Devils in Six
I like my Devils chances against Ottawa, I believe the home ice will help establish consistency, as well as having history and the confidence of the season series in our favor. Parise, Gomez, Elias, and Gionta are all on fire at the right time. It will be a close, ridiculously intense series. Marty will be Marty, outstanding. The EGG line needs to play confident and move the puck, get pressure on Emery.
Sabres in Seven
The Sabres will roll four insane lines that the Rangers may have trouble containing, even with the stellar showing Lundqvist has had and will probably have in this series. I say Henrik steals two games, with some heroics from Shanahan. Avery is the best instigator in the league, but compared to having just Thachuk/Kovalchuk to deal with, he will have is hands full with the Buffalo roster.
Sharks in Five
I think SJ's roster has too many weapons for Detroit to deal with. The Wings will experience a much more balanced attack from SJ than they dealt with from the Sea of Red.
Canucks in Seven
Luongo steals the show, willing the Canucks to win a memorable game 7 in overtime at Honda Center.

One reason to love the CBC... no 7-second delay in their broadcasts (unless Don Cherry is on). The John Tortorella vs Larry Brooks post-game scrum after game 5 of NJ/TB, broadcasted uncensored coast to coast on Canadian television (in HD no less) with nary a peep from anyone who felt "offended" by the clip.

Well like Faz, I went 7-1 in the 1st Round, 3 in the right amount of games. Was a Game 7 from Dallas away from going 8-0. On to the 2nd Round, I hope I get 1 wrong again in this round.

EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS
#1 BUFFALO SABRES vs. #6 NEW YORK RANGERS
The Rangers are the talk of the league after their 1st round dismantling of the Thrashers, while the Sabres didn't play their best hockey, yet still got rid of the Islanders without too much of a hassle. Both teams are in for a lot tougher series this time around. Should be a very physical series that could get nasty at times. The Rangers have the slight edge in Goaltending with Henrik Lundqvist and Lundqvist will have to be solid for the Rangers to advance. Ryan Miller is also capable of stealing a game or two for Buffalo. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers come out in Game 1 after a week off. Although the Rangers made their series with Atlanta look easy, the Thrashers were still in every game except for the 7-0 massacre in Game 3, and the Thrashers were absolutely awful in that series. That could be a bad sign for the Rangers because Buffalo will come out with a lot more intensity and firepower than Atlanta did. I expect this series to be very evenly played. Should be good exciting hockey. I am going to take Buffalo because they are deeper, but I would not be shocked at all if the Rangers pull this one out. And if I get one prediction wrong in this round, let this be it.
PREDICTION: Sabres in 6

#2 NEW JERSEY DEVILS vs. #4 OTTAWA SENATORS
The Devils escaped with their lives against Tampa Bay. Scott Gomez's overtime goal in Game 4 totally swinged the momentum in that series and Tampa Bay could not recover. Tampa Bay throws out 1 powerful line and not much else. Ottawa is a lot deeper than that and are going to give the Devils a lot more fits. Ottawa took down a very good but inexperienced Penguins team in quick fashion and are looking like a team that is finally ready to make a Stanley Cup run. The key for the Senators is Ray Emery and is he ready to step up and play on the same level as his counterpart Brodeur. Anytime the Devils go into a series with Brodeur in nets they always have a chance. But right now I think they are running into a team that's hot and is on a mission. The Devils had a tough time stopping LeCavalier, St. Louis and Richards, it should be the same way against the likes of Heatley, Alfredsson and Spezza. I think the Devils have the potential to make this series more interesting, but Ottawa is just too tough.
PREDICTION: Senators in 5

WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS
#1 DETROIT REDWINGS vs. #5 SAN JOSE SHARKS
With the possible exception of the Rangers, I don't think anybody was as impressive in their 1st round series as the Sharks were. For the 2nd straight year they made quick work of the Predators in the 1st Round. Nashville was a team that was favored by many during the season to be competing for the Cup. The Redwings had a tail of two different series' against Calgary. They dominated the Flames at home. Yet needed a double overtime winner in Game 6 to win their only game in Calgary. Calgary was not a very good team who played awful down the stretch of the season. If Detroit was on their game they should have made much easier work of the Flames in that series. San Jose is a whole lot better than Calgary and are going to give the Wings fits. Dominik Hasek is nowhere near the likes of his old self and the he is going to have headaches from the likes of Thornton, Cheechoo and Marleau. The Wings will have to play a whole lot better in this series to advance and I don't think it is likely at all.
PREDICTION: Sharks in 6

#2 ANAHEIM DUCKS vs. #3 VANCOUVER CANUCKS
Vancouver escaped and avoided blowing a 3-1 series lead in their 1st round series against Dallas. Now 48 hours later after exhaling from that series, they are back at it again. The Ducks easily dismantled of Minnesota despite not having Jean-Sebastien Giguere for the first 3 games. Anaheim's Game 4 loss to the Wild may have been the best thing to happen to them. It allowed Giguere a chance to come back into the lineup in Game 5 and takeover the starting spot he deserves. Had backup Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov swept that series against Minnesota, it would have been very hard for him to be benched for the upcoming series. Bryzgalov had playoff magic last year off the bunch, that would have been a tall task to expect again. Giguere has history of Playoff success and is capable of taking the Ducks to the Finals again. Roberto Luongo certainly is capable of that too, but Vancouver's lack of offense is going to catch up to them in this series. 2 goals a game is not going to cut it in this series, I don't care if Luongo is in nets. The short rest for the Canucks is going to hurt as well and I see the Ducks having another easy series.
PREDICTION: Ducks in 5

Holmstrom is out for tonight, dammit.

Detroit -- Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom has an eye injury that will sideline him tonight when Detroit opens its second-round National Hockey League playoff series against the San Jose Sharks.

"The doctors want no blood on his eye before he plays," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said yesterday. "It's a blow because he scored 30 goals this season, and he's one of our key players. But we expect to get him back at some point in the series, and that's good news for us and him."

Calgary Flames forward Craig Conroy hit Holmstrom with his stick at 6 minutes 44 seconds of overtime in Detroit's series-winning victory over the Flames on Sunday. The 34-year-old left winger had 30 goals and 22 assists during the regular season for the Wings.

Hate to break this to you, but you were still the #1 seed in the West therefore yet again you are expected to make it to the Finals. Loving this game. 1-1 after 2 periods. Canucks working so much harder tonight. Anaheim is bigger, faster and have a deeper roster, but the Canucks are outworking them tonight with quick passes allowing them to break out of their zone and get some offence.

Another thing, Vigneault has quit playing cat and mouse with the Sedin twins whenever the Ducks bring out their checking line. Instead of pulling the Sedins, he's leaving them out there and challenging them to beat the checkers. And the more he plays the Sedins, the longer the checkers have to play and it takes ice time away from the Selanne line.

They have to keep playing patient and aggressive hockey. Luongo will need to keep playing magician and we're due for a few lucky bounces.

Great games all weekend. I'd love to see the Canucks find a way to break through the Ducks. They had every opportunity yesterday.

As for the Wings, we have a good shot to win at least one of the road games. The team really got their shit together in the 2nd & 3rd peroids on Saturday. We will definetly be showing a more disiplined game in the first 10 minutes tonight and Hasek WON'T fuck up like that again. Nothing has been announced on Homer yet, but I think there's a good chence that he's back in tonight. The veterans are doing their job and the goal scorers are just getting warmed up- we're looking good.

The Shark tank is one big noise trap... Jesus.

Surprisingly, I've always thought that the SJ fans were always loud (moreso in the playoffs of course). Some announcers have even called the Shark Tank "Chicago Stadium West" which back in the early 90's might have been the loudest arena for crowd noise in my memory (Chicago, not SJ that is).

One thing for certain, it sure beats that study hall atmosphere in Anaheim's "Duck Pond" (eeuuuucchh).

It's a shame how the Chicago crowd noise went from that mayhem to the crickets of today. Really, for the NHL to be a healthy league in the USA, teams in New York, Chicago, Boston and Detroit all need to be competitive -- not Atlanta, Tampa, Anaheim and Nashville!!!

Although Atlanta and Anaheim aren't traditional hockey markets, they are pretty big sports markets. (Anaheim = LA basically). But I'll give you the other two. We need the Bruins, Blackhawks, Blues, hell, even the Caps. That video was great, and it is one of my earliest hockey memories as well. What's even more depressing is that we won't ever see a unanimous support for our troops again, as was shown in that video.:mad4:

I agree with the sell-out part. But as far as the blacking out goes, I heard that conversation on Face Off yesterday. What the guy didn't know was that the game gets blacked out on the national broadcast because it is shown on local tv. I'd much rather watch my local broadcast than the hacks on VS. Although I do like Dave Strader. However much like Nashville, and Carolina was last year a non deserving hockey market has a really sick team but it will make me sick if they win it all. VANCOUVER (CP) - Goaltender Roberto Luongo still won't say why he was late returning for the first overtime period of Vancouver's loss to the Anaheim Ducks Thursday night that eliminated the Canucks from the NHL playoffs.

''It was not an equipment problem,'' Luongo said Sunday as the Canucks cleaned out their lockers. ''Let's leave it like that.''

''It was an illness and nothing series.''

Luongo didn't answer when a reporter asked if the delay was caused because he was forced to use the bathroom.

Isles sign Dubielewicz to a one-year deal

The New York Islanders announced Tuesday that the club has signed goaltender Wade Dubielewicz to a one-year, one-way NHL contract for 2007-08.

"Wade really earned this opportunity," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow in a statement.

"He has developed steadily with each season in Bridgeport and played well whenever the Islanders needed him. And, of course, Wade's play down the stretch was instrumental in our team making the playoffs. We're very excited that he'll be an Islander next season."

Dubielewicz was 4-1 with a 2.06 GAA and a .934 save percentage. Prior to this season, the 28-year old played in nine games for the Islanders.

Over four full seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers – the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate – Dubielewicz was 58-52-8 with a 2.48 GAA and a .919 save percentage and 13 shutouts.

3 out 4 exactly right isn't bad. Too bad the one I got wrong wasn't the one I wanted to get wrong.

Off to the Conference Finals.

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
#1 BUFFALO SABRES vs. #4 OTTAWA SENATORS
The Ottawa Senators are playing like a team on a mission in these Stanley Cup Playoffs. After years of playoff dissapointment, it looks like Ottawa has finally righted the ship after making quick work of 2 tough teams in the Penguins and the Devils. 8-2 is their playoff record and they could have easily won the 2 games they lost, blowing a lead in Game 2 against the Penguins and losing in Overtime in Game 2 to the Devils. The Sabres escaped with their lives against the Rangers, and they were a few bounces or calls away from having to sweat things out against the Islanders in the 1st Round. These two teams hate one another stemming from the Regular season and when Buffalo made quick work of Ottawa last year in the 2nd Round. Ottawa is on a mission and I don't think there is much Buffalo can do to stop them. Buffalo is going to need to rely on a lot more than lucky bounces, and favorable officiating and reviews to beat Ottawa. They need to step up their game big time. Ryan Miller will need to be every bit as good as he has been and better. Ray Emery for Ottawa has shown that he is ready to step up and be the man that can get Ottawa over the top. He outplayed Brodeur, he can do the same to Miller. Buffalo is a team who was 7.7 seconds away from facing severe adversity against the Rangers. They have been just getting by in these playoffs and Ottawa is way too tough for them to just get by this time around.
PREDICTION: Senators in 5

WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
#1 DETROIT REDWINGS vs. #2 ANAHEIM DUCKS
The West Final is very similar to the East Final is you have a series where the #1 seed isn't necessarily the best team right now. The Redwings did a great job coming back in their series against San Jose, but it was San Jose's own defensive breakdown at the end of Game 4 that changed that series completely around and they could not recover. The Sharks didn't play their best series and the Redwings capitalized. Just like Buffalo, Detroit has escaped to get to the Conference Finals, and a much better opposition than the previous rounds awaits. The Ducks faced adversity in Round 1 with the absence of Jean-Sebastien Giguere and still made quick work of a pesky Minnesota team. Then they made quick work of a tired and poor offensive Vancouver team. The Redwings need to jump out early in this series because they have not played well on the road despite winning 2 out of 3 in San Jose. San Jose gave away Game 4, and were demoralized heading into Game 6. Throw in the fact that they lost 2 out of 3 in Calgary, who was not a very good hockey team down the stretch. The only way the Redwings can win this series is if Hasek's revitalized play isn't a fluke and he continues it against the Ducks. The Redwings absolutely must win Game 1 or it could be a quick series. The Ducks blue line combo of Pronger and Niedermayer is one of the best in NHL history. The loss of Mathieu Schneider for Detroit is going to hurt their blue line. Lidstrom will have to step up big time. I am very confident the Ducks will win the series and I am even going to say it will be a sweep.
PREDICTION: Ducks in 4

IIHF announces NHL-European Victoria Cup

The Victoria Cup (shape still to be determined) will be the ultimate match-up between the best European clubs and an NHL-challenger.
By IHWC.NET staff

KHODYNKA—May 8, 2007
History was made today when the IIHF announced the first-ever tournament on European soil featuring club teams from the National Hockey League and champions from the European leagues. The Victoria Cup will be competed for on an annual basis beginning September 2008. It will be a three-team competition, two teams from Europe and one from the NHL. The series is the first ever initiative to pit the top teams from North America versus the top teams from Europe.

This announcement was one of several which are the focus of the IIHF's 100th anniversary celebrations which kick off this fall.

The IIHF will replace the European Champions Cup with the new Champions Hockey League. This will consist of a series of stages among the top European club teams beginning in 2008 and will be the basis for determining which teams will be eligible to compete for the Victoria Cup. The CHL is modelled after soccer's successful Champions League.

The IIHF will formally recognize the Victoria Skating Rink as the birthplace of hockey. On March 3, 1875, the first true hockey game took place at that rink in Montreal. It was an indoor game featuring two teams, a referee, and a puck. The score was recorded, and the game was reported in the Montreal Gazette the day of the game to attract the interest of fans. A report was published in the Gazette the next day detailing the events of the game. A commemorative marker will be placed on the site of the rink which is currently a car rental agency. The rink's dimensions were 200' x 85' and it was this size that has been the standard for every North American rink ever since.

The IIHF will also formalize the Triple Gold Club by awarding commemorative medals to the 18 players who have won the three most prestigious championships in world hockey: Olympic gold, Stanley Cup, and World Championship gold. The ceremony will take place in Canada during next year's World Championship. The list includes: Tomas Jonsson (SWE), Hakan Loob (SWE), Mats Naslund (SWE), Valeri Kamensky (RUS), Alexei Gusarov (RUS), Peter Forsberg (SWE), Vyacheslav Fetisov (RUS), Igor Larionov (RUS), Alexander Mogilny (RUS), Vladimir Malakhov (RUS), Joe Sakic (CAN), Brendan Shanahan (CAN), Rob Blake (CAN), Scott Niedermayer (CAN), Jaromir Jagr (CZE), Jiri Slegr (CZE), Nicklas Lidstrom (SWE), Fredrik Modin (SWE).

Additionally, the IIHF will commission 50 experts in hockey to determine the all-time international All-Star Team (one goalie, two defencemen, three forwards). These names also will be announced during next year's World Championship in Canada.

Other celebrations include a coffee-table book celebrating the 100 years of the IIHF. The Top 100 international hockey stories of all time will be presented on www.IIHF.com starting approximately 100 days before Canada 2008, one day at a time, culminating with the number-one story at the opening of the tournament. On February 29, 2008, there will be a global hockey game. International Fan Day will take place in Canada during next year's tournament, and the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto will feature a special centennial exhibition on the history of international hockey. An outdoor rink will also be built on the grounds of the IIHF offices and will serve as host to a variety of events over the next season.

The IIHF was founded in Paris on May 15, 1908. Known originally as Ligue Internationale de Hockey sure Glace (LIHG), it organized the first international tournament at Les Avants, France, in 1910. North American teams first competed at the 1920 Olympics, and today the IIHF consists of 63 participating nations worldwide.

Since when was "The Losers' Cup" recognized as a prestigious championship to be considered equal with The Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold? What a bunch of self-important douchebags. Fuck that shit!

Jesus. 2 breakaways for the Senators while they are killing a penalty. I wonder if Ruff is going to pull his Sabres back from that run and gun they were doing in the first 5 minutes.

Sens can't win a faceoff to save their life. Despite being up 2-1, Buffalo is going to run right over Ottawa if they keep spotting them the puck after every whistle.

I think the only people in Canada actually cheering for Buffalo are the ones who are loaded with Sabres players in their Hockey pool. But I'm in the West, so not as many people are really giving a shit about this series outside of the patriotic Canadian angle. These games are usually over before anyone even gets home from their rush hour commute over here.

Ah, what the fuck am I saying? Everyone over here is still depressed about the Canucks.

My girlfriend is a Leafs fan, she chose the lesser of two evils. She's not really happy i'm cheering for the Sens, but she understands, as do I.

I'd be the same if the Leafs were still playing. I would cheer for any Canadian team, except the Leafs.

I have the game on my MyFi on the Buffalo feed. So when the scored I switched to hear Jeanerette's call... this man has officially pissed me off:

"He scoooooooooooooooooooooressss. Who needs Bobby Orr when you have Toni Lydman?!?!"

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING?! Time to retire old man, time to fucking retire.

Holy shit, what a goal to take this game into OT. Sens got caught overloading their players on the boards that Briere was able to tap in the easy one.
