Here's a shocker..
The Pittsburgh Penguins will announce tomorrow that Sidney Crosby will be named the team's captain.

At 19, Crosby will become the youngest captain in NHL history.

In just his second season, Crosby led the National Hockey League with 120 points while guiding the Penguins to their first playoff berth since 2001.

The Penguins have gone captain-less since Mario Lemieux's second retirement in January 2006.

Crosby has served as an alternate captain since midway through his rookie season.

Even though Ottawa is down 2-0 and I definently thought they would take a game in Anaheim, I wouldn't count them out just yet. They could have easily won both games and it's going to be a different story in Ottawa. I will still stand by my original prediction of Anaheim in 7.

BlackBerry owner re-activates his agreement with Hamilton, Ont to use their "main arena" (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2889504)

Balsillie given rights for Hamilton sports complex

You've just got to love this bit of irony.

Two days after NHL commissioner Gary Bettman scoffed at the likelihood of the Nashville Predators moving in the next year or two, and specifically scoffed at the notion they're headed to Southern Ontario, some news seems to suggest that is exactly the plan.

At a City of Hamilton council meeting Wednesday night, Canadian mega-millionaire Jim Balsillie, whose company helped develop the BlackBerry, reactivated an agreement with the city for exclusive rights to the city's main arena, Copps Coliseum. Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger said he and Balsillie talked about the agreement.

"He has assured me that he wants to secure a team and he is interested in bringing it to Hamilton," Eisenberger was quoted as saying Wednesday night in the Hamilton Spectator. "Certainly he has the resources to do it and we will leave it up to him to pull it together."

Balsillie has made an offer to purchase the Predators from current owner Craig Leipold. (**Leipold confirms the sale to Balsillie ** (http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070524.wsptpreds24/BNStory/GlobeSportsHockey/)) Given the team's declining attendance and scarcity of corporate support in the community, the team could be in a position as early as next summer to break its lease with the city of Nashville and relocate.

Balsillie, whose operation is in Southern Ontario, has been long-rumored to wanting an NHL franchise in the area. But in Bettman's "state of the union" address before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals Monday, the commissioner insisted such talk was pure speculation and that Balsillie told Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly he has no plans to move the Predators.

"I met with Mr. Balsillie last week. Bill Daly and I both did, and I specifically asked him whether or not he had specific plans or intentions with respect to moving the franchise, and he told me he did not," Bettman told reporters Monday. "And so, I think there's been entirely too much speculation in terms of what comes next.

"What's clear to me from meeting with Mr. Balsillie is that he's passionate about the game, would like to own a franchise, and certainly has the resources to do it. Beyond that, there have been no promises. There have been no predictions. And I think if anybody believes that [Nashville] is destined to a particular location, that's more a matter of speculation."

But talk is cheap, which is why Balsillie's renewed control of Copps Coliseum as it relates to the NHL seems to contradict Bettman's position.

The long-held theory has been that if Balsillie's more than generous offer to buy the Predators ($220 million) is green-lighted by the NHL's board of governors by the end of June and the Predators escape their lease, he would like to move the team into Copps Coliseum until a new facility can be built somewhere in the area outside the protected zones of both the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Earlier news reports say Balsillie has purchased a plot of land in the Waterloo area, a plot of land west of Toronto that could conceivably house a new NHL-sized arena.

Hands up for those who believe this is all a strange coincidence. No? Didn't think so.

Okay...benefits are as follows:
a franchise moves from the US to Canada!
Another team for Leafs fans to hate
no more of those fucking atrocious mustard jerseys
No worries of seeing the word "Nashville" etched onto the Stanley Cup

This series is amazing. It's a shame that the ratings don't reflect that because 1 of the teams is Canadian.

Pronger gets lucky as sin, only receives 1 game suspension (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2007/news/story?id=2891896)

Pronger suspended for hit to head on McAmmond

Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger received a one-game suspension Sunday for his hit to the head of Ottawa forward Dean McAmmond in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Pronger, also given a one-game ban during the Western Conference finals, leveled McAmmond with a forearm Saturday night in the Ducks' 5-3 loss to the Senators. He will miss Game 4 of the series, that Anaheim leads 2-1, on Monday night. He is eligible to return for Game 5 back in Anaheim on Wednesday.

It is the sixth career NHL suspension for the 6-foot-6, 220-pound, hard-hitting All-Star and the second in these playoffs. During the previous round against Detroit, Pronger was banned for Game 4 after his hit to the head of Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom against the boards.

"The positives that Chris Pronger brings to the table far outweigh the negatives," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said moments after the announcement. "We live with the suspension and we move forward."

Pronger wasn't penalized on the ice for either of the hits that led to his suspensions.

"A variety of factors were considered in reaching this decision," NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell said. "Mr. Pronger used his forearm to deliver a forceful hit to the head of his opponent. Also, his actions caused injury to his opponent."

McAmmond -- seven inches and 30 pounds smaller than Pronger -- was struck as he skated with the puck toward the Ducks net. He did a spin, fell backward, struck his head on the ice, and slid into the corner in the Anaheim zone at 2:01 of the third period.

"When I look at it, there are plusses and minuses to 6-foot-6," Campbell said. "Just because you have a height advantage doesn't mean you can deliver an elbow to the head.

"To us, an elbow to the head is a dangerous play regardless of the player's size."

McAmmond briefly lost consciousness, Senators coach Bryan Murray said, but there was no official announcement that the veteran of 14 NHL seasons sustained a concussion.

After receiving medical attention for several minutes, a dazed and woozy McAmmond was helped to the dressing room and didn't return. His status for Game 4 is questionable at best.

"McAmmond doesn't look promising," Senators coach Bryan Murray said Sunday before the suspension was levied.

Campbell said he had "no doubt" McAmmond was knocked out on the ice.

"We think it was totally unintentional. The league thought different," Carlyle said. "Chris Pronger is a competitive player. Some people will say he's using his size as an excuse.

"The fact of the matter is his elbows are higher than most people's elbows. It's not like he raised his elbow to deliver a blow to the head."

after seeing the hit, I thought it was totally intentional. And once again, the refs don't bother calling a penalty...fucking atrocious. I hate the "oh he's just a big guy" arguement that people always put out there. Zdeno Chara is even bigger than Pronger, and you don't see him elbowing people in the head like that...

I wouldn't call that a cheap shot, although it was definitely passive agressive. Scotty's a big boy, he's taken a few shots I reckon. I think if Alfie had actually wanted to hurt him with the shot, he probably would have done it. It seems like he did that more to get his team fired up for the 3rd probably. Either way, things aren't looking good for the Sens, and I hope Chris Pronger disappears mysteriously, or at least can't make it for when the Ducks clinch. NEW YORK -- The Stanley Cup finals have brought record low ratings to NBC for a prime-time program, sports or otherwise.

Ottawa's 5-3 victory over Anaheim in Game 3 Saturday night received a 1.1 national rating and a 2 share, the network said Tuesday. . .

A ratings point represents 1,114,000 households.

If im reading this right, Neilson estimates there is about 111,400,000 house with TVs in the country and that out of that, only 1% watched this?

Judging by how people decide to watch poker on television, I blame this on the stupidity of our society in general. I cant tell people what to watch, if they want to miss out on a great sport, one of the few leagues with dignity left then its their loss.
Anyway, did anyone expect good ratings for Ducks vs Senators?

I dont think its all ESPNs fault. They could give it more coverage but do you think people would even care or notice if they did? Noone gives a shit about hockey. Roughly 1.7 million people watched this game. Whats the population of Southern California? There has to be at least a couple million people living there and they cant even get into it. Do people in Ottawa even have TVs?
1.7 for a championship game on national TV is really sad.

Wasn't it broadcast on 3 different networks? I think CBC, NBC and RDS

EVERYONE in Canada watches it on CBC, and the ratings have been great for them. I don't give a fuck if NBC has shitty ratings, they didn't even carry the OT of the conference finals.

And if this means some teams fold, even better.

I'm not one of those people who need everyone to love what they do in order to validate it. If you don't like hockey, don't watch it.

Viewership in Canada doesn't count towards the NBC number. That's a key contributor to the low rating since their is only 1 home team market. The NHL has has the unfortunate luck of having 3 consecutive finals featuring a Canadian Team and a small market US team. Granted I realize Anaheim is part of the LA Market which is a big market but not when it comes to hockey.

If im reading this right, Neilson estimates there is about 111,400,000 house with TVs in the country and that out of that, only 1% watched this?

Ratings is the number of all households with a TV.
Share is the number of households actually watching their TV.

So in this case... NBC had 1.1% of all American households... whether or not their TV was on.

But out of all the TVs turned on, 2% were tuned in to the game.

Ratings/Share and total viewers

Nielsen Television Ratings are reported by ranking the percentage for each show of all viewers watching television at a given time. As of September 2006, there are an estimated 115.2 million television households in the USA. A single national ratings point represents 1%, or 1,102,000 households for the 2006-07 season. Share is the percentage of television sets in use tuned to a specific program. These numbers are usually reported as (ratings points/share). For example, Nielsen may report a show as receiving a 9.2/15 during its broadcast, meaning 9.2%, or 10,138,400 households on average were tuned in at any given moment. Additionally, 15% of all televisions in use at the time were tuned into this program. Nielsen re-estimates the number of households each August for the upcoming television season.

EDIT: Did I mention I hate fucking ratings? And I hate the Neilsen system. Wanna know how useless it is? A test pattern gets ratings. Someone tell me how a home that doesn't have it's TV on can be counted as a "viewer" for a show? No one in my biz can.

Ottawa doesn't even look like they want to be there tonight. On that last PP, Emery could/should have come out and played the puck offensively...instead he stays in the crease, waits for it to bounce off the end boards, then taps it behind the goal with under a minute left.

Given the way they played, they got lucky to only be down 2-0

Condolences indeed... Sens looked hopeful but they just got too banged up and ran out of gas. In hindsight if we were in your place and the Rangers made it this far they probably would have just been swept by the Ducks, since the Sens are tougher and still had a hard time getting their game going.

News for Isles fans:
Isles' prospect Okposo staying in college
New York Islanders

Canadian Press

6/8/2007 10:10:33 AM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CP) - New York Islanders first round draft pick Kyle Okposo announced Friday that he has decided to remain at the University of Minnesota for the 2007-08 hockey season.

The 19-year-old forward from St. Paul, Minn., was selected seventh overall in last year's draft.

"I feel returning to school best serves my future as an NHL player at this time," said Okposo. "I want to be able to step right in and help the Islanders in the future. I didn't feel that I can do that right now.

"Minnesota is the best place for me to be so I can continue my development."

Okposo played for the U.S. team that won bronze at the world junior championship in Sweden.

He also finished second on the team in scoring during his freshman year at Minnesota with 19 goals and 21 assists for 40 points.

The Islanders are supportive of his decision to stay in college.

"Kyle has a very bright future and another year at the collegiate level will give him the opportunity to continue his development into the player we all imagine he can be one day," said Islanders GM Garth Snow. "We're looking forward to watching Kyle be a leader at Minnesota this season."
