So I'm thinking about buying the Oxford English Dictionary on CD-rom (20 volume set in meatspace), this is the definitive dictionary of the english language and something I've always wanted to own.

On their website (http://www.oup.co.uk/episbn/0-19-861016-5) I read this:

System requirements

* PC with minimum 200MHz Pentium-class processor; 64 MB RAM; 32-speed CD-ROM drive;
* Windows 95, 98, 98 Se, NT 4, 2000, Me, or XP;
* 1.1 GB hard disk space to run the software from the CD-ROM, 1.7 GB to install the OED to the hard disk (CD validation required every 90 days);
* SVGA monitor set to 800 x 600 pixels, 16-bit setting.

'CD validation required every 90 days'? WTF? What kind of shenanigans are these?

Probably to make sure you haven't gotten a cracked version. Non-trusting asscunts.

since it lets you do a full install on hard disk it forces you to pop in the disk every 3 months as a copy protection mechanism (not a very good system, though).

Why not just get the book?

So just get a crack for it and it would probably fix the reauthorization for it.

The 'book' is a 20 volume set. I may end up getting that as well, it's at a good price right now.
