"I'm a big supporter of independent music" - Earl Douglas
Opening music of 2007:
Tues 1/2 - James Brown
Wed 1/3 - White Stripes
Thurs 1/4 - Blur
Fri 1/6 - Some Funk song I'm not familiar with
Mon 1/8 - David Bowie
I'm not saying turn 12:00-12:05 on 202 to XMU, but if earl's such a supporter of independent music.. how about every once in a while, play something from recent memory that wasn't a Radio hit?
Earl, If you need some help, here are a couple of songs from Independent bands that maybe wouldnt make a terrible opening:
The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
Malajube - Pate Filo
Cursive - Dorthy at Forty
Broken Social Scene - 7/4 Shoreline
Tapes N Tapes - Just Drums
..just maybe save the classic rock for the 3-4 days a week you're mourning the anniversary of some big rock death.

Alright gonna run and grab lunch, back in a few.
Either you posted this in the wrong thread or that is the longest name for a independent band that I have ever heard
<mod edit>: Yep, I did, BALEETED.

Earl is all about the little guy. He brags about all the bands off Epic Records, Sony Records, Warner Bros., you know all those little labels.

At least two of the dates mentioned had somewhat of a significance regarding what was played (Bowie/J.B.). You don't start anything with something unknown- bands don't do it live. People just get confused. This isn't "'Earl Douglas plays shit only stupid college kids know', on XM 202".

The point is that Earl proclaimed that he's a supporter of independent music. When Ron mentioned that he should start throwing some independent bands into the opener every once in a while, he said he'd start.
I understand that there are siginifigant times to play a certain artist. I also understand that he shouldnt play all unknown bands. But how about every once in a while, play something new that wasn't on a TV show the night before?
(Also, playing something people know so it doesen't confuse them isn't really the style of the R&F show anyway)
If earl has no problem playing a deep cut from some 1973 album, why not something just as obscure that was made after the Reagan administration. I just threw out a few songs "only stupid college kids know" as a suggestion.. There's many other ways for Earl to go with it.

They're not quite independent, but virtually unknown in the States - Earl played Arctic Monkeys "I Bet You Look GOod on the Dancefloor" a few weeks back and I thought that was cool, albeit he played their big mainstream hit in the UK that I'm sick of at this point. He should have played their new big mainstream hit in the UK that I'll never get tired of, "Leave Before the Lights Come On."
Oh, my point is, everytime he plays something off beat that Ron's not familiar with and doesn't like, he mentions it as he did with Arctic Monkeys. Earl is torn because Ron told him to play indy stuff and has commented when he doesn't like some of the little-known stuff Earl chooses. As the ultimate yes-man, Earl is having trouble walking that line.

Anyone notice the passive/aggressive mention of this thread on the show today? Dave lashes out at those he doesn't like with his board gossip.

I dont think dave was going after the board. He mentioned it because it was a chance to bash something Earl does. Dave will take any chance to show someone criticizing earl.

I don't know why, but I really can't stand Earl.

This has nothing to do with Earl not supporting independent music. He's just lazy, that's all. Lazy.

That music on Wednesday's show was the STUPIDEST SHIT EVER! I fell asleep to it! I went back and hit the rewind to hear it, and it sucked! This proves that Earl is not good at his job. At least Dave makes an effort. It may not be gold, but at least he tries. Earl's selections sounded like what is at the bottom of a bargain bin in the store. Just grab a handful and play them. SAVE DAVE!

The truth.
"Yeah, we can definetly do that"
Holy Fuck, I know Rons been calling him out on saying that lately but fuck he says that about every god damn thing.
I used to love Earl, now I can't stand him "Yeah, we can definetly do that"
"No, no.." "Yeah, No"
He's worthless. Today he'd better open with some obscure shit indy band.

does "indie bands" include unsigned bands?
or is it strickly the garage/college rock sound only? cuz my band doesn't sound like that, but we are unsigned.

It really means anyone who isn't on a major label. It's just become a genre that includes "college rock" bands, some of who are on major labels now.
I'd just like to see earl play something new that isn't by a known band. I'm sure he's been pressured into doing it today (friday), but come next week, I'm sure its right back to theWNEW playlist.
at least dave tries, even if it is too hard most of the time.

This is the problem I have. Earl is a producer. He's not an on air guy. I don't know why a producer has to be good radio.
Miss Ron & Fez when it wasn't Ron & Fez & Dave and Friends...
