So I rented Taxi Driver tonight, b/c the boys have mentioned it a few times, and it's apparently one of the top 100 movies ranked by someone somewhere.
But I gotta say I HATED IT.
Basically nothing happened for the first 110 minutes, then the last 4 something kinda happened. Oh, I'm a lonely cabbie.. I'm going insane, I'm going to rid NYC of "filth", bang bang, the end.
I know there was a story and whatnot, but what a bore.
I think I'll be in the minority on this sentiment, but Taxi Driver = Stinks

taxi driver was great. watching a man not acustomed to life in the big city being eaten alive by the lonliness to the point of insanity in such a populated area is some of the best writing ever. I dont think you were watching for the right reasons. Its not an action flick.

They showed Taxi Driver instead of some Swedish shit or some indie film about lesbians?
Sorry you missed it.

come on. The scene where he takes the girl to a porn flick? some of the best cringe cinema ever. the guy is so disconnected with society he cant see that he is a psychopath. I stand by the boys in the fact that this is a cinematic history.
Vietnam vet Travis Bickle is 26, a loner in the mean streets of New York City, slipping slowly into isolation and violent misanthropy. In solving his insomnia by driving a yellow cab on the night shift, he grows increasingly disgusted by the low-lifes that hang out at night: "Someday a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets." His touching attempts to woo Betsy, a Senator's campaign worker, turn sour when he takes her to a porn movie on their first date. He even fails in his attempt to persuade child prostitute Iris to desert her pimp and return to her parents and school. Driven to the edge by powerlessness, he buys four handguns and sets out to assassinate the Senator, heading for the infamy of a 'lone crazed gunman'...New York City cab driver Travis Bickle constantly, almost obsessively, reflects on the ugly corruption of life around him, and becomes increasingly disturbed over his own loneliness and alienation. In nearly every phase of his life, Bickle remains a complete outsider, failing to make emotional contact with anyone. Unable to sleep night after night, Travis haunts the local pornography emporiums to find diversion, and begins desperately thinking about an escape from his depressing existence.

Taxi Driver isn't my favorite movie, but it's above average and the story is so creepy you can't not like that.

Jodie Foster really was young when she shot the movie. I just figured she was like 18 or so playing 15.
But I guess she was really 14 or 15 while filming.
Maybe before I watched it I did think it was more of an "action" film about a crazy cabbie killing people. That might have skewed by viewing

You don't find yourself rooting for DeNiro as the anti hero? He is slowly being overcome by loneliness in the big city but you are rooting for the whole he is doing himself into. Plus it shows the ruggedness of nyc during that era. Just a great movie all around.

It's on again at 10:00 also. It's worth watching just to see Harvey Keitel as the pimp.

Taxi Driver was on tonight, but then again so were Apocalypse Now and The Shining. All at the same time and all on regular TV (so not worth dvr'ing)
I chose the Shining, only to see the best scene cut to hell. (No N cook reference)

"Taxi Driver was a character study of a man who descended into the insanity of the urban plight that surrounded him."
-this was my thesis from a 1990 film class paper...and I stand by it.

I've never seen it, and I watched bits and pieces of it during the first half of the Rutgers game, and I must say I did like what I saw. I think it's on again in a little over an hour, but I'd probably be better off going out and renting it or waiting about a month or so for when I get Netflix and getting it then.
I did get to see a lot of what led up to the scene where he took Betsy to the porn movie on their first date as well as that part and the stuff immediately afterward, but other than that all the stuff I saw was disjointed as I was flipping back and forth from a couple other things.
I really do think you were expecting it to be less of a plot movie that builds to one big moment and more of a bunch of high points that all culminate, Mister Absolutely. That's what disappointed you.
