Hahaha, this has been a staple since I was wee little lad.

Back in the day, early 1970s, I remember being allowed to stay up late to watch the 10 PM news on Christmas Eve. Back then there was always a brief segment on NORAD granting Santa permission to enter U.S. airspace, complete with a recording of the communication exchange between a air controller and Mr. Clause. Nice memory, I haven't thought of it in decades.

The local radio station would break in with updates all day..I remember hearing it, then the news that Smokey the Bear had died.
