After reading JoeFromDetroit’s brilliant find, notstarring.com it got me thinking about bad career choices in movies and TV…

Some of the bigger idiotic moves in my opinion..

David Caruso leaving NYPD Blue. He should thank God every day for CSI: Mimi because he left (as the star no less) what was the edgiest, most talked about show on TV at the time in the height of its popularity. “Kiss of Death” was supposed to be his big-screen coming out party. You write the joke.

Everything Cuba Gooding Jr. did after he won an Oscar. He had all the bargaining power in the world after he won the award and he wasted it on crap films like “Snow Dogs”. He could have been a leading man but instead now has to accept minor roles like he took in the upcoming failure, “Norbit”.

Julianna Margulies leaving ER. As far as I know she is one of the few characters to leave ER willing. “Ghost Ship” has to be in every conversation when debating “worst movie ever”.

And my personal favorite…

Tom Selleck turning down “Raiders of the Lost Arc” to concentrate on Magnum P.I. In a way this one is kind of unfair as Magnum was a top show on TV at the time and he knew that Raiders was going to cement Ford as a superstar? But Selleck (who honestly probably would have been pretty good in that role) could have had a huge career. I’m sure he is still kicking himself for that decision.

Look what happened to George Clooney after he left ER. The man gets $15 million per film and he can now order up whatever pussy he wants like it's on the menu.

Stephen Baldwin:

From "The Usual Suspects" to "Bio-Dome"...

...and now to Hardcore Christianity

Except for Clooney, ER really seems to be a curse once you leave it.

Look at Noah Wyle, he was on that show for 12 years, and now he's doing cable movies about librarians. Eriq La Salle, who I'm pretty sure was offered ridiculous "Friends" style money to stick around, but he quit and now he's doing guest stars on "Without A Trace".

From "Wall Street" and "Platoon" ...

That's not quite fair. Charlie Sheen has an incredibly sucessful sitcom and I say incredibly b/c is is sooo unwatchable and he's being paid an unholy sum of money to do it.

It's also not quite fair because Charlie has some stuff in between the late 80s and today...also, he was fucking hammered through most of that time period which has got to affect judgment.

It's not like a Stephen Baldwin thing where you go from one of the all-time great movies to Bio-Dome immediately after. That was just a horrendous decision that killed his career.

I'd say Robert Reed banging one too many didn't work out so well

One of the big ones - Shelley Long leaving Cheers to be a "movie star".

Craig Kilborn leaving The Daily Show. His replacement: Jon Stewart.

Suzanne Somers fighting with everyone on Three's Company because she thinks she's the star. It took the Thighmaster to revive her career.

Everything Alicia Silverstone's done since Clueless.

He wasn't the only one. Gary Burghoff, Wayne Rogers, and Larry Linville all left, too.

That's gonna doom his show. Chicks just don't buy into gay guys playing straight. Also it's very coincidental that he looks like a spitting image of what a young Ian McKellan must've looked like.

Those 3 left on kind of good terms. They hated McLean Stevenson so much they killed off his character so there was no possibility of a return.

when you put it that way, it might be a good thing for his career. he can play a young Eric Lensherr in that Magneto prequel that's been talked about.

Michael Cimino directing Heaven's Gate. The guy directed The Deer Hunter (I think he won an Oscar, too) and afterwards decided to direct an epic western. The movie was a huge flop, nearly sunk its studio, and as far as I know Cimino's career never recovered.

Tom didnt turn down Raiders of the Lost Ark he already did the pilot for Magnum and they decided to pick up that show and it was sucessful for many years and did you not see a little movie called Three Men and a Baby? :action-sm

I disagree. The daily show IS stewart... it wouldnt have achieved the success it did without him. With Kilborn it would have remained a cute little cable show that was basically was an extended Weekend Update on SNL.

The first South Park episode:
Kyle: "Do your David Caruso imitation..."
Ike: "It's my turn" ...and then he leaps

Tom Selleck probably would have been a decent Indiana Jones, but then he wouldn't have done a movie I haven't seen in a while, but laugh like an idiot at: Folks!

If you haven't seen it, check it out. He gets the crap beat out of him throughout the whole movie. Favorite line: "Hey one nut! Want a beer?"

As far as Charlie Sheen, he's had a career that most actors dream about. They hope for 1 good role, he's had a number of big movies, then stepped into a sitcom on shaky ground when its star, Michael J. Fox, left and kept it alive. Now he's got another successful sitcom that should also easily hit syndication numbers (at least 100 episodes) to keep money rolling in for the rest of his life.

He's worked consistently, looks like he's having fun doing movies and/or tv shows and bangs hot women. Yeah, I guess he really made some bad career decisions.

To be fair, it was only on shaky ground when Michael J. Fox was on.

What, nothin'?

Hoo hoo letting Billy West and Jackie go thus ruining his show.

All kidding aside, Billy did real well after leaving, but poor Jackie, has he done anything but standup since leaving?

Others...

Ben...

Rick, although according to what he said at the hard rock for the XM announcement, he really wanted to come back.

Dice bashing the boys, the one place that still gave him a platform to perform.

The direction goes to the producers not the host, that show was more edgy with kilborn than with stewart. Stewart seems so full of him self lately that is have become unwatchable with all his hollier than thou smirks. Colbert was the only reason to keep watching and now that hes gone there's no point to watch the show at all.
