is Jewish, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was "disgusted" by Harris's comments.

Fucking right-wing Christian conservatives sicken me. I'm so mad their spokespeople stopped encouraging them NOT to vote.

Wow, a politician running for office telling a particular interest group exactly what they want to hear. Who'd of thunk it.

She didn't say what the title claims. She made comments that without context seem overzealous.

Exact quote: "If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said.

86 percent of America identifies themselves as Christian, it is not like this is surprising. They feel comfort knowing there officials are guided by the Bible and Christian philosophy. If there was an Athestic candidate, I would feel comfort knowing his beliefs will play a part in his decisions. This quote does not matter, it will not make her lose votes, she appeals to the Christian Right, if anything, this will help her more than harm her.

Not being a Christian I have to agree with her statement. If I were in office I would indeed be a sinful politician. I support legalized prostitution, eliminating most anti-obsenity laws, recognition of gay marriage, and as much as I hate abortion I would be pro-choice. So what's wrong with what she said? If her constituents are against those things I listed, they really shouldn't vote for a fellow like me.

Not that it would matter since I would have about 10-20 good meaty scandals in my past if I chose to run... I'd make Bush and Clinton look like rookies.

Right now this is the game the right is playing to get votes. And it's been working.

I've actually considered delving into local politics a bit. But being an Atheist, I know I won't get far. As soon as someone finds out there's no way I would be elected. So....

As opposed to blowing up people who don't agree... But anyhoo...

If I remember right, you can look through all 50 state Constitutions and find that each and every one of them references God. Not Jesus, Allah, or G-d, but God in the general sense.
The seperation of church and state as it is seen now is the farce since it's been twisted to mean that no religion, and many times it seems especially Christianity, should have any impact bearing or weight on anything the government official does, believes or says. if there's any possible relation to organized religion, it's in offence to the government and this necessary seperation. Truth is, the fact that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" simply means that Congress shall not promote one religion above another, limiting a person's social and or political status and advancement to whether or not they conform to the federally established religion. Hell, if you look at say John Robert's nomination to the SCOTUS, some people thought he couldn't be fair on abortion because he was Catholic, where apparently your religion in politics should be flat out atheism (not to offend any atheists here, but that's how I see it if you're not allowed to bring your own religion to the table). Because of his religion, his social and political advancement was almost held up. Where was the seperation there?

I'm praying that this is sarcasm. Islam and Christianity are the only two religions these days? HOLY SHIT! Is this what it's come to?

Islam is the only bad thing in the world. Must destroy Islam. All problems go away if Islam destroyed. Must destroy Islam.

I said they weren't scary. I didn't absolve all christians of all guilt of anything. The shrill nature of your initial post made it seem as though you were afraid of "Christians". I simply don't find them to be tops on my list of things to worry about.
