I stumbled across Pestgamming.com today; I was fascinated and joined up. I spent most of this afternoon exploring the forums there.
I’m pretty confident my computer can handle it, when I bought it a few years back, I had it built for video and photography editing. I’m definitely looking at the combat games like the Battlefield series or games with a contemporary setting.
So, I guess my question is how does a newbie gamer get started? What would be a first good game to try? Any suggestions, info or links are greatly appreciated.
By the way, I’m posting this here on Wackbag because I didn’t see a newbie forum on Pestgaming.

Not necessarily true. I built my desktop for gaming about 3 years ago now and it still runs every game out at full speed and fully accelerated. In a year it may not, but no game can test it at this point. If he built his for video editing, he most likely has a lot of ram and a nice speedy cpu, which = more gooder for gaming. He might need to grab a new video card though.

Everything looks good, the only thing that may cause a hiccup on BF2 is the video card. Consider uprgrading to a 256Mb or 512Mb.

Everything looks good... But you need more memory. There's a shitload of OnA people on BF2. We have a lot of beginners, who in a months are now pretty descent and can handle there own. Just get on a squad and we can protect and walk you through... Plus we do a shitload of OnA trash talking...
Also we have a monthly gaming nite which is only OnA members... PM or xfire me and i'll introduce to the shitdicks over at PG.com

OK, so I was in Best Buy checking out games. I only picked up ChessMaster for now. My plan now is to get killer video and sound cards and add some memory. They also had some killer joysticks but Im gonna look online for a more economical option. Once up to speed I’ll be on Pestgaming.
Everyone, thanks for the info and help also, thanks to the start of the newbie forum on Pestgaming.

You Really Dont need a killer sound card unless u have a really good sound system like speakers and shit but i wouldnt go crazy if ur gunna spend the money put it all into a new video card and ram

I wouldn't worry about a sound card. Get another gig of ram and a decent video card. Depending on what you want to spend, the GeForce 7200 is around $200 and the 7300 is usually around $250 and a really good card.
As far as controllers go, when PC gaming is concerned, learn to use the keyboard and mouse.

He'll get buried in CoD. He'll end up getting frustrated with it and leave.
Go with the Battlefield series M8. Go with a support class like medic. It'll get you plenty of points and will show you the ropes without having to be highly skilled in shooting. Public servers can be rough as far as newbies go but don't let it discourage you. Just have fun with it.
Jump on the Pest server and ask for help if you see any of us.
EDIT: CHESSMASTER? CHESSMASTER?
Get the FUCK outta my face! :icon_evil
Edit Edit: I shouldn't even be speaking to you but if your system can run...."cheesemaster"..... pick up Half Life 1 and play Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic etc. your system can handle it.

You gotta keep in mind; I'm a 41 year old bum. When I was in HS the only gaming option was Atari Pong! Years latter, in college, I got a copy of a text based game (forgot the name) where you explored this mysterious house try to find clues to a secret world or something. I played that on a 286! That’s my gaming experience.
Now for chess, I've been playing that on and off since I was 5. Figured I would get back into it.
Thanks for the recommendations; I'll be picking them up for some practice.

To take this thread in a slightly different direction, I've been considering getting into the MMORPG's for quite awhile, but could never justify spending a subscription fee plus the cost of a game as a college student. With my impending graduation, though, I'll be living at home until I can save up money until I can get my own place, and side from weekends at the bars with my friends, I need to find a way to occupy my free time. What are some particularly good MMORPG's and what are some things/tips I should keep in mind if I decide to pursue this?

Definately do what others suggested and get more RAM and a new GFX Card. But in the mean time. Go get HL2 with CS or Day of Defeat, and start figuring out how to use the Mouse Keyboard combination. You can practice on our CS server against Bots to hone your skills. Also, ask us over at PG.com how we bind our keys for FPS games, and try the different combinations to find what is comfortable for you. The reason I suggest HL2 is, The Source Engine can run on lower end Systems, so you can at least start to get the Mouse Keyboard Controls down now and it won't be too much of a shock once your rig is ready for BF2.

The keyboard is easier to use for computer games, too many features in games for a joystick to be usefull. There are gamepads that give a feel of joysticks but I found the keyboard is already there so why not use it?

If its what I'm thinking about...you were playing the Infocom text adventures....ZORK! (1,2, and 3) I loved them....played them on my Commodore 64 :icon_lol:
I play guildwars have factions and the new nightfall. Online play is free. Join a guild if you want, but they are filled with stupid kids farming faction. I see people who listen to O&A on there by their char names, and sometimes by their chat. Don't think there is a O&A specific guild there, but I may be wrong.
You don't really fathom how big the show is until you see it's impact on everything. Including online games.

ZORK, Bingo !!!! I really liked thinking out all the clues and the combo of stuff you had to do.
Thanks for the name!
I forgot in my earlier post (since I was thinking along the lines of PC gaming) back in the early 90s, I bought a Saturn system and got hooked on the game Myst, another mystery kind of game.

You can actually play those text games online now...web based. Kinda cool lookin back at the old days. When I had to sit in my office a few years ago with a shit P2 box with a 16meg video card, I would play ZORK and HITCHHIKERS GUIDE online. Good time killer.

OK, so I just spent a couple of hours playing Half Life 1 on their "Beginners Server" .......:jump :jump :jump
I think I lasted maybe 10 minutes the longest before I got killed. I need to work on my keyboard / mouse skills a whole crap more before I even think of BF2

anyhoo, glad to see you're giving HL1 a try. Ignore the "beginners" server label, no one pays attention to it. Stick with practicing your keyboard skills. It takes some practice but finding a game you can really enjoy helps immensely.
Go pick up Unreal Tournament 2004. you can play the bots who are creepily like playing real people so you don't have to be self-concious about learning the ropes. They'll even talk smack. It has a software rendering mode that doesn't require any fancy card, it looks ok and you'll have an absolute blast with it, trust me.
