Damn, another 40 hour game? This shit is getting crazy. I expect it with Final Fantasy, but not Zelda. I'm gonna have to hold off on Wii for probably a year, due to time alone, since I plan on picking up a 360 on Tuesday. I'm barely into FFXII (but loving it) and now I'm buying a whole new system.

Can't wait to see 720p/1080i games on my 61" screen...

Just much tougher dungeons. Never had to use walk through's of any kind on the regular version, finished it fairly quickly. But master quest I got stuck in dungeons multiple times and had to cheat (consult a guide online).

They're the same dungeons, just different layouts and tougher.

how is the controller ?Got my Wii at midnight Sunday morning and have played it for about 20 hours since. The controller is wonderful. Zelda plays very well and it doesn't make your arms hurt. Even the Wii sports isn't bad. It will get your heart rate up, if you do it right. But that's it. On a regular controler my thumbs would hurt after some time, and you don't get that on the Wii.

Ok. I'm unkempt, have 2 days of Wii stubble, and my eyes are dead. I did a little over 8 hours of Zelda today. Had to take a break with some Wii Sports in the middle.

I'm pretty used to the controls. It's hard to explain if you've yet to hold a Wii controller in your hand or use it in a game like Zelda. There's something very satisfying about actually making sword slashes and swirling gestures as you vanquish your foes. For added drama, I suggest standing up (works well for boss fights especially). The entire control scheme for that matter seems so natural that after awhile you pretty much forget that you're even holding two controllers. One thing that does take you out of it though can be the camera. Getting the camera just right can take some work considering we seem to have lost control of it, other than centering it behind Link. That's not to say it's always in a terrible spot, but sometimes when I'm being attacked by those damned flying gorgon things that sound like some sort of brass horn, I'd like to know if wolf-Link is about to make a flying leap attack but also subsequently land 30 stories below in Death Mountain.

Frivolous bitching aside, I've little doubt that Twilight Princess will easily eclipse Ocarina of Time. When you play a Zelda for 8+ hours and you've just reached the second dungeon, well what else is there to say? I think there's 9 main dungeons total, not including every other sub-dungeon. Then there will be the list of sidequests to come. It's not like I've been dawdling. At this point in the game, it doesn't let you do many sidequests. Without spoiling much, I'm expecting there to be a bit of dungeon crawling before more normal gameplay/exploring of Hyrule field can commence. (I've already been to the field but not much to do there just yet.)

Let's see ...what else. The intuitive nature of a lot of puzzles in Ocarina has returned here and probably more so with the aid of the Wiimote. Characters and storyline are vastly improved in their depths. In that area, this is probably the best Zelda (though probably comparable to Majora's Mask).

I can now address 2 areas of complaint that have been popping up across the web about Twilight Princess. You can take what you want from my views on the issues:

1) The speaker on the Wii remote. "It's annoying and low quality." Well for one I don't think it's annoying just yet. In fact I kind of like the added interaction. Though the speaker/sfx are a bit low quality, I don't think it's so bad that it's intolerable. And lastly if it's too loud, the remote's volume can be adjusted via the main Wii menu.

2) The graphics. Twilight Princess is most certainly a Gamecube game. The textures can be a bit muddy which is reminiscent of Ocarina, though certainly still of Gamecube graphics quality. However considering what we've seen put on the Cube, the question remains whether or not the artists/producer have purposefully chosen to make a lot of the game's textures bleed into one another. In the first town for instance, I find the texture work almost impressionistic. Overall what does this mean though? It means that Twilight Princess was designed for the Gamecube's hardware and then was enhanced for the Wii. What this doesn't mean? (And this is important to note.) Twilight Princess's graphics are not in any way reflective on the Wii's graphics potential. In fact both of my other games (Wii Sports and Monkeyball) are noticeably better looking than Twilight Princess. It's not PS3 or 360, but it's definitely above the Gamecube.

I'm expecting Twilight Princess to clock in for me somewhere between 70 and 100 hours. If you're getting a Wii it's pretty much a must, unless of course you dislike the genre. I feel like I'm only at the beginning yet I can already say that every review that you may have read about the game is dead on. The game is not only nearly perfect, but it's also enormous. SPOILER: If you want to get an idea of just how large, when you first start the game take a look at the map screen and zoom all the way out. It will display the overworld map and give you an idea of just how small you really are with respect to the rest of the world. Also keep in mind that You essentially have to go through any square foot of territory twice, once in the light world and once in the dark world. And besides all that you have every single underground map, submap and dungeon.

thrawn42
11-21-2006, 10:46 AM
Upon further thought, the answer to any graphical woes in Twilight Princess seems glaringly obvious. The game was designed to fit onto a Gamecube disc.

I've now come up with another reason everyone should check out Twilight Princess on the Wii,.....

SWORD COMBAT WHILE ON HORSEBACK!

Un-fucking-believable.

SPOILER (but a cool gameplay story none the less): I got up to the part where you're fighting baddies on giant boars in Hyrule Field while chasing that badass orc-like knight (who has kidnapped the little kid Colin and propped him up on a giant stick on the front of his boar). After injuring him and taking out numerous other underlings, it culminates on a bridge riding head on at the knight (as seen in the last pre-launch Zelda trailer, also featured on startup of Twilight Princess). By the time I got to that point I'd been fighting off guys left and right, swinging the wiimote mercilessly. My heart was pounding. I had one quarter of a heart left and that guy had the little kid. He starts charging from one end of the bridge and I pumped up Epona full speed ahead at this guy. I lifted my wiimote into the air and just before we met at the middle I yelled and took a giant slice. Knocked that son of a bitch clear off of his boar and down into the ravine below. Link lifts Epona back on her hind legs in dramatic pose with his sword in the air. FUCKING AWESOME.

Zelda update:

Another excellent 5 hours of Twilight Princess logged. I'm approaching hour 18. I took some time out to explore the world between the second and third dungeons so I could dig up as many secrets as possible. I think I found about 7 heart pieces that way. The "downtime" between dungeons can be some seriously long stretches of time in this game. It's not like popping from one to the next, there's definitely a lot of story/drama in between.

Right now I'm about to get to the Water Temple, but I think I may have to take another turn at exploring the map with these new items (bombs, arrows, etc.) I'm suspicious of the fact that it takes 5 heart pieces to make one heart container in this game. It makes me think that they've loaded the game with tons of heart pieces. There are certainly at least 2 collectables minigames going on at the moment. I've already located a few hookshot spots, but I can't do anything with them at the moment.

Perhaps I should eat food?

Nah. Back into Hyrule.

jesus...hour 18....still as good as they say?

It only gets better. More exploring, more puzzles and most importantly more action. I'm stuck in the middle of a prolonged nighttime horseback fight which involves a lot of fire and bombs that I don't particularly feel like completing at the moment. I took about 7 or 8 shots at it each resulting in various states of endgame. I think the last one where Link slumps over dead on Epona was the last straw. I had to put the remote down. Just getting too stressful.

But before I got engaged in actual story I'd been exploring the various parts of Hyrule Field and Lake Hylia looking for secrets. I found one cave where there were so many rocked off passageways that I actually ran out of bombs out of my 30 bomb bag. I'll have to get back to exploring that after this story segment is concluded.

Hehe. I bet I know which one you couldn't find. It's probably the one that was supposed to be tricky/hidden. I accidently got it first.

I'm closing in on hour 25.

I just finished the water temple. Which if history serves as precedent will probably go down as one of the most complex dungeons. Then again there's another 6 to go. The boss was fricking cool. I ended up fishing in the water temple with some bee larva for bait. Apparently skullfish are not allowed in your record books, but I also caught a 14" Hylian Loach. All told I think I spent between 2-3 hours in the water temple.

Of course nothing can ever be simple. I can't just beat it and get back to exploring Hyrule field with my handy dandy new item. Nooooo. There has to be a new plot twist.

The further I get into this game, the more clear it becomes that this will go down as the best Zelda ever made. Not only is it more complex and lengthy than its predecessors but it has an unprecedented level of polish to it. There are several completed elements in this game that you can plainly see were ideas that Miyamoto and co. just got out or pushed into previous games at the last minute. I'm guessing that extra year really worked out for the development team.

Sounds like you'll most likely pass me by tonight though. I decided to take a break yesterday right after that point.

with better visuals though on the wii

From what I know...the Wii only has slighty better graphics than the cube but with that said I still can't wait to get one. Still got to finish a few games on the cube before I upgrade.

There's a lot of speculation on what the Wii can and can't do. Right now the common idea is that it is a bit more powerful than last gen's Xbox. Make no mistake though, Twilight Princess is a Gamecube game and does not demonstrate Wii's graphical abilities other than to support Widescreen and 480p.

You think so eh? I basically devoted a week to playing Zelda and I even broke my Zelda fast late last night just to:

Wander around Hyrule as the wolf in the light realm to see if I could get into Lake Hylia to talk to a fucking parrot that will only talk to animals. Guess what? After the Water Temple you can't get into Lake Hylia as the wolf yet. I tried every possible route. There goes 1 hour of my time I'll never get back.

lets put this whole "confusion about the power of wii" to rest...well sort of

First thing to note: its not fair to directly compare clock speeds of the Wii and the Xbox because the Wii uses a PowerPC architecture while the Xbox is based on the Pentium 3. Its therefore best to compare Wii to Gamecube because the Wii is basically an extension of the Gamecube's architecture.

If you want to see what Gamecube was capable at its best go look at RE4 of Twilight Princess or Metroid Prime 1/2 screens.

Gamecube ( from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamecube)):
CPU: "Gekko" PowerPC 750CXe 485 MHz
GPU: "Flipper" ATI (ArtX) 162 MHz
RAM: Main: 24MB of 1T-SRAM
Aux: 16MB DRAM

Wii (from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii)...no officially release specs from Nintendo):
CPU: "Broadway" PowerPC 729 MHz
GPU: "Hollywood" ATI 243 MHz
Ram: 24MB 1T-SRAM
64MB GDDR3 RAM

CPU: 50% faster
GPU: 50% faster
RAM: 120% more (although different type)

Therefore, reports of it being Gamecube 1.5 is pretty reasonable power wise.

While Xbox 1 was certainly slightly better graphically than Gamecube..it certainly wasnt 50% better. And while 1.5x of Resident Evil 4 or Twilight Princess is certainly no Gears of War or anything else 360/ps3 could push out, it isnt that shabby either. Lets just hope that developers use those two games as the base for a low-end graphical wii game (when going for realism). Obviously that isnt the case at launch. but i think we can look for some nice things with Metriod, mario and smash bros.

I have found out that I am thinking way too hard to figure these puzzles out. I had to take a 2 day vacation from this game. It took me at least 40 times to beat yeta on the snowboarding race. I came very close to biting the cord that connects the nunchuck to the remote in half. It reminded me of Majora's Mask when you had to race the Gorons. I stomped the shit out of the controller over that.

Well I started up Twilight Princess after another two day break. I'd been trying to find every bug and heart container out there before venturing to the 4th dungeon. Though I actually found quite a bit (and some very well hidden ones) I think I'm tired of the search for now and will go forward.

I just began the game and it opened with me standing on the shores of Lake Hylia in midday. Is it just me or is the massive Lake Hylia with its rippling water and pleasant music, despite its mossy low-res textured cliffs, one of the most gorgeous scenes constructed in a Zelda game?

no, you are definitely correct about the scenery in this game....absolutely amazing..and to think this doesnt show off the full capability of the wii...the next zelda (assuming they'll make another one for the wii) should be flawless

with all these next-gen consoles i find it is the small things that make a difference...like I was climbing up a vine and small leaves were falling off and floating to the ground...nothing amazing but when you put every little touch like this together it makes a world of difference

I had made a hard save before going into the castle for the final boss run, so once I beat it I reloaded that save and started working on side missions. Alot of the side missions and collection shit you cant complete without ALL of the items you get through the dungeons. I just finished the 3rd dungeon. for some reason, it seems that a lot of this plot is just link to the past, and ocarina of time paraphrased. i dont think i have reached the pivotal plot twist that has been in recent zeldas, so im hoping that it just smashes me in the face, that its so good.

that being said, it is fun, and does indeed feel like an adventure, im just praying the plot picks up(hoping im not halfway done either)and matches the gameplay:icon_cry:

I don't think Oblivion is necessarily better than Twilight Princess. It's just different. You can take it from someone who has actually had the opportunity to sit down with Todd Howard and talk about the game while it was being made. The Bethesda team just has a very different focus from that of Nintendo's. Elder Scrolls is meant to be as close as possible to the ultimate in sandbox RPGs. Zelda is meant to be a straight-forward, yet fantastical action adventure game. As a result there's technically less content but it also has the quality of being a more honed piece of work.

Myself I've logged about 120 hours in Oblivion and just over 40 in Twilight Princess so far. The large percentage of time in both of those cases has literally nothing to do with either game's plot. What's pretty evident to me from both experiences is that they stay true to design. Exploring in Oblivion is a much richer experience, while the plot driven parts of Zelda are much stronger than Oblivion's.

How the fuck do I get that stupid horse and carriage thing that the fuckin moblins on the boars keep setting on fire to that town? It takes forever. Just like that motherfucker on the boar that I had to knock his suit off and then I had to joust with him. I really think the gamecube version is gonna be a lot easier. So far I bought 2 strategy guides for this game. I never bought more than 1 strategy guide for any Zelda game. This game is so fuckin hard.

You think like a man. I told my wife the same thing, but she wants to hear the horsey sounds and the swords and all that crap. I don't play the game, but we're all tired of the music.

I think like a man because I am a man.

On another note, did you go to the + key pause menu and the options down on the bottom? There might be an option there for sound or something like that.

I knew you wuz a man. We tried all the options we could find with the + key, nothing to do with sound or music. Maybe I'll just stay upstairs for another 20 or 30 hours and it will all be over.

Games develeoped by NCL usually don't let you turn the music off, which is a shame. It's so fucking annoying waiting for an online game of Mario Kart DS to begin because you can't turn that goddamn music off. The music is good to listen to through an initial playthrough but after awhile you want to just enjoy the sound effects in surround sound (and the arrows whizzing past you in Zelda sounds excellent).

Excite Truck wasn't developed by NCL though. I'm pretty sure they handed it off to someone else, but I forget who exactly.

NST, on the other hand, is usually very good with that stuff. Being able to turn the music off in Metroid Prime: Hunters was a godsend. Having BGM play in an online FPS just sucks.

Unfortunately, compared to other Zeldas, the Twilight Princess soundtrack is just not that good/catchy. Nintendo has been slipping in the music department lately (mostly due to the fact that Koji Kondo has only been slightly involved in newer games).

I just beat the game and the ony thing that bothers me i that it told me how long I played for and it 44 hours. Between this and the already 45+ hours I put into FF 12 and Im only through about half way of that I would say I really need to get out more. :icon_eek: Altogether good game though.

Hey could be worse. I just beat the Temple of Time and i'm on hour 56. One could walk through the game in about 40 hours I'm sure, but I just have to explore every nook of Hyrule looking for secrets. It's a curse. Even if I find something, sometimes I don't have the right tool to proceed and so I have to retrace my steps later on.

And why isn't this rod powered when I leave the Temple of Time!!!!!!!!111 This is fucking bullshit. I want to move all those damned owl statues so I can get more heart containers. I spent all that time getting through the dungeon thinking I'd be getting the power to do just that and bam, it doesn't work outside.

Have patience Thrawn :action-sm

Don't feel too bad CL. I beat the game in about 42 hours, spent another 20 hours tracking down secrets, and have about 22 hours into a "3 hearts only" file (which I just fucked up by picking up a 5th piece in a dungeon and was too tired to do everything over again). Aside from Majora's Mask, it's easily the most I've played a Zelda game.

Don't you think at some point you will be able to move them at some point.:action-sm I only missed 8 pieces of heart and I don't feel like looking for them. I had the 100 arrow quiver and the magic armor. So I had alot of the secrets done.

Magic armor == crap. I didn't believe the first person who said it so I got it.
Just worthless. The worst part about it is that they could have made something useful out of it easily.

All they had to do was not let your rupees run down while you wear it but instead only when you get hit.

I put another 7 hours into Twilight Princess yesterday, putting me at hour 63.
I killed the Sky Temple, got a lot of heart containers, a few more poes and even a few bugs and a new quiver.

As it stands I have 3 heart containers left to get, 11 poes, and 4 bugs.

I've yet to go into the fishing minigame with that much depth, though I do take a chance to fish outside, underground, and in dungeons every chance I get. I'm apparently missing a few different types of fish though.

Question to any of those completists out there about the Rollball minigame in the fishing hut.

I'm up to level 1-7 in the game. Is this the last level? If not, how long does this minigame go on for? Level 1-7 with its 2 dipping sections seems next to impossible as it is.

And here's a warning about the Rollball game. Do not attempt its completion while listening to the E-Lo Attack of the Cocks bit.

Oh and I'd like to go on record and say that Double hookshot rocks fucking hard. I wish they'd introduced it earlier in the game.

For those who think they've beat Zelda and have moved on, you may have missed one of the toughest or at least longest pieces of Twilight Princess.

Seeing as this seems to be pure bonus content I'll put this all in spoiler tags.

I just did a partial run through of a hidden area in Gerudo Desert known as "The Cave of Ordeals." For those of you that have missed this part, it's basically an enormous series of underground chambers where you face off on most of the enemies (sans bosses) in the game. I got pretty far before tapping out on 2 gigundo armor knights. (I really don't know why I didn't use the ball and chain.) After about 10 or so chambers you come upon a fairy queen who is kind of like a way point that allows you to return to the surface. Apparently there are about 50 of these chambers and there are some rewards besides the general accomplishment. Be warned though, if you die you'll have to start all over again.

Check this out:

Twilight Princess completion calculator:

http://www.twilight-calculator.us.tt/

I'm at 72.483333333333% with 65 hours so far.

I have 2 dungeons, the Cave of Ordeals, Roll Goal, Rapid Ride, and Flight Challenge to complete and have to get 3 hearts, 4 bugs, 9 poes, 1 bottle and the Giant wallet.

I am at 85.5%.
I need to do the rapids thing, the roll goal, flight thing, 25 poes, shit load heart pieces.

thrawn42

Geez...I put in another 2 hours including another unsuccessful attempt at finishing the Cave of Ordeals in one go. At least I got farther. (I think I'll fill my bottles with blue potion next time instead of stupid fairies.)

I still can't get past that 7th stage in Roll Goal either. Went through 400 rupees trying to complete it.

I finished the rapid ride and flight challenge, got the giant bomb bag(s) and got another 1.6 hearts.

That only puts me at 75.783333333333%.

Bastards.

I wish I had the extra money to buy a Wii + Zelda :( I have the PS3 that I got the other week after giving up on trying to find a Wii. I would have bought the Wii first but I just couldnt find one.

It sounds like the game is good so far. I'm sure I will get it at the end of the year or so.

Fantastic game, but was it just me or was the final battle against Ganondorf a little anticlimactic?

It sets up nice, Ganondorf and Link square off on Hyrule field, walled off from everyone...then Ganondorf proceeds to fall for the Back Slice EVERY FUCKING TIME! It kind of sucks...the build-up to that point is exceptional, then you slap Ganondorf around like a little bitch.

He wasn't even as bad as one of those armored knights...and you have to fight them 3 at a time sometimes.
