Apple patent hints at satellite radio
A recently discovered patent application from Apple hints at the company's exploration into satellite radio technology. The filing -- published on October 19th and originally filed in August of 2005 -- refers to two distinct methods of integrating the iPod with satellite services. The first aspect of the patent describes the ability to tune "into a wireless signal (e.g., AM/FM radio, digital radio, or Wi-Fi)" using an iPod-style player with "the capability to accept accessories to add the necessary functionality." While this may refer to Apple's Radio Remote released late in 2005, the patent's explicit mention of support well beyond AM/FM radio is significant and may signal a future add-on that would supply satellite radio directly to the iPod, according to Electronista.
Even more interesting is the description of how such accessories would share information between the iPod and external receivers. In another section of the patent application, Apple refers to an "in-vehicle receiver-player" that would connect to both a music player and an in-car network to synchronize track data between the two connected devices.

"If the in-vehicle receiver-player... is playing audio content that is received from a radio frequency broadcast (e.g., AM, FM, or XM), the portable media device... is able to determine descriptive media information associated with the audio content being played," writes Apple.

The concept would let iPods not only display metadata from live radio (a feature already present in the Radio Remote) but would also enable the user to flag individual songs heard through these mediums -- including XM Satellite Radio -- for a later purchase through a "Media Purchase System" such as the iTunes Music Store.

I wonder if this story is correct. The little doggy company has been hinting about an ipod deal.

Did they get the companies wrong? Did xm beat them to the punch? What the FUCK is going on here?:icon_eek:

Hmmmm... I have two, and they're both humming along just fine well past five months. :idontknow

In my case, it's the XM units that need replacin'.

If this is true, it will kill Sirius. The only drawback is why would XM market with an iPod if the Inno is susposed to be an iPod type device.

XM doesn't make the Inno device, so they have nothing to lose. Pioneer would be screwed, though.

I hope that it would record O&A with pad data intact.

I love my Ipod and most of my friends who either hate O&A or don't listen to the radio but rather their Ipod will be more aware of not just O&A but XM. Well done!

Not really true.
XM develops their tech and radios in house and than outsources the manufacturing to other companies like Pioneer and Samsung.

I think.....

I mean, thats why we had 3 different types of XM2Go's from different companies (Myfi, Airware, Tao)
And now we have 3 new XM2Go's (Inno, Helix, Audiovox's to be made XM2go).

Ahhh.... didn't know that.

I stand corrected.

This how Sat. radio will surive. But teaming up with MP3 makers. I personally hate Ipods. And prefer either Toshiba or creative labs myself. But the IPOD is the biggest and would be great for XM. The car market is great to introduce you to the product but getting hitched with Apple will be huge and maybe a knockout blow for the other company...

From looking at the application it looks like it could go either company they decide. I know a lot of guys hate Apple and Ipod, but if XM can make this deal it would be huge.

If they can come up with a better antennae/headphone system then i'd be all for it...they need some kick ass inner earphone style antennae headphones...
