Fucking Comcast has a monopoly on TV service in our area and they are
jacking up their prices again. I'm looking into sat TV and was wondering
what was a better service, the Dish Network or DirectTV.
Anyone have either of these and what do you think of them?

I love my DirectTV. I get to listen to the B-B-Boys on Channel 879 without having to drag-in my wife's portable XM unit from the car and I also get my NFL Sunday Ticket every Fall/Winter.

I have had DirectTV for close to 15 years now. Just what I am used to. If you are an NFL fan they have Sunday ticket. Also, as mentioned above, you can hear O&A there. The dtv dish is a tad smaller than the Dishnetwork one.

I have DirecTV. One problem is that sometimes I lose signal in a thunderstorm or lots of rain.

ive had direct tv since 94 and love it. i hate the fact that comcast wont allow them to get their channel since i am a big philly sports fan.
the best and cheapest way get directv is to do what i do. my neighbor subscribes to it and he got me the 3 boxes you need to get the channels(i already had the dish up). we split the bill 50-50 and i pay an extra 5 bucks for each box. i could live anywhere in the area and be able to do this. we also split the nfl package, march madness and any movie he or i buy goes to all the boxes so we both can watch. directv allows 6 boxes per household. with the hbo channels and minus the sports only channels i pay 45 a month for 3 tv's. it would be 35 if i had only one tv hooked up. hope this helps.

I have dishnetwork, I love it...you get a shit load of HD channels in 1080i, the price is right too, I pay about $130 a month for 4 rooms, 2 of the rooms are HD I have one in my spare bedroom and one hooked to my computer in the office.
And for that $130 I get every channel they offer, and a 300hr DVR ...if you include my media center computer I have unlimited recording capability, or at least as much as the hard drive on my computer will hold.
I looked at both company's, both are very good, the reason i went with Dish is because Direct-TV wanted me to sign a minimum one year contract, I have no contract with dish. that was a plus to me
If you have a clear path to over Texas and you tune your dish on Directv (which is easy) you will only loose signal in the absolute worst of storms. Even then, its not for long. I moved and got rid of it. Comcast seriously sucks. I really miss it.

If you're into Sports and really into Sports, NHL, NFL, MLB then Directv is the way to go. Dish and Directv have basically the same stuff channel wise except the Sports. Mainly the fucking NFL which has the Sunday Ticket only on Directv and the Super Fan.
I know Dish has the NBA league pass, NCAA Packages, and MLB or at least they used to I dunno now?
Dish also has some good Foreign channel packages if that pertains to you meaning if you're an expatriate maybe, which is one thing I liked because they had the RAI Channel from Italy I used to like to watch that.
Also check out on their webpages on the Local Channels if some are in HD or not, I believe Dish might have a better HD package than Direct?? I'm not sure but the last time I was looking into it I think they did.
Dish or DIrectv isn't bad but the main difference I've seen is Sports, Directv has more of that.

yes, they do claim to have the most, 30 HD channels and as far as the local channels go, I put up a antenna on my roof and have it run into my dish receiver, im in Gulfport MS and I pull in 9 Local HD channels from New orleans to Mobile AL. 14 local in all, over 3 states not bad for a $100 radio shack antenna

I got DirecTV when I moved back in to a comcast only area...Except for the loss of signal in EXTREME rain storms, and even then it is only occasional, I LOVE IT...
I will NEVER go back to cable...
I pay about $45 a month...DirecTV "plus" package (includes O&A channel 879) and 2 receivers...

I have direct TV too and, yes, during severe weather I lose the signal but, that what Tivo is for. Make sure you get the Tivo option. And, enjoy ONA on Direct TV. I really can’t complain.
BTW, the installer told me to spray the dish with PAM, the no stick coating, if a major snow storm was coming in. Never did it, just something to think about.

I love my directv + tivo. We rarely lose the signal except during rain, but we also have a clear view of the sky from our house. It sucks if you watch comcast sportsnet, because we don't get it. If rcn is in your area, i think they have it. The HD looks decent, but not as good as comcasts.

The only thing that would make me drop Direct TV is Verizon's FIOS with the video service. FIBER BABY!

I've had both Dish and DirecTV (currently with DirecTV). I have no complaints about either one, they are each immensely superior to cable. They each have their own version of a DVR with great on screen programming.
I imagine the sports packages will make the difference between which you prefer.
Although another consideration is that Dish allows you to subscribe to the Extasy channel, the greatest porn channel in the history of the universe, which is full porn - including anal and money shots. DirecTV has no money shots or anal.

I've had Directv for a few years now, and the Directv with tivo is great.(I don't think it's available anymore, but they have there own dvr.) I blows cable away.

I have the Fios internet, but apparently the tv doesn’t have msg and would actually cost more.

at home my parents have directv, one hd dvr, another regular dvr, and 3 regular recievers. we got it about 4 years ago and have loved it ever since, plus you can get xm so we pipe the music channels through speakers out on our deck or in the dining room when we're eating dinner. the only problem with directv is that during thunder storms the connection cuts in and out due to the interference...but other than that it's phenomenal.
and ps...comcast just bought adelphia here in virginia where i go to college and i guess i can be in for that same treat

I've had Dish for years and I love it. They're always quick to add the sports channels that cable fights with for months (SNY, NFL network, but not YES for whatever reason). Its an extra $5 for a DVR (like a TiVO) and I only really lose the signal when a snow storm moves the dish.
Customer service though is another story. You'll wait forever to talk to an immigrant who has no idea what they're talking about. So as long as you don't need to deal with them, Dish is great

Even after DTV screwed me with installation issues during a recent move, I still love em. After complaining over those issues, I haven't had to pay a bill in 3 months with all the credits they gave me. That's customer service.
As for signal issues, it only goes out 3 or 4 times a year for 5 minutes at the most due to severe thunder or snow storms. For snow, PAM does work if you are expecting a blizzard, but if you have a DVR box, it doesn't really matter. If you loose a signal, just turn on a recording of South Park. Cablevision's signal would go out a lot more often and their version of a DVR sucks ass.
If you get DTV, ask one of us to refer you. You'll save alot more on a basic package and one of us gets a deal too.
No idea about how good Dish is, but they are facing lawsuits over the basic channels they broadcast and depending on where you live, you could be affected. Granted alot of it is due to DTV leading the lawsuit against Dish, but look into it before deciding on Dish. PM me and I can give you a few good articles about the lawsuit.

A deal was finalized last month and MSG will be added in the next two weeks. A couple more weeks for MSG HD though. Definitely make the switch

Directv.... for a fkn long time... Only difference is the dish. I have one dish for 3 tivos with 6 lines running into the house. I do see 2 dishes for Dishnet.
Also Directv is partner with XM , Dishnet is partner with hoo-hoo...

Yes but even though Dish Network carries Sirius Channels it does not carry Hoo-Hoo's channel. Direct TV is still the better choice. My family has been with Dish Network for the last 10 years and we're switching to FIOS next week. The only reason why we cant switch to Direct Tv is because they don't carry RAI (Italian). If FIOS isn't available in your are, definitely go with Direct TV... fuck cable, and fuck Dish Network.

I've had both. I have "digital" cable now, but if I went back to satellite it would be Direct TV. Dish Network felt like Wal-Mart while DirectTV felt more like Macy's.
Why did I go back to cable? Dish Network was pissing me off over the local networks. Because I live 1 mile west of the county line I was being forced to watch local networks out of the Moline, IL and Davenport, IA. If my address was 1 inch east of the county line, I would have gotten the locals out of Chicago. Dish wouldn't budge, telling me I was out of the Chicago market and it would be illegal. The difference is Cletus and Ellie Sue giving me the farm reports in the morning vs. that fine ass lump of brown sugar Tameron Hall telling me there were 5 shootings on the south side. DirectTV would have given me the same bullshit too. With cable I get Chicago and the hicks.
I do miss the picture on satellite though. Much better than "digital cable".

Thinking about getting rid of Comcast, too.
Only problem is I use OnDemand a lot.
I guess I'll just have to go aout and spend the extra money on a tivo????

I use Dish, though I HATE their customer service.
We signed up to get a special deal with them and they never told us that we would have to save our first bill to send it in to get our sign up deal, and gift. (i-pod shuffle)
After months of calling in and complaining, they finally lowered the price to what it was supposed to be 30.00, instead of paying 60. However, they weren't budging on giving us credit for all these past months of paying. It took us saying "we're going with Direct TV" before they would do anything.
Whatever you sign with, make sure that you are getting a deal. There are plenty of them out there, but make sure you save EVERYTHING and read the fine print. Thosefuckers will try their hardest to get one over on you, regardless of what company it is.
The DVR kicks ass. We only use 1 receiver for 2 televisions, and get 100 hours of DVR. We'd like ot get another box, so we can record more, but this will do fine. I don't have HD, but use SD instead, and you could even tell the difference when I hooked up that cord.
Good luck bro
