What would be a good system for a 5 year old boy to keep him amused on long trips? New, used, cheap. I don't know a thing about game systems, and more importantly, don't care, but it might make the miles go by more quietly.

Exactly, go for the advance, don't even bother with the DS with a 5 year old. There's still plenty of games to play on there, especially the old SMB remakes.

And Pokemon. Pokemon will keep kids out of your hair for hours. However, I would honestly suggest the DS, because you can still play all the old Advance games on the DS, plus the DS games. And Animal Crossing on the DS will also keep kids quiet for a long long time.

this kid is going into kindergarden... get him the ds so he has some braging rights... if you get him a gameboy advanced, he will get kicked in the mouth.

So far I'm leaning towards Don the Trucker's suggestion. That must be an 8" screen on that baby. Sweet.

I'm looking on ebay at the advance and DS. They are all priced about right. The trick is to find one with some games he would like.

well what does he like? any favorite movies or cartoons? because just about every movie or cartoon aimed at kids has a video game tie-in too. and as was earlier mentioned, you really can't go wrong with any number of the Super Mario Bros. games.

OK i said the DS earlier, but no matter what game you get him make sure he doesn't play that shit at home. as an 18 year old my advice is to make sure that he doesn't get to addicted to video games.

Duct tape and a rolled carpet are also a great way to transport children without the excessive whining and screaming.

For a younger kid...yes a DS is fine...When he grows up a little...whatever incarnation of the PSP that's out at the time would be better.
