Ooooof....
I have to say, Microsoft knew gaming was going to become more online-centric with the inclusion of the Eternet connector in their Original XBox and then the launch of the Live service... They were prepping for it, and knew where to take it. Sony never seemed to be thinking that way and are now playing catchup to Microsoft, which really makes gaming more social. It's probably because Microsoft was a PC Juggernaut and had a unique knowledge that the Internet was the future.
And it's the little things, like Achievements, GamerCards, etc... Sony just never thought of gaming this way, and now it's showing big time.

I somewhat agree with Kak. MGS4 is the Killer App that should have come out for launch. Resistance: Fall of Man just isn't enough since Gears of War trumps it pretty much. But on the other hand, for those gadget buffs out there, owning a blu-ray player for 600 dollars isn't a bad deal (some dope from CNet said this but it sounded good enough to use).

Unless HD-DVD becomes the norm and Blu-Ray becomes the Beta of the 2000's.
Do you have to pay for Xbox live or only if you use it as your ISP?

XBox live is like $50 a year. My coworker, who plans on getting ps3 is (in part) justifying his decision by the fact that he will be saving $50 for the life of the system, which will add up to be more than the price difference between the 360 and ps3.
Whatever. $50 once every 365 days is a lot easier to swallow than $200 in 1 day. Not to mention that the service is really good, while the ps3 service, according the article, seems to not be so good.
...the [xbox live] service is really good, while the ps3 service, according the article, seems to not be so good...
I didn't really get that feeling from the article. Honestly, the only people who I have heard knock the PS3 online gameplay are xbox owners and fans. I take none of the talk seriously, as sony still has time to improve online service/gameplay to the the level of the 360 and even possibly pass it. As for the article, these bits really got me.
Then, before you are even using the PS3, you have to connect the “wireless” controller to the base unit with a USB cable so they can recognize each other. If you bring your PS3 controller to a friend’s house, you’ll have to plug back in again. The 360’s wireless controllers are always just that, wireless.
If there is one thing one would expect Sony to get perfect, though, it would be music. Wrong. Sure, you can plug in your digital music player and the PS3 will play the tunes. But as soon as you go into a game, the music stops. By contrast, one of the things I’ve always enjoyed most on the Xbox 360 is being able to listen to my own music while playing Pebble Beach or driving my virtual Ferrari. Doesn’t seem too complicated, but the PS3 can’t do it.
In that sense it often feels as if the PlayStation 3 can’t walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. In the PS3’s online store (which feels like a slow Web page) you can access movie trailers and trial versions of new games, but when you actually download the 600-megabyte files, you’ll be stuck watching a progress bar crawl across the screen for 20 or 40 minutes. Astonishingly, you can’t download in the background while you go do something that’s more fun (like play a game). On the Xbox 360, not only are files downloaded seamlessly in the background, but you can also shut off the machine, turn it on later, and the download will resume automatically.
These are things that I really love and found great about the 360. Those alone are enough for me to give the edge to the 360. Sony better fix some of the really simple things, or they are going to go down REAL fast.

The online setup on PS3 is such crap. They push the "LOL ITS FREE" thing, but it doesn't TOUCH 360. Each game has its own buddy lists even though you can have one on the PS3.. And when you get a message in the middle of a game, have fun with that..

Yes, xbox live is free for some things, but if you want to play multiplayer games, you'll need a gold membership.

You can get a free month of gold membership with each gamertag you create, so, theoretically, if you use a new gamertag every month, you could be using XBL gold membership for free. :icon_wink

Doubt it will happen though. Msft was smart in making the online community theirs and theirs alone. Sony, in an effort to reduce production costs since the PS2, has left the onling gaming community to each seperate game developer. There is no incentive for each game developer to make a product seamless with others since they are all competing for the almighty $$$.
