I disagree with a few of these, good discussion fodder though. Whataya think.
American Beauty was a great movie and has no business being on there, same with Field of Dreams. Fantasia, Gump, and Good Will Hunting though are all right on.

I agree with some (Field of Dreams, Chariots of Fire, Monsters Ball).
Some are movies that I think suck anyway (Chicago).
Beautiful Mind deserves to be in its own category because it is a great movie but is pure fiction. The book is completely different.
My two most overrated are Titanic - fucking boring and stupid and Saving Private Ryan - the first 1/2 hour is the best movie ever followed by 2 hours of a Combat episode.

I can only agree with a few. Most are classics that deserve praise for pushing their own limit @ the time, like: 2001, and OZ. I mean I kinda liked em but for the time they were outstanding.
BTW I am a sap Field of Dreams was great.

Clerks! Easy Rider! That's bullshit! Both are great flics. Clerks is a cult classic. Easy Rider was made almost 40 years ago and still holds up today. Maybe it's just me, but I love movies with fucked up endings.
I agree with Good Will Hunting. I thought it was good back then, but I saw it recently and it was terribly boring.

Very good list. Focused mostly on Oscar winners or movies that were drenched with critical praise or cult status. I think it's unfair to go back and crap on Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. Instead I'd agree that Saving Private Ryan should be on the list. For some reason it seems to grow in stature over the years, despite the fact that one of the things they're justifiably bashing these other movies for (contrived, unrealistic plot twists) is what makes that movie so bad.
My favorite movie from the list is Clerks, which I agree is overrated from a critical standpoint, but is still funny as balls.

Don't agree with Wizard of Oz & Gone with the Wind... You can't criticize a movie using 21st Century Glasses. There's a reason those movies were so successful. It's because they were trailblazers. You can't look at it now with what you've seen and say, "Well, these camera angles were pedantic, and this movie had racism, and those special effects stunk, and why was Wizard of Oz so gharish?"
You also can't criticize Clerks for being overrated.... On it's budget, it shouldn't even have been rated. It's just a testament of how well it was written that it did so well and became the cult hit it is.
Field of Dreams is one of the few movies that it's perfectly acceptable for a guy to cry at. Who cares if he travels through time to fetch Moonlight Graham so he can play on this field filled with baseball ghosts... It's all about redemption and having that one last catch with your dad.
Never got 2001. Monster's Ball was all about Halle Berry's tits (which were already revealed in Swordfish, except she showed Oscar-winning tits). Gump is Gump... Should NOT have beaten Shawshank Redemption for Best Picture Oscar. Everything else I was meh on...
Oh, and while reading these, if you wrote these things and felt the need to throw around French terms, you need to die.

This list stinks.
Clerks? Are you fucking kidding me.
Good Will Hunting? Kinda douchey at times, but a great flick.
Forest Gump? I really liked it. (No homo)

I don't agree with American Beauty, Clerks, Forest Gump and Fantasia.
I can understand Wizrd of Oz, considering it really is a terrible movie that only gained a reputation through repetition.

Easy Rider sucked. Just one of them getting killed by an angry southerner was rare enough, but all 3? Fucking ridiculous. They tried too hard to make that movie hippy.

I'll agree with #1 of the list, I still don't know what the big deal with American Beauty is. As for Clerks, I'll stick to my original thoughs about it. I love the movie, but I think its kind of trendy pick. Where its trendy to hate Mallrats, a movie I actually like. Most of the movie on this list, I could really care about.

Clerks. I'm sure it's here since it came up in the search, but it definitely isn't as good as people say.
It's boring, the cinematography sucks because it's just static wide shots with an occasional cutaway like a cat sitting on a random counter, the lines during dialogue are responded to too quickly by inexperienced actors and I don't dig it being black and white.
I understand that black/white stock is cheaper and that's the reason it was shot that way as a start-up independent film, but I only like black/white for certain types of films like film noir or to symbolize things in films such as memory.
Anyway, it was fucking boring and I understand now why it took me so long to get around to seeing the film. I had a feeling all of these years that the acting would be subpar.

Thats not the only reason why he used B&W. He used it because the florescent lights in the Quik Stop give off a green hue when filmed in color. It was more that than the fact that the film was cheaper.
No one hails Clerks as a cinematic masterpiece, everyone knows its terribly acted, they are not professionals. If you got your fucking stupid friends together and made a movie, their acting would suck too. You just wouldnt make a million dollar career out of it.

Well, I'm a little late....deos anyone remember all what was on the list? So far, from what I've seen several deserve to be on the list....others, not so much.
Is my name wishy or washy...yeah.

not that anyone on this board would like it, but i really disliked breakfast at tiffanys.
i could understand calling american beauty overrated as it some of it boils down to a wacky sitcom formula done quirkily. the beauty of clerks is that kevin captured his brand of dialogue heard from wiseass underachieving alienated youth, which is ultimately the foundation of so much pop culture.

American Beauty is one of my all-time favorites. As far as overrated, I have to say “No Country for Old Men” fell flat for me, and I really like the Coen brothers. The theme of fate vs. chance just seemed to get old quick in the film.
