I loved the comic by Garth Ennis. It's got the religious content of Dogma mixed in with the violence and comedy of Pulp Fiction. I'm glad to see Ennis and Dillion are on board the project too. Hopefully, that'll keep the series from getting fucked up. I can't wait to see the protests over this series. Remember the big deal fundamentalists made over Dogma? Preacher makes Dogma look like The Nativity Story

Preacher Series Coming to HBO!

HBO is developing a one-hour series based on the popular 1990s Vertigo comics series, Preacher, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Mark Steven Johnson (upcoming Ghost Rider, Daredevil) is writing the pilot, while Howard Deutch is attached to direct. Johnson and Deutch will executive produce along with Michael De Luca, George Agusto, Chris Bender and JC Spink.

Preacher, which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.

The series was created by Irish-born writer Garth Ennis and British artist Steve Dillon, who will serve as co-executive producers. Ken F. Levin, who represents the duo, also will serve as co-executive producer.

There have been several attempts to bring the comic to the screen, whether big or small, but nothing stuck, says the trade. A movie version, to have been produced by Kevin Smith's View Askew, among others, got to the casting stage, with James Marsden attached.

Go screw. Deadwood and Carnivale were two of my most favorite shows, but this is the best T.V. news in the past 10 years. I cannot wait for this. It is going to be BRILLIANT. Mark my words.

Any word on a Transmet series? I think something rotoscoped, a la A Scanner Darkly, would fit Spider Jerusalem to a tee....

While I feel that cancelling "Deadwood" wasn't the best idea HBO ever had...I'll definitely check this out...love the comic.

Read the comic over the summer and really enjoyed it. I'm glad they're doing a series on it for HBO because it wouldn't work as a movie.

Damn I didn't know they canceled Deadwood.

ding ding ding. anything Mark Steven Johnson is involved in will be mediocre at best. if Garth Ennis isn't directly involved in this, there's little hope of this being anything above that.

Ennis and Dillion are co-executive producers, but knowing Ennis, he'll probably want to be very hands on with the project.

also, what do you guys think of Danny Trejo as the saint of killers?

I think that would be pretty good casting. I was re-reading some of it last night, and I was wondering who could play the three main characters. Got any ideas? (post pictures)

Thomas Jane or Wes Bentley as Custer
I'm not sure who would be good as Tulip
I think norman reedus would be a good choice as Cassidy

I'd also like to see Willem Dafoe as Herr Starr

also, get Norton to play one of the sexual detectives

Haven't read Preacher, but the writers worry me. But if anyone hasn't read Transmetropolitan, get it. I actually just started rereading it this week.
