He's Mexican by birth - he's descended from a Hungarian Jew and Spanish (as in Spain). This is like being White African as opposed to Black African. When we hear African, we usually assume Black, hence the term African-American, even though there are many non-black Africans. When we hear Mexican, we assume it refers to those descended from indigenous populations, not European immigrants.

He's half Mexican, but has very little indigenous blood which is what people common associate with "Mexicans". The truth is, there is a variety of them, but the European ones usually stay put or you meet them and don't know it because they aren't short, dark, fat and sweaty.
