Back in the good ol days you used to be able to pick up a dish and receiver from Walmart and install it yourself in a matter of minutes. But now that they are so paranoid about hackers stealing their shit you need to pay some lazy 19 year old to come by when it's convenient for him and hook it up.

From what I remember Directv wasn't the easiest thing in the world to hack. Come to think of it, I don't remember seeing any install packages in Best Buys when I was just there.... The answer is "possibly". Depending on where you live you probably received a 18" round dish. This is sufficient for the basic line of channels (no HDTV, Locals in smaller markets, and foreign language channels). If you want these you need an oval dish. If the dish is still pointed and wired up, you are ready to receive programming, and just need to turn on your account via a phone call. Another caveat is that Directv swapped all their cards out, so if it's been a few years, you probably have an obsolete card, and will need to get a new one to activate it.

As for hacking, it's been a few years now since Directv could be hacked for free tv. Or so someone told me once.
