Am I the only one watching this show?
Sure the quaterback breaking his back is exactly like that movie with James Van Derbeek a couple years ago. But there are a lot of positives.
I really think this is one of the best directed shows on TV. It looks great, the acting for the most part is really well done, and Minka Kelly is one of the hottest chicks on TV.

I like the show also, but the similarities between it and the movie are a little too close. Even down to the same woman playing both the wives. Did anyone else notice this? Both teams named the Panthers, one is the Dillian and the other was like Perman or something.

Yeah the wife thing is a little strange, talk about being type cast.
I heard somewhere the only reason it's Dillan in the TV show and not the other name was because the school wouldn't sign off on it for the TV show.

I can't tell if the wife is hot or not. She has a slammin' body, but her face is eh.

Time to revive this thread. I got caught up on the first season on DVD and it's very good. I'm worried how it's going to do on Friday Nights though.

i don't care if its supposed to be a girl show. this show rules. the first two episodes have been great. i feel so bad for the kid who killed the guy. and the girl is f'n him to make herself feel better. even feel bad for the QB kid also. and the mom is going crazy. having a one year old myself, it would be nuts to do on your own. the other daughter is a real bitch.

I read the book about 5 years before the movie came out and was riveted. I saw the movie and it was nothing like the book, but rather a Disney fairy tale pile of shit in disguise.
The author, Buzz Bissinger, went to Odessa, TX for a year in the late 80s because he wanted to write a book that captured the hysteria and fanaticism of high school football in rural Texas.
Instead, the book ended up being an expose of the pressure these kids were put under, to win at all costs, to play with permanent injuries that were masked with steroids and painkillers. He displayed the blatant racial divide of the town, how some of the black kids on the team couldn't read a sentence. He researched schoolboard funds and showed how misappropriated they were. They built a state of the art stadium with announcers booths and luxury boxes for football, while fields for girls sports were disheveled and unmaintained and unsafe for play. They spent more money yearly buying camera equipment to take pictures of opposing team's plays and printers to print them out and take them down to the field then they spent on textbooks for classes, etc etc.
That book came out, and Bissinger got deaths threats every day for 5 years after that. But the book brought a whole lot of change to the town and single handedly improved every condition I mentioned above.
I think they don't want to cast the city of Odessa in a negative light again, and that's why they made the movie this "happy go lucky, follow your dreams" type shit. But my interest for this show, because of that movie, is zilch!!!

I feel so dirty for watching the show....damn Julie for dumping poor Matt...I hope he bangs the hell out of all her friends and the Swede leaves her pregnant and she is stuck in that crappy town while Matt goes on to be a Wall Street big wig and rubs it her fine as hell face...

I got the DVDs for like $20 when it came out. Finally got around to them. I watched the first two episodes last night. It was pretty good, but it doesn't seem realistic. I mean, radio shows for high school football? Stores closing on Friday to go to a high school football game? Give me a break.
Plus, I was kind of upset they went with the age old cliche of "super-awesome star QB gets horribly injured and no-name backup has to come in and suddenly all the hotties love him" story.
Connie Britton is so hot sometimes and nasty in other shots. Nice body though.

You don't know much about the South and it's love for high-school football.
Believe it. There really are some towns down there which are THAT dead serious about their football. And I'm talking about high-school football.

That is so bizarre to me. I mean it's not like Texas doesn't have any good pro or college teams to root for. Why watch HS football when you can easily see a nationally ranked college team, or (sadly) the dirty Cowboys every week?

My brother lives in Dallas, the stadium where the high school team plays is rediculous. High school football there is more important than anything else. 2 years ago they were the state champs. Last year they didn't make it and it was like someone had died.
