I figured this would best be suited in the Gaming forum, because it might be a little too obscure for the Music section.
Being the complete geek that I am, I own well upwards of about 50 soundtracks to games, almost half of them being from the Final Fantasy series. There's a ridiculous amount of them out there, and the FF ones always end up getting some sort of remix treatment on other albums, whether it's an orchestration or a piano collection. I have all of them from IV up through X-2 (I guess a 'no homo' is due for all the J-pop shit on the latter). Two albums that everyone MUST hear are the Black Mages albums - heavy metal versions of FF music, done by a band that Nobuo Uematsu, the composer for most of the series, put together himself.
The best standalone soundtrack I can think of is for Dracula X, or for us round-eyes, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Perfect mix of classical, rock, and just plain haunting stuff.
Anyone else here own some game music, or am I ripping off Bill Burr and fuckin' standing here by myself?
The only game soundtrack I ever had was from Killer Instinct. It came with the game for the SNES. It sucked.

both Halo soundtracks were good, God of War's was good, and I loved the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade soundtrack for the PC way back when.

I really like the Chrono Cross and Xenosaga soundtracks. Plus (and I know this isn't technically a soundtrack) I like to listen to the music from the old Megaman games.

the silent hill soundtracks.
Fucking A right Grim. He knows the score because he's helped me find the various ones around the internet.
Silent Hill 1's soundtrack is a lot of mood music they used in the background of the game and the few real songs. So it's well worth it to get the classic Silent Hill theme but kinda lame the rest of the way.
Silent Hill 2's soundtrack was a lot better, using whole songs, but still not 100% in my mind. Still a lot of spooky, moody music that you wouldn't really want to listen to on a iPod or in the car if you ask me.
Silent Hill 3 is when Akira Yamaoka really started to make great music. Silent Hill 2 was a bunt, but Silent Hill 3 was a fucking home run. Great songs performed by a band with a female vocalist and all the other tracks on the CD are whole songs. Instead of making spooky background music for the game, he made whole moody, dark songs and they used those in the game. Silent Hill 3's CD is well worth picking up in my opinion.
Then Silent Hill 4 is just a Grand Slam. Even more well written and performed songs. He basically took the perfect Silent Hill formula and perfected it even further.
I say get 3 and 4 to start, then back track to 2, then 1 just because the earlier ones don't have as many complete songs you'd want to listen to.

For atmosphere, you can't go wrong with the original Metroid.
For music, Road Rash.

most of my favorites have already been mentioned.
best use of pop music - GTA Vice City and San Andreas. nothing like running from cops and jumping ramps when Flock of Seagulls' "And I Ran (So Far Away)" is playing.
best epic orchestratations - the Final Fantasy games. what else can be said about Nubuo Uematsu that hasn't already been stated? he's the John Williams of video game scores.
best creepy music - the Silent Hill games. lots of eerie, atmospheric music and some great songs. strangely enough, i actually came across the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack when i rented the game from Blockbuster and they included it in the rental. i'm guessing that whoever was stocking the games thought it was a second disk to the game so they put it in with the game disk. you know you're a geek when you got excited when you heard the song "You're Not Here" from Silent Hill 3 used in the credits of the Silent Hill movie. :icon_razz

Does anyone remember this game? For Turbograx. One of the extras was that you could go in and listen to all the sound effects, or the different music

say what you will, but no video game song will ever match the Sephiroth song at the end of Final Fantasy 7

Yep, I think I was the only douche sitting in the theater when the credits started rolling who got that "Hey, I recognize that tune!" expression on his face. It was also probably the only time I've expressed some form of happiness when referring to something regarding Silent Hill; just thinking of some of the shit in those games is like recalling raype memories.

it was good to hear them use music from the game in the movie for a change since they usually come up with all-new scores that sound nothing like the game music. hell, it's a rarity to see or hear anything in a video game movie that is taken straight from the game, for that matter. the Marilyn Manson/Marco Beltrami music from the Resident Evil movie was good metal, but did shit for creating a scary atmosphere. and i hated stupid Elliot Goldenthal's music on The Spirits Within and wished they had Uematsu do the score.

Final Fantasy VII was the first soundtrack I ever bought. I actually found it in a local music store (a dying breed) in the import section. I can't believe the CD case is still in top shape - I've had that soundtrack for almost 10 years.
