I would say sponsorship... Comedy Central runs "Secret Stash" movies late night on the weekends... uncensored versions of movies and comedy concerts... South Park drops asshole all the time... I think it's by choice not by FCC reguations... IMO

Yeah, The FCC ONLY regulates broadcast airwaves, that is content that they issue liscences for, and can be picked up with a tv/radio using antenna only. The cable stations decide entirely on their own to censor themselves b/c we cannot handle an f-bomb here or a boobie there...Look at FX they are at the forefront of uncensored cable (non-premium) with Nip/Tuck, The Shield, Rescue Me...etc they even said Cunt on rescue me!

ive heard fuck on mtv several times, even boadcast TV has much looser regs at night, years ago i remember watching "1941" on WPVI uncensored at like 2am.

Networks lease airtime from the government. In other words, the frequency on which WNBC or WNYW here in NYC operate on, isn't owned by the station. That's why the FCC has to regulate content -- it's their air.

In exchange for the free use of the frequency, the networks have to sometimes air educational/public service content.

Cable slots and bandwidth, etc, is owned by the cable companies. The only thing the FCC can regulate is the price. (Although there are a few rules about things like "equal time" for political candidates, and rules about advertising tobacco.)

However, in this massively politically-correct society, you can be sure the FCC will try to regulate every damn word said on cable.
