'Sunny' keeps shining on FX
Net brings back laffer for third season
By DENISE MARTIN

'It's Alway Sunny in Philadelphia'
FX has greenlit 15 new half-hours of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to begin production next spring, up from 10 last season.
FX is bringing back critically acclaimed laffer "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" for a third season.

Danny DeVito has committed to continue as a series regular for all subsequent seasons.

Renewal makes "Sunny" the most successful comedy on basic cable in recent years. Skein is one of the few scripted, live-action primetime laffers to make it to a third season on ad-supported cable.

FX has greenlit 15 new half-hours to begin production next spring for a premiere in summer. Order reps an increase from 10 episodes last season and seven in the first.

Though ratings for the last season were modest relative to those of FX's other originals, "Sunny" posted year-to-year gains and earned critical raves.

Second season averaged 1.3 million total viewers and 880,000 adults 18-49, up 15% and 18%, respectively, from the show's first season. Over each episode's four-run cume, skein delivered 3.1 million viewers overall on average and 2.1 million in the 18-49 demo.

"Sunny," which stars Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Kaitlin Olson, centers on the misadventures of four friends who own a bar in Philadelphia.

DeVito joined the cast in the second season as the clingy dad of Dennis (Howerton) and Sweet Dee (Olson), who attempts to recapture his youth by hanging out with his kids. Role reps DeVito's first regular TV series gig since "Taxi."

Should "Sunny" last beyond next year, DeVito has agreed to remain as a cast member through season six. He'll shoot his scenes for the upcoming season over a couple of two- to three-week periods this spring.

FX produces "Sunny." Exec producers are McElhenney, Howerton, Day, Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel and John Fortenberry.

Really glad to read that DeVito is going to stick with it as well. He took the psychoticness to another level.

I love that show. It's one of my favorite shows ever. I'm really happy it's gonna be back for a 3rd season. It's the funniest show on TV right now besides South Park and The Simpsons. I didnt think Danny DeVito was gonna stick with it. He made the show much better last season. I can't wait till season 3 starts.

I really like Devito on the show, but from what I've read on teh net, there's a large contingency of anti-Frank people.

I can't see how people don't like him on there, especially after watching the new episode.

Yes...I was looking for this thread. These 2 episodes plus the preview episode that was put up on Myspace rock. I can say with certainty, although I've only watched 3 episodes, that this season is great. To a previous poster, yes I believe the gang come off as funnier douchebags than the cast of Seinfeld. Another thing to mention...is it me or did this season get wackier? They seem a little less grounded in reality than the previous 2 seasons. Personally I enjoy it. So yeah there's 15 episodes scheduled for this season which is up from 10 last season and 7 in the first. The episode I'm looking forward to "The Gang Solves the North Korea Situation".

Love the show!!!

But, I'm wondering if these guys might be "secret" fans of the bboys...

I noticed a few O&A-ish plugs during the premier tonight.

Mac accusing Dee of giving the baby "Full Blown Aids", the speech was very Virus-like
Dennis, at the environmental rally by the tree, gave a very Jimmy-esque "IS IT?" when Azreal told him what a brave thing his bit was

Few other times I've noticed little tie-ins like that. Could just be wishful thinking, though. The humor is absolutely in the same vein as O&A.

They should definitely be on the show. Getting Devito would be the coup, but getting the three main guys who write it (plus Dee?) would be awesome as well.

They might know it exists but they might just think of it as another stupid comedy. If they were offered any of the gang, they'd probably see the name and act disgusted that anyone would submit such peons be given the honor of an interview. Norton would scream that all that matters on the show is DeVito, spit on the gang and then they'd bring Roland in for a song and dance routine.

I thought when they had Devito phone in, he was promoting the show. If I remember correctly, they didn't sound very interested at all, which really surprised me.

Great show, and looks like it'll be a great season. It's always been a bit on the wacky side. And very Larry David-esque with the big wrap up at the end, ending on a big laugh.
Think Ant would enjoy the episode in the first season when Charlie and Mac find out Dee and Dennis grandfather was a nazi. I alway picture Anthony sitting at home in his boxers, eating cereal, watching tv with a SS hat on.

For 'the aluminum monster vs fatty magoo', was ingrid played by Judy Greer, aka Kitty from Arrested Development? It looked like her, but it wasn't on imdb. If so, she has now been on my favorite two shows, and I love her for that. Indeed it was Judy Greer and I was delighted to see her on this.

I like Judy Greer. I met her a few different times when we were in high school, and really wanted her.....and yet I still never recognize her in ANYTHING until someone else points her out to me.

They need to bring her back as a recurring character, like the McPoyles, or the waitress.

It kinda went under the radar for awhile. I hadn't even heard of it until the promos started for season 2. The good thing was, with season 2, they'd show a new episode, and then rerun one from season 1, so you could see everything.

Night Man, Sneaky and Mean
Spider and Sandman dreams i think i love you
You make me want to cry-a
you make me wanna tye-a
I love you(x5)
Night man

Everynight you come into my room and pin me down with your strong arms and pin me down,
and i try to fight you,
you cum inside me,
you fill me up and i sucumb to the night man...

Just two men sharing the night,
It might seem wrong but it's just right,
It's just two men sharing each other,
It's just two men like loving brothers,
One on top and one on bottom,
One inside and one is out.
One is screaming he's so happy,
The other's screaming a passion to shout...it's the night man

The Feeling so wrong and right man,
The feeling so wrong and right man...

I can't fight you man when you cum inside me and pin me down with your strong hands and I become the night...The passionatly passionate NIGHT MAN....

Yeah i was getting the same issue for about two weeks, then Tivo figured it out I guess, because it doesn't happen.

Like they said, they just have combined two episodes into one slot - smart move on their part, everyone who records it gets both eps, maybe they haven't seen the older one, and they get more addicts to the show.

By the way... This show wins nothing while they hand out emmys to shit like "Grey's Anatomy" on a yearly basis?

That was a great episode last night. Two of my favorite scenes. When Frank firsts slaps Dennis and then they're standing in front of the mirror. Then when Mac is saying I get so hard, I just explode over everyone. The mafia guy's response was classic. "What you talking about your dick"

Dennis' ad in the paper was pretty funny too, especially when Frank points out "no rules".

When Mac first walked in with the track suit on was hilarious also.

"We look like Rerun." (Dee was hot in that outfit though.)

"You can be an undercover cop in the backseat, that way you can wear whatever costume you want."
"Damn it! That's a great idea!"

Charlie's Serpico imitation was great

Mac's "Let's find a guy..."

"God damn it Jack Bauer, you really are the man."

4 The Mare (took me a second to get that)

Season finale next week? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Curb Sunday? IASIP Thursday? South Park probably this week or next. Damn it TV, why must you take what I love?

Only one more episode left...some very funny episodes this with some classic lines.

Read that Sweet D and Mac are actually dating in real life the past year.

While she is not the hottest thing on TV, am I the only one that fantasizes about Sweet D forcing me to allow her to sit on my face wearing nothing but high heels and yelling threats at me?

I like the lead-in to the title of the episode, it always either hysterically confirms or refutes whatever just happened.

The one with Dee dating the retarded guy... They finish the little beginning vignette with her saying "I am NOT dating a retarded person"... cut to black, episode title comes up: "Sweet Dee Is Dating A Retarded Person"

They do it every time.

I am so diappointed it's gone. Another hilarious episode. I am really going to miss these sociopaths. We lost the three best comedies in a single week. It sucks.

Mac: "I think we should just kick him in the dick." (I never realized how much funnier "in the dick" is than "in the balls.")

"He's fueled by vengeance and reinforced by space age technology."

Dee and the waitress were hot in black dresses.

"Why is it so heavy and big? Because it's full of vitamins and shit."

Rickety Cricket's exo-skeleton.

"Dennis Reynolds, I trusted you!"
"Why?"

Sunny gang gets Fox pilot

Un-PC writers from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia get un-PC outer-space comedy pilot order.

The gang is headed to work for Fox. Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Glenn Howerton, the mad geniuses behind FX's over-the-top comedy It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, are beefing up their workload with a new project for a major network.
Giant sword, baby painting: All in a day's work at <em>It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia</em>.

Giant sword, baby painting: All in a day's work at It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Fox TV has ordered a pilot of Boldly Going Nowhere, a single-camera comedy about the day-to-day operations of a spaceship in deep space, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The idea was pitched to the Sunny trio by their assistant, Adam Stein.

"All of us grew up watching Star Trek and other sci-fi series, and they're always about these adventures," McElhenney said. "We thought a great area to explore is what happens between the adventures, how the crew members take care of daily routine stuff on the spaceship."

After reading the pilot script, Fox ordered five more scripts.

"They knocked out a script that completely leapt out of the pile," Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly said. "It has Fox sensibility, it's very character-driven, it's politically incorrect, it's an amazing comedy--high-concept but not a spoof."

However, don't think It's Always Sunny--which has been picked up for a fourth season--will suffer. McElhenney, Day, and Howerton will keep their day jobs and make Sunny their number-one priority. Once Boldly gets its ball rolling, a veteran show runner will be attached to the series.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is expected to return this fall to FX. The comedy follows a group of bar-owning friends and their misadventures (which cover such light-hearted topics as disabilities, racism, abortion, drug addiction, and Nazis) in the City of Brotherly Love.

Well, you can only hope that the success of Sunny combined with Fox looking like assholes with Firefly, Family Guy and Futurama that they'd be inclined to give something a chance.
(I know for everything like those there's an Arrested Development)

Sounds terrific. I love sci-fi humor and you certainly can't go wrong with the Sunny humor.

The single camera thing sounds like it will be low-budget - which is so much fun for a sci-fi show. Love the campiness that ensues.

No it's single camera as opposed to multi camera. Multi camera shows are like Lucky Louie and Seinfeld, where there's multiple cameras pointed at a half a room set. Single cam is like Curb your Enthusiasm, Sunny, The Office, etc. I don't think it has anything to do with budget.
