If you drink too much water, you can die. You basically dilute yourself to death. (I do not know if that is the case here).

At Chico State which is only about 1.5 hours north, a frat boy did the same thing and died. You would think the Sacramento station would take that into consideration since it was a huge story in the area. I'll have to get up and listen on Monday to see what they say about the incident. Bye the way, the show consist of two fagots and a hole.

It's called hyponatremia. Too much hydration of the body. Sodium levels become too low. Like that kid at Chico State University. The more rapidly the body becomes hydrated, the quicker the bodies sodium level falls through dilution. Which also hastens the onset of life threatening symptoms. At first a person will become lethargic and confused. As it becomes more severe it will escalate to muscle twitching and seizures. Stupor, coma, and death may follow.

Heard a story as a teen about people in a rehab that moved their beds into the bathroom cause they learned that they could get drunk from constantly drinking water. Always thought it was a myth.

What I have heard is that if you drink too much water, the body doesn't know where to put it and then seeps into your blood stream. The heart can't take the volume of liquid (blood plus the water) it has too pump, is over worked and the result is heart failure. I've not heard of sodium levels becoming too low (which would be a side effect of drinking too much water, but I'm leaning toward the overworked heart theory).

But then again, I'm not a doctor... I just play one of the messageboards.

Maybe Professor Anthony can shed some light on the subject.

MrBogey

uND is right. Without the proper sodium levels the nervous system begins to fail.

Whenever they run those "Ecstacy Kills" drug ads 99.9% of it is from kids who are too hot so they drink too much water to cool their body down.

Much like how a ton of broccolli can make you fat, a ton of anything can kill you. Your body is a giant chemical reaction and any imbalance has an effect.

This is exactly one case. In renally impaired patients, this could cause circulatory congestion, even a pulmonary edema (more factors involved).

Uneeddiscipline is somewhat on track. In response to stretch, cardiac myocytes will also secrete atrial natrurietic peptide to assist in removing sodium and extracellular fluid. This effect counteracts those of the renin-angiotensin axis (serves to retain water and salt).

Incidentally, the is also a Brain Natrurietic Peptide. One can go too far with water in 100% of the cases, but to die from it can indicate some underlying disorders.

Funny...At Plattsburgh in October of 2003, there was a frat incident similar to this. Well, there was this kid who wanted to be in a frat and he was hazed. The frat brothers made this kid drink five gallons of water. He didn't make it past two. The water dehydrated him and he had to get his tummy pumped. It was too late. The water intake had already stopped his heart and he died that night. The frat brothers were never charged but rather kicked off campus.

The way I figure it, OnA were lucky on this one, though they won't see it that way. What if the ball bag in bee jar guy had died of a heart attack, or someone choked to death puking up egg nog? Or some chick had a seizure while rotting meat was poured on her while she squatted in a 50 gallon drum? Now the legal department is going to wave this incident around every time they propose something similar, and at least it won't be OnA that kills the next one. Which is good, in a sense, because that would have been true radio death. We're talking permanent, daddyo. "Law and Order" episode stuff.

SO FIRED (http://endonline.com/index_message.php)

All of you are probably aware of the tragic death of a contestant, Jennifer Strange, following her participation in a contest on the Morning Rave last Friday.

First and foremost, our thoughts and sympathies go out to Jennifer's family and loved ones.

I also want to assure you that the circumstances regarding this matter are being examined as thoroughly as possible. We are doing everything we can to deal with this difficult situation in a manner that is both respectful and responsible. In the interim, the Morning Rave is off the air indefinitely.

Thank you.

Radio station fires 10 in wake of contestant's death
By Christina Jewett - Bee Staff Writer
Published 1:41 pm PST Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Ten employees of The End (KDND, 107.9 FM) were fired Tuesday and the "Morning Rave" morning radio show has been cancelled in wake of a water-drinking contest Friday that left a Rancho Cordova woman ill hours before she died, apparently of water intoxication.

Jennifer Lea Strange, 28, drank one and three-quarters of a gallon of water - according to another contestant - Friday morning during a "Hold your Wee for a Wii" contest in which competitors had to drink as much water as they could without going to the bathroom for a Nintendo game system.

Strange is a mother of three childrens, ages 11 months, 3 and 10. Her family has maintained public silence about the death, save for a prepared statement attesting to Strange's kindness and dedication as a mother.

Monday afternoon, a spokesman for the radio station said that the station had suspended the morning show pending an internal investigation.

The show's disc jockeys - who go by the names Trish, Maney and Lukas - and morning personalities Carter and Fester would not be heard on the radio until the investigation ended, the station said. A spokesman said Tuesday that he could not reveal which 10 employees had been dismissed. However, the "Morning Rave" link on the station's Web site was missing Tuesday afternoon. The myspace.com social networking site for the station no longer listed morning DJs Trish, Lukas or Maney as its "friends."

Coroner's officials said Saturday that Strange's autopsy revealed no life-threatening medical conditions and appeared "consistent with a water intoxication death." It added, however, "the final cause of death will not be available for several months."

Talk about hosing shit down....
