I guess I might put this here as I have nowhere else to put this but say someone wanted to get into freelancing. Not enough to actually make a living but just for some extra cash on the side. Writing an article here or there or pitching a story to some publication. Or whatever else someone can do as a freelancer.

I figure that with the amount of people posting here, at least some people might know anything about becoming a freelancer.

I am doing web design, some minor development and graphics freelance. Its definitely not a way to make a living these days cause the market is too saturated with people that do it. Nice side money tho. I did a self storage company site and got $600, took maybe 5-6 hours.

I'm freelancing in video production (shooting and editing)

Pretty much, I have one show that I work with, and it's not paying the bills, though I used to be raking in the cash.

To get into it? Quit whatever job you have....that's really about it. Take any contacts lists you have for your field and start calling, emailing, or faxing.

Check out a "Writers Market" book. They are put out every year and provide info for freelancing. The books provide contacts and different magazines that accept freelance articles. I went to school for Journalism and one of my Professors told us to get this book because its the best tool for freelancing

Bump from 2 years ago because, as embarrassing as it probably sounds, I've thought of doing freelancing for awhile to make extra money and now want to give something of a go. Not going to devote my life to it but just want to see if it can take me anywhere or get me any money (probably not).

So, aside from Weiter's Market, does anyone know any good freelance writing sites? All the ones I've seen look a bit untrustworthy and every review I read says that each site is some sort of scam artist.

And I do want some legitimacy about it. I don't want to just blog for no reason. After all, I don't have the skills of a Trucker Max.
