What is your philosophy on tipping?

Here's what I do:
Say the bill is $35. $3.50 is %10.... %15 is "respectable." But %15 is not easy math to do you in your head, especially if your mathematically retarded. So I'll normally just add on a buck or two to that and call it good. Probably a 5 or 6 dollar tip... depending on service though.

20 Percent...unless at a bar 1 buck per every other beer
I get told I tip too much

I am also a good tipper. I usually stick with about 20-25% but I have also gotten much more cut-throat now too. There are so many really shitty waiters and waitresses now that if they just suck, I tell them and then I don't tip them. If they are slightly good, or at least try and fail, I will leave them 20%.

10-18-2006, 08:45 AM
Usually 20%. If they suck I just leave a quarter to let them know that a: I didn't forget to tip. and b: this what you deserve for your shitty efforts.

I use the Al Bundy method. I put a stack of money on the table and for every mistake i tell her and take some money away.
I actually never know what to tip. If i go to the bar and get a burger that is 5 bucks and the tax is like .60 cents, do i tip 1 or 2? I know i can tip what i want but i feel really bad tipping 1 for actual food service.

Average service gets 15%. Decent gets 20%. Great gets 25%+ depending on how good it is.
Poor service will get 5-10%
If I get the type of service that makes me feel the need to bitch... they arent' getting shit, I had better be paying LESS for my meal, and I won't be going back to that place.

Usually 18% and them round up a little. If its a small bill, I usally end up throwing in a little more.
I also will not tip well or at all for crappy service. If the food sucks, that's not the servers fault, so I won't penalize them for that. They have to work pretty hard (or not at all) to get me to leave no tip. I have a number of restaurants as clients, so I can usually tell what is the kitchen's fault and what is the servers fault.
I also don't like the tip cups at places like Dunkin Donuts. By law, waiters at restaurants can get paid a fraction of minimum wage per hour because it is assumed that they will get tips that raise their total pay plus their involvement with you is something longer than handing you a styrofoam cup. Same goes for bartenders. Plus, they get taxed on the tips, or are supposed to.
Someone working the counter at some donut shop or deli is making an actual hourly wage. There is a deli near my house that I go to regularly, and every few days or at the holidays, I'll toss something in the bucket, but that's because I can walk in and they know what I usually order and how I want it prepared. I will also tip at other places if I am getting a large or difficult order, but generally not the way I would tip a waiter.

Here's a tip
the "tip" of my Hog!!!
I am a big tipper too...it is hard for me not to tip...if the service is slow, it may not be the server's fault...it could be the kitchen

I usually leave around 30%. We usually order drinks, so the waiter is going to have to kick something back to the bartender and some places have to share with the bus staff.
I'm also not a complete asshole and want people who handle my food to remember me and be nice next time.
I will also leave a little extra if I eat at a table alone. Example...I go on Friday mornings to get my fancy man breakfast at Katz's Deli. The bill is around $8.00, but I sit and read the paper for a few minutes. I will leave $12.00 for the waitstaff because I am one person sitting at a table for 4 and they are always cool and nice to me.
And here is the bad part....I have seen so many waiters get stiffed by the schwoogies I feel that I have to make up for their lack of basic decency. A couple of weeks ago, a table of Samuel L. Jackson impersonators must have had a $130.00 bill. They left $3.00...bullshit.

On Long Island, tax is ~8% so if the service is decent, I double the tax. If the service is really good, I'll add to it.
At a bar, $1-2 for every round (unless I'm ordering multiple drinks).
I like Wes's idea of only leaving $.25 for shitty service. Let them know that you didn't forget but they really sucked.

Usually 15-20% unless the service sucks.
If the service sucks I'll tear about 1/3 off of a $20 bill and leave it sticking out from under a plate.

So at a bar a dollar per beer is alright?
PCLoadLetter
10-18-2006, 05:21 PM
20% is my starting point. Good service gets the 20%, the once-per-year over-the-top-outstanding service gets 25%. Mediocre service gets 15%, and poor service gets either 10% or a penny, depending upon how poor it is. I've left a penny tip maybe three or four times in my life, which is reserved for service so poor that it defies any logical explanation (like half an hour between table visits when that waitperson's "section" is dead).
I don't stiff someone who's obviously overworked and doing their best, but when they ignore you and/or screw up your order (such as forgetting to bring you your appetizer) and/or let your drinks sit dry for twenty minutes and/or throw an attitude and/or make you wait 45mins for the check after you axe for it (and so on), they get a tarnished penny. :)
Here's a question for anyone who's ever waited tables... When you go to a place with a big party and they charge you 18-20% extra on your check for the size of your party (usu. 8+ persons), does that overage actually go to the waiter/waitress that worked your table, or does that go "to the house" and you're expected to tip on top of that?

If the service is good then a little more than double what the tax is. (in NYC).

So at a bar a dollar per beer is alright?
Depends upon the beer, doesn't it? If it's the typical NY-area $5 pint for "the good stuff", sure... But a buck a beer when you're drinking $2 8oz Bud Light?
I typically tip bartenders on the same basis that I tip waiters, 20% of the tab... But not if they play that "I'm going to serve all the chicks at the bar first, even if they wandered up after you, then the guys that I know, and then you" game.

10-18-2006, 05:31 PM
yeah Im too lazy to figure out the 15-20% thing, I always just double the tax - thats like 16%-17% in ny anyway right? If its shitty service Ill take back a few bucks, or give a few extra for exceptionally nice and helpful waiters
delievery boys get 15% or more since the orders are never that large anyway, unless they take way to long
LZMF1
10-18-2006, 06:04 PM
i do a standard 20% for most everything. that's a 20% tip on the total bill including the taxes. i'm usually too lazy to figure it out exactly so i always round up.
Absolutely
10-18-2006, 06:15 PM
The thing I hate most about tipping is in the bar. The whole point to tipping there is so you can get faster service next time right? So next time there's a big crowd they see you as " hey that guy gave me two bucks last time" what do you need.
But then they never see who leaves the tip at the bar, and how can they remember?
So, I hate giving them tips for just unscrewing the cap of my beer. I can see if they actually make you something..

10-18-2006, 06:20 PM
I had a friend, who, if he had bad service, would just give a retardedly low tip... like 2 dimes or something.
His theory was, if you leave no tip at all, they might think you forgot, or didn't have enough money to tip them. If you leave a shitty tip, they know they stunk.
SurlyTruckDrivr
10-18-2006, 07:17 PM
I intend on tipping 20% when I sit down, then I let the service dictate from there. How often are they checking in to see if anything is needed, great service/cute waitress usually get a little more. If I'm at a nice place I almost always give a little extra.

Fuck that tipping shit. I am cheap basterd I pay enough for bar drinks anyway. If I am hotel screw the non-english speaking peorson cleaning my room I'll never see her again anyway. I only tip in Fancy places when I with family or on a date as not to look like the scumbag I am. Plus the people working there will think twice of the shitty job they have. And get there asses back into school.

Must...not..type..racial...slur.....There, I'm past the urge.
Usually, I give 20% of the total bill, tax included. At a bar, a buck or two a round. Maybe a little extra at the end of the night if I don't have to wait for service.

buck per beer is a good tip , but i want a fuckin buy-back every so often, especially if I'm not drinking alone. 5 bux per beer, 3 or 4 beers each thats like 50 bux just do go drink with your girl so a buy-back or 2 would be nice.
when i go out to eat I try to always give over 20%, I think it's cause I work on tips so I know what it's like to get 4 or 5 bux on a 180 dollar order.

My tipping philosophy? If the farmer doesn't have a shotgun, then you place your feet about hip width apart and get your shoulder into the hock. Then push hard and fast- that cow will go right over.
(Seriously, I thought that's what this thread was about- I couldn't understand why anyone would talk for 2 pages about cowtipping. I'm retarded sometimes.)

I spent 7 long years in little shit towns outside of Oneonta- Andes, Delhi, and the like. God I hate it up there. For the record, I never cow-tipped. Or mud bogged. We did do "Suicide Runs" tho- driving above 80 on back roads for miles, usually while drinking. Stupid asses.
Oh, and I tip about 16-20% for shitty to good service, up to 50% for better than average service. I've been known to tip more for excellent service. Of course, I do leave places quite shitty so my drunken happiness makes me a good tipper more than the server.

i usualy tip 20%cash for good service delevery dude gets 5-7$
now when im at a bar i will tip 5$ for my first drink then a buck or so ever round, hell if i go into a bar just to smoke i will leave a 1$ on the bar under my dirty ashtray. if im eating in the bar i will tip 20%cash for the total tab, and my wife and i usualy drink more than we eat
if for some reason im pissed at the server i will say something then leave 10%and add it to my check and put it on my card so they cant pocket it and have to pay taxes on it. but i always go to the same bar and most of the staff knows me so i always get exelent service and free drinks. i also have given marbles or other glass trinkets to the staff there so they remember me

Both my wife & I always tip 20-25% for good service, more for outstanding service.
If the service is really lousy and the server didn't give a fuck or had a shitty attitude they won't get 20%.

OK, let me preface this by telling you that I am a cook at a restaurant, I'm from CA, and I won't even go into an establishment that I am not prepared to tip out at least 20%. But let us assume that you are faced with the most incompetent server you have ever encountered. What do you do?
Take random change, and drop it into a tall glass of water. Then take your menu, or any other sturdy (preferably laminated) material, cover the cup, then flip it upside-down. Carefully place on the table, and slide out the menu as quickly as possible. There is no way to get the change (or clean the table) without spilling the water.

Ok I have done that...
I remember that I heard there was an old code as a waiter for good service or bad service at a place I worked at:.....the usual 15% plus a Nickel if it was good and that they would ask for you if they came again...(hinting more of a tip),
15% Tip plus a penny if you sucked....meaning that they don't ever want you again to wait on them.

If I get really good service, 20%. As the service declines, so does the percentage.
