I wonder if that means one can request fresh strawbbbburrrys or fresh bluebbbburrrryys?

It's more of a restaurant than a bar. There's a bar in the front, but it's mostly a restaurant and a very good one at that. I honestly would go there even if it weren't affiliated with the show. I think it's THAT good. The combination of things is amazing (salmon and raspberry sauce) yet has something for everyone...Dont' be afraid go down there!!

Good enough for me! I'll take the gf and some friends there and see how it goes. Maybe I'll bring my laptop and hit up paltalk :fight6:
I tend to shy away from the bar-type scenes only because I'm not a bar goer myself. Since this is a restaurant first and it's recommended, I'll definitely hit it, along with giving some support.

I'm not really a bar person either, Sknight, so I understand. Believe me it's not like a sports bar or a crazy place. It's a really nice neighborhood restaurant with really good food. I would love to go down there for lunch one of these days and check out all the cute little shops and things in the village around there too..Alright now I'm getting too girly, punching out LOL

Huntington village is very nice. I spend a lot of time there. Even if you don't go to FH's, there are many good places for food, from Vincent's for a plain pizza, Rosa's for fancy, Dragon's Gate is excellent for Chinese, and for a bit of an upscale sit down deli that's actually in a nice environment, Renaissance Gourmet is excellent. I usually head down to the beach afterward, or Nino's in Oyster Bay.
Book Revue is a cool place as well.

I always wanted to try that little tea shop a few doors down from F.H. Riley's. It's funny, years ago I went to a store with my family called Just Kids Nostalgia (filled with old toys, movie posters, etc we're big collectors in my family LOL) , and only recently realized it was right near F.H. Riley's. It had been YEARS since I had been to that store and I was taking a cab back to the LIRR station one night from Riley's and we passed it going around the corner and I thought that was kinda cool :)

Food is great at Rileys.
some things are on the expensive side, but for the most part pretty average for the area. The waitstaff and bartenders are all cool and very nice. the only problem I see with the place is the competition in the area. I have been there on a Thursday or Friday night and there is no one there except a few stragglers at the bar and 1 or 2 tables of people eating. It seemed busier last winter and spring than it has been since the summer and fall and even the holiday season. its a shame because in order to survive in an upscale area like this, you need to be busy ALOT!! so all pests should collect your cans and bottles and go to coinstar and get to Rileys for some good food and watch the bartenders boobs while she serves drinks.

I've also been there on a weeknight where it's been near empty. I agree it may be the competition in the area, but you know the restaurant business surely isn't what it used to be. My mom's friend owns a restaurant in Queens, NY and years ago, when the woman's father owned it, it was a happening neighborhood spot, more a bar/restaurant. They still have a bar, but they've made it more upscale which is fine, the food is better than ever, but the place used to be open late, and now the kitchen closes around 11 and the place is closed by 1 AM the latest. So it could be the times...dunno

LI Economy sucks in general!!!?!?!?
gimme some of what you're smoking. There is so much disposable income on the North Shore its disgusting. in the case of Rileys, or the restaurant scene in Huntington, go to Besito, Blue Honu, Prime or any other high end place on any given night and tell me about the economy sucking. My friend owns SalD's in huntington and they are busy every night and their location sux. same for Piccolo's, Mill Pond and many others. I think Riley's just hasn't found it's client base or figured out where it fits in. They also need a point man (Brett) to be the face of the place. A small restaurant like that can get a huge regular, neighborhood crowd if people feel like they are at home. Like Norm at Cheers. IMHO that means that the owner or a trusted manager should meet and greet everyone in the place personally and work the crowd nightly.
the food is great and the place is beautiful, they just need a slight boost to hit the big time.

Every supermarket chain on LI is operating at minimal to zero profits to losses. They're all banking on trying to outlast the other, then consolidate and take over all of the business. Unfortunately, there isn't enough business to go around because it's being spread too thin.
Entenmann's is another example.
High taxes, poor transport being more reasons. High energy costs. The list is endless. Simply because there's a lot of money in the residents and things are nice looking, that doesn't mean everything is ok. Infrastructure sucks out here, as does the structure of business overall. LI is a hole of an economy and a lot of it is based in the analysts seeing the demographics and thinking a surefire hit is to open businesses here for the wealthy.

Sknight, the supermarket business is known for having low profit margins. Are there any big box retailers (Target, Walmart, Costco) that could also be taking business away from them?
You can't compare restaurants to supermarkets. If there's that much disposable income on LI, people are going to eat out way more than cooking at home, which requires trips to the supermarkets.

Huh? Supermarkets margins? public transport? What are you talking about? The people that would frequent a restaurant like this care about neither. Huntington Village and Huntington Bay are among the wealthier areas on Long Island. Many (most?) of the wealthy people in Huntington work in the city. They make city wages and do not balk at paying city prices for a nice meal. I think you are out of your element speaking about consolidation in the supermarket business and thinking it applies to restaurants. When is the last time restaurants merged?
I went to this joint once last fall. I thought it was OK, but I have been to many better restaurants in this price range. I know that one meal does not make a restaurant and that to give a real review I should try at least 5 entrées on the menu, but my initial impression was that it was nothing special. And that website is a real joke.

Holy Crap.....
There is absolutely no place in the world that is capable of pleasing everybody. I do not care how good the restaurant/bar is. There is always going to be a counter point whether it be negative or positive. As a business owner, and yes I do own it for real, you have to make the best of what you have. I know this may be obvious to many of you guys but I have not even been open for a solid year yet. I am learning as I go about the ups and downs of this town. As far as the references to other local "Hot Spots" in the area... Almost all mentioned are high end establishment whom charge a heck of a lot more then I do on all items. The good thing about those places is they have backing in the millions to get there projects off of the ground. "Prime" alone has put into their establishment 10's of millions of dollars to get it up and running and rumor has it it was over 3 times that estimate because of foundation issues. They do how ever happen to own many more high end establishments on Long Island and are very well known. Same goes for Blue Honu, Besito and such. They are palces that people like to be "scene at". I find it odd that I am compared to these places whom also have the ability to spend in the high 1,000's each year/month on advertisement and promotions. Their backers have endless amounts of cash and trust me...that really does help in this business. I actually opened up in the hole and finally just got nearly caught up a year later. Most places including Sal D's have been around for many years and are established. One is a low end type of Italian who's prices most likely can not be matched when you are paying nearly double what they are for rent. ALL PLACES IN THIS VILLAGE HAVE BEEN SLOW at one point this winter. Anyone whom says different is lying. I sure have been but I also have been busy when other places are closing for the night. I know people working in almost every restaurant mentioned so my knowledge comes straight from the "well". If I owned the building and payed rent to myself then prices could be different but I don't. My beer menu ranges from $2.50 to $9.50 ber btl/can/or Draft. 11 to close Thursday thru Saturday Miller Light Drafts are $3 and my bar menu is cheaper then most places in town. That is right on line and in some cases cheaper then most places around here that I feel I am on the same level with. I happen to know two "hole in the Wall" places that charge even higher then I do and have a regular cover charge at the door. Last night Thursday I was open to 3am while the rest of town was shut down and I was expecting to be dead. You just never know. When my place is two years old and I am on my feet then compare me to other places whom are packed "every night". For now I will continue to push on, pay my debt and hope there is $ left for gas so I can make it to Islip & see my girl. My bro is a millionaire I am not. I am a struggling restaurant owner trying to make it in a very competitive town.
Lost Boys are playing tonight and like always there is never a cover charge. We also have $2.50 Natural Light cans up to $9.50 Arrogant Bastards in the bottle. Hope to see you guys and thanks for your support and input. I truly feel I would have not made it through this year if it was not for most of your guys support. Web-site is getting there. If it sucks it sucks. It is informative and that is all I needed from it.
Anyone heading this way tonight , no matter what your opinion is on this matter, please mention this forum to me and I will give 1on1 beers all night.

Very good points, tweezer. Lots of those places there aren't family businesses, but are corporations. You go to those places and you can tell sometimes tell where the food is sourced from. Then you have places nearby where the yuppies just want to be seen outside hanging out, looking faux-elite. I guess this is their idea of fun.
Not a single person I've met has said bad things about FH's food and the environment. I have yet to head there, but will soon with some wackbaggers for a casual, non-OandA night.

Brett,
You're right you cant' please everyone all the time, there's always going to be naysayers and picky pete's about SOMETHING but you shouldn't have to defend your business to some of these people complaining. Long Island is expensive: anyone living there and working there knows that and to get a business off the ground in GENERAL isn't easy but especially in an expensive, competitive area, even harder.
My family and I are fellow Long Islanders, we know lots of people who are in or have been in the restaurant business. My mom's friend owns a restaurant that she inherited from HER father so that was no easy task, my father's band mate once owned a pizza parlor on Long Island that they had to fold because the costs were just too high and the business just wasn't what they expected, etc.
I've said it before on here and I'll say it again and this isn't to kiss ass because you're Opie's brother and all that jazz. I GENUINELY enjoy F.H. Riley's (unfortunately can't make it out there tonight though) and I would go there even if it weren't affiliated with the show. It's a great restaurant, you and your staff serve amazing food, are courteous, try to accommodate everyone, and work hard. I have nothing but nice things to say about the place so keep up the great job.
Holy Crap.....

Thanks again
Brett

Melissa,
I'm putting together a thing soon with a few wackbaggers.
As far as pleasing everyone, that only works for the short term when a business tries to compromise to please just about everyone. The best thing is to do one thing and do it right.

sknight: Not one of the restaurants mentioned above are corporate owned. Besito, and blue Honu are family owned by the Tunney family. and Prime is owned by one person. he happens to be worth more than most small countries, but it is privately owned nonetheless.
Those places are scene type places which makes my point exactly, there is no comparison between them and Rileys. Rileys will need to take time to build a Local regualr crowd. that will mean being consistent and staying in business while the people find it and become regulars. I still think they need a point man in there that meets and greets everyone and keeps his finger on the crowds needs. I hate to say it, but Brett doesn't really do that. He needs to hire a manager who is super personable or get out there himself. Case in point: just about every successful restaurant or bar, currently or in the past, in Huntington always has had a guy that knows everyone. Faz, Pat Meehan, Jack at Christophers, Fat Larry, Fast Eddie, Dave Tunney, Dean at Piccolo etc. anyone who knows the bar/restaurant scene in Huntington knows I am right.
Rileys has the potential to be a legendary Local spot...just needs some TLC.
