Mark Cuban Says NHL Can Compete With NBA
Sports – "People in the States underestimate hockey. More people watch Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday nights than watch NBA basketball on Thursday night in the States. People in the U.S. don't realize that there are more hockey fans in a country of 32.8 million than there are NBA fans in the U.S."
Found this interesting. It would be great for him to get an NHL team. I don't think that the NHL will ever be on the NBA's level.
The NHL needs some major catching up to do. I don't think, at this moment, there are "4 major sports" in the country. NFL, MLB, NBA(distant 3rd), NHL (too far off the radar, right now).
I'm a huge hockey fan but the last two years have, for the most part, been off my radar as well. I'm sure a good stanley cup run for the wings would spark my interest. But the NHL has to get thier old fans back before new ones come in.
They have fixed the game, although i'll never be a fan of the shoot-out. The financial system needed to be fixed and was. It can only gain from here. Getting back on ESPN is important at this point. I just hate to support ESPN's hockey because the vast majority of their "pundits" knock hockey on a regular basis. This will help raise the profile.

Mark Cuban, Dan Marino(both from Pittsburgh) and some other private investors wanted to buy the pens, but Mario and the league said no. I think he would be great for the league, anything to get some publicity at this point. And he also promised to keep them in Pitt. The people running the league right now suck.

Indeed they do. No team that has won a cup should leave a city. Cuban would be a perfect owner for that team... young players, young owner, and a city that loves their hockey. The NHL is dumb on many levels right now.

That's the word from XM204 right now. With a possible expansion in 2 or 3 seasons expanding the league to 32 teams, with new teams probably in the west (Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Portland) permitting Detroit and Columbus to move to the eastern conference where they belong.

I really really really want to see another Canadian team. It's their sport, for eff's sake. But yeah, a guy like Cuban would do WONDERS for this sport. We need someone outspoken and who will get the attention it needs.
People just don't follow hockey because they assume there's not enough scoring. (Which is why soccer viewing is crap and basketball is huge -- the vast majority of us Americans have no attention span.)
Las Vegas would be a good addition. Seattle would be good, but might be in Vanc's market. But there's too many teams in the league right now.

I wouldn't mind seeing another Canadian team, though I think it is highly unlikely it will ever happen again. I know Winnipeg and Hamilton come to mind. Both cities could do fairly well, though I'm not sure corporate sponsorship would be as good compared to Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver...that and a bad arena did Winnipeg in the first time. It's all about putting teams in markets that don't need hockey. I guarantee Nashville will be next to move after Pittsburgh. Their challenging Anaheim and playing great hockey, yet their attendance continues to slide and there's no sponsors. Hockey shouldn't have been in Nashville anyway.
I'd say the same about the Canes here in Raleigh, however, things have really turned here since the lockout, which I'm sure helps with the Cup here. Karmanos (canes owner) has said multiple times that he has no interest in moving. Of course, he once said the same about the Whalers. But hockey is doing VERY well down here, they've got a great arena, they've sold out most of their games this season and more than half last season, except for a handful of weekday games...and they've even raised ticket prices. Getting sponsors has not been an issue, considering Research Triangle Park is a mere 10 minutes from the arena. RTP is the second largest industrial park in the nation. This allows such corporations like Glaxo-Smith Kline, RBC Centura, Sony, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Nortel, Progress Energy, Pepsi, etc to get involved and become sponsors. I can't say the same for places like Nashville, or Tampa, or Miami, or Kansas City.

Oilers won tonight 4-1 over and injury riddled Ducks. The oilers are also without 5 regulars right now, so I'd say both teams were even. 2 in a row, 4 of their last 6, maybe it's a sign of things to come.
Oh, and as sad as it is, we'll never see another team added in Canada. Winnipeg and Quebec City just built new arenas that are too small, and Hamilton can barely support the Ti-Cats and Bulldogs. I would think the only city that could support a team up here would be either Saskatoon or Regina. The province rabidly supports the 'Ridersand any other major junior hockey. They don't have a ton of people, but there are busloads of Saskabushians that come to Edmonton for every home game.

I agree with that, but then you look in places like Chicago where no one is going to watch anymore. That's an original six team that gets little to no support, even though they suck, you'd think it'd be full all the time.

Not in this country, not at this moment. The NHL has fallen off so much here, they are irrelavent. They literally get ONE night on ESPN. No games(they are on a little known network), a highlight or two, and that douche Barry Melrose "breaking it down."
It hasn't been on the NBA's level and there have always been a TON of hockey haters here but the NHL did enough. Now it is almost a joke. I think that will change and I think Mark Cuban getting in the NHL will help a lot. Just for the fact that all the hockey haters(including ESPN) love the guy.

The NHL's marketing dept is doing a lot, too... but more could always be done. They're doing a lot of brand placement in sitcoms, dramas, etc. In the last media newsletter, they talk about how the show "Monk" has an upcoming episode where part of it takes place at a Sharks game.
Things like that bring more attention to the game, which is what Cuban will do.
And as for Chicago, the team really needs to do more to get their profile up in the community there. Maybe lower ticket prices or something, who knows.
The other big thing that I think will get people more involved and interested... is an overhaul of how the game is broadcasted. Bettman promised during the lockout that there'd be changes - like bringing the fans closer than ever before... blah blah blah. Well... looks the same to me.
How about mic'ing up all the players? And the coach? And let's listen in a lot more than just 10 seconds every 5th game. How about the wireless cameras on the helmets? They're small enough now to not make a difference. How about more goalie-cam shots? How about staying with the behind-the-net shot during a power play? Maybe a track camera to run along the top of the glass to follow along with the breakout?
Things like this that would change the way the game is brought to the people... rather than changing the game itself. I think that'd bring in more viewers.

It's only a select few games that wind up as PPV, just the games that don't get picked up by CBC, TSN or Sportsnet. I believe all the Canadian teams do a few PPV games except Toronto, because they have their own fucking channel (Leafs TV). This way all games end up televised one way or another. I don't usually buy these games, but the Canucks are playing so well right now and there's always that off-chance that both Vancouver and Buffalo might spring out their retro jerseys tonight -- that would be worth the admission for me.
If I wasn't coming off a wicked flu bug, I'd probably be watching tonight's game from a sports bar -- while paying $6 a beer, hmmm. Maybe it is cheaper to buy my own beer and watch the game at home.

They said that a contract should go through by season's end between Comcast and NHL Network. If Comcast doesn't come up with a deal by the end of the season they have to pay something crazy like a $15 million dollar penalty. Then we'll see which providers actually pick it up. :icon_conf I was watching on the stream last night and the channel is absolutely fantastic.
In other news: There were rumors flying that the league was going to change the schedule structure back to to the way it was before the lockout (play divisional opponents 6 times, play everyone in the league at least once). The League's Board of Governors meeting this morning decided that the schedule will stay the same for at least one more season.

NHL Network Coming To America!
Today @ 12:19 AM ET | Comments (31)
It’s always nice of the major sports networks in the United States to donate about 20-30 seconds of their show to sneak in a NHL highlight or two. Hockey fans around the country definitely appreciate it.
If you live in the United States and you are tired of watching 59 minutes of basketball and baseball highlights then listen up.
As we sit today the NHL Network is negotiating with U.S. cable and satellite distributors with hopes of launching the NHL network in the United States in time for the playoffs this spring.
The network is prepared to launch right now. A master control studio has already been built in the Washington D.C. area.
The NHL Network would be its very own channel similar to the successful NFL network. The network would carry NHL related programming 24 hours a day seven days a week.
When the original deal was agreed upon between the NHL and Comcast (on behalf on OLN now VS), Comcast guaranteed a launch of the network in the U.S. no later than 24 months from the time the original contract was signed.
That was back in late July of 2005 after the NHL lockout. In other words the network was to be launched in the U.S. by July of 2007 or Comcast would have to pay a significant penalty to the league if the network wasn’t launched within 24 months (believed to be $15 million).
Comcast is more than prepared to put the signal on a channel on its cable network. That is not the issue. The issue now is that the league and its partners as owners of the NHL network want cash per subscriber.
Trying to decide how much to charge a subscriber is certainly one thing, how much the NHL gets per subscriber is a whole separate issue. This apparently was not negotiated in the original contract.
The NFL network has been working through the same issues here in the States with certain Cable distributors such as Cablevision and Time Warner. They have agreed to carry it, but the league and partners want cash for each subscriber.
Currently the NHL network has a deal where they can televise 40 NHL regular season games a year. Scheduling those games in Canada can be tricky because the network is not allowed to broadcast any NHL games at the same time any one of the six Canadian teams are playing. The network usually carries games on Sunday’s. The Anaheim Ducks are often showcased because they schedule a lot of late Sunday night games.
This obviously would not be an issue in the U.S. About 90% of the American and Canadian programming would be exactly the same. The only difference is that the American feed would be able to show more games without the same Canadian restrictions.
The bottom line is, the NHL needs a change.
They have to be visible, they need an identity and having its very own network would certainly be a major step in the right direction.
VS has done a nice job, but take a step back and get serious for a minute. We all know VS is not a destination for sports fans. I understand they are trying but until they land MLB, NBA, or NFL broadcasting rights it will remain exactly what is, which is a new channel that sits on the opposite end of the dial (where available) without any mainstream professional sports contracts except for the NHL.
NHL athletes deserve better. They train hard, on a individual level they are some of the best people you will ever meet. Don’t treat them like they are minor league. I understand they get paid well, but the individual athletes have earned their money. They need support from the league to allow them to receive the same respect athletes from the other top four major sports are getting.
An official announcement regarding the launch of the NHL network in the United States is just around the corner!

Conroy begins second stint in Calgary following trade
Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the acquisition of center Craig Conroy from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for center Jamie Lundmark and two future draft choices.
"He's a proven, veteran player with intangibles," said Sutter.
"I think there has been something missing from our team to be honest," said Sutter. "I think that this will alleviate some of the attention that Daymond Langkow now gets."
Conroy returns to Calgary where he played in four seasons between 2001 and 2004.
The 6’2”, 197lb forward was a member of the Flames Western Conference championship team during the 2003-04 season and captained the club during the 2002-03 campaign.
In 237 regular season games with the Flames he recorded 188 points with 60 goals and 128 assists. During the 03-04 playoffs he added another 17 points including 6 goals in 26 games.
He was Jarome Iginla's centre for much of his time in Calgary and there is no doubt that the pair had developed a chemistry.
"There's no doubt he worked well with Jarome," said Sutter.
A veteran of 12 NHL seasons, Conroy has twice been a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy while accumulating 411 points in 706 career games with Montreal, St. Louis, Calgary and Los Angeles.
Conroy signed as a free agent with Los Angeles on July 6, 2004.
Sutter said the two clubs have been speaking about a potential trade since last summer.
"It is probably something we had talked about from the Entry Level Draft," said Sutter.
In 52 games this season he has recorded 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 points.
Sutter expects Conroy to provide much of the same enthusiasm and energy he provided when he was here in Calgary. He will also help on face-offs and can play on special teams.
"Craig Conroy is a good player. He has assets," said Sutter
Conroy is expected to dress against his former team on Tuesday as the Flames host the Kings. Conroy was in Red Deer where the Kings practised on Monday when told of the trade.
"You don't get a day off because of a trade, do you?" smiled Sutter when asked if Conroy would be in the line-up.
Originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens as their sixth round selection (123rd overall) in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Conroy was traded to St. Louis in 1996. Calgary first acquired the former U.S. Olympian with a seventh round pick from St. Louis on March 13, 2001 in exchange for Cory Stillman.
A native of Potsdam, NY, Conroy has represented the United States at the 2006 Olympics and at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
Sutter said he spoke with Lundmark and had told him he would try and find him a place to play regularly in the NHL.
"I thought Jamie played well for me last year," said Sutter. "For some reason that wasn't happening this year. I told him if he wasn't playing regular here I would try and find him a place where he could play regularly."
Conroy is expected to wear No. 24 on Tuesday.

The gap in the Eastern Conference seems to be growing with Washington, Boston, and Florida falling behind. I really don't think any three of those teams getting their act together to put forth a good enough run to compete with the others. The battle clearly lies from the Isles up. It's gonna be a very interesting run. I really wonder what's going on with Toronto. Sundin is rumored to be traded by the deadline and I don't know if that shake-up will be good for the Leafs or if it will knock them out.
I'm also not so sure about Pittsburgh. They're young and very dependent on guys like Crosby, Malkin, and Fleury to carry them the rest of the way. I could be wrong, but I can envision them dropping. If something like that were to happen...that may set up a battle for 8th between the Rangers and Isles, which would be an amazing battle. There are what...still 4 more games, 8 potential points, between the two teams against each other? That's a huge swing and the Rangers will have to wake up and start taking some games against the Isles in order to make this a good run.

Buffalo, NJ, and Atlanta are the only teams that are most likely a lock for the playoffs at this point, the rest of the eastern conference aside from Philly still certainly has a chance.. I'm not panicking yet, it'll make for an exciting stretch.

The Isles, Florida, Pittsburgh, and Tampa all inch up two more points tonight, while Montreal squeezed a point out of the Pens.
There is a 3-way tie at 58 points for 6th-8th spots. Even Montreal and Ottawa sitting in 4th-5th with 62 points aren't a sure lock. This could be a great run.

I had Colorado totally out of the playoffs a month ago. I'm amazed at how well they've played. Pittsburgh had a similar run after the All-Star break. They went from 12th to 5th within the span of a month. I think the Pens lack depth and experience. Crosby can take them far, but I think they'll get knocked out in the first round.
Hoagie
03-21-2007, 03:06 AM
Experience yes. But the Penguins definitely don't lack depth. With guys like Crosby, Malkin, Recchi, Roberts, Staal and Malone you can mix and match 2 pretty high powered lines. And then with guys like Christensen, Armstrong, Oullet, Talbot, Ruutu, Laraque you get a third line that make some things happen and solid fourth line. I don't think depth is a problem at all.
The key for the Pens is going to be having the patience to work the tighter playoff defenses without getting over aggressive and putting themselves in a bad spot. They also need to do a better job of holding the lead and keeping their focus so they close out games. And most importantly, stepping up their defensive play and NOT TAKING PENALTIES. If they stay out of the box, there is a good chance they will win games.

It's not that odd when you factor in all those extra points for OT/SO wins. Those are points that the Pens of the past never had a chance to win. Unfortunately you can't compare overall points these days to the previous "no guaranteed extra point days".

It's not that odd when you factor in all those extra points for OT/SO wins. Those are points that the Pens of the past never had a chance to win. Unfortunately you can't compare overall points these days to the previous "no guaranteed extra point days".It's not based on points. It's wins vs. losses. I understand this year we probably have more wins this year that would have ended in ties in the past. But I would have thought the Pens had more seasons with more wins then losses on the road is all.

This year has been brutal as a Flyer fan...but watching Crosby mature has been something special. He hasn't whined as much to the officials, and has taken care of his business under tremendous pressure. I'm actually impressed a lot with him.
He's the kind of player that the NHL needs to get going again.
Okay, I feel nauseous now...

How do you feel about the NHL schedule format?
1) There should be more games against the other conference (248) 89%
2) Like it the way it is (25) 9%
3) There should be fewer games against the other conference (6) 2%
I like that. More west coast teams would kind of break up the monotony of the regular season at times.
What would you do to change the shootout?
1) Nothing, it¹s fine the way it is (197) 70%
2) Expand it to five shooters per side (58) 21%
3) Abolish it (25) 9%
This is surprising. I'd think the players would have hated it, since it becomes a simple skills competition instead of a game.
Do you think a point should be awarded for an overtime/shootout loss?
1) Yes (210) 75%
2) No (70) 25%
This is also surprising. I'd think the players were purists, and would want to see it go back to the way it was.
What is an appropriate penalty for fighting?
1) 5 minutes (273) 97%
2) 10 minutes (5) 2%
3) 20 minutes (3) 1%
4) Game misconduct (0)
Well, this should go a long way to ending that goddamn "lets pussify-hockey by getting rid of the fighting" debate.
To what city would you least like to be traded?
1) Buffalo Sabres (40) 16%
2) Edmonton Oilers (28) 11.2%
3) New York Islanders (24) 9.6%
I don't get Buffalo as a response, since it's so close to the #1 choice, Toronto. We can all understand the third choice, however. :action-sm
What is the toughest building to play in on the road?
10) Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers (6) 2.4%
That's pathetic. This time next year, after a full season with Avery, Hollweg and Orr, I'm sure MSG will be higher on this list.
Who is the most hated player in the NHL?
1) Sean Avery (168) 66.4%
Haha... Nice. Let them hate him. Easier for him to draw penalties.
Who is the most overrated player in the NHL?
11) Daniel Alfredsson, Patrice Bergeron, Joel Bouchard, Jason Blake, Martin Brodeur, Anson Carter, Zdeno Chara, Mike Comrie, Peter Forsberg, Dominic Hasek, Nikolai Khabibulin, Alex Kovalev, Matthew Lombardi, Roberto Luongo, John Madden, Evgeni Malkin, Willie Mitchell, Chris Neil, Alexander Ovechkin, Brendan Shanahan, Bryan Smolinski, Ryan Smyth, Eric Stall, Mats Sundin, Alex Tanguay, Tim Taylor and Doug Weight (1) 0.5%

I watched the game tonight. Bertuzzi played pretty well, and has been the last couple of games. The only thing that confused me would be why Osgood would get the start over Hasek in such a big game. If I were a Wings fan, that would worry me going into the playoffs.

The NHL telecast on NBC drew a larger national audience than ABC's National Basketball Association telecast (Phoenix Suns-Sacramento Kings). Each network earned a 1.0 rating (percentage of households tuned in), but NBC pulled in a larger audience share (percentage of time that people spent watching the telecast), 3 compared with 2. In total viewership, NBC outdrew ABC 1.31 million to 1.26 million.

At least Opie doesn't have season tickets with your favorite team. The Isles haven't won a playoff series since they eliminated the Pens in 1993, in fact, they've only made the playoffs 4 times since then! Thanks Opie!

That doesn't mean anything when it come to playoffs and Stanley Cups. Especially since the city that was voted highest in that category is one of the favorites to win this year. Our next two games are against a Montreal team that is ON FIRE, and Pittsburgh away. I think there is a need to be.

If you can split with Montreal you'll be in good shape. When you play Pittsburgh you'll probably be facing Thibault in goal and alot of line juggling in preperation for the playoffs. Pittsburgh will be more interested in staying healthy then winning the game.

Tonight's Edmonton@Calgary game should be a bloodbath as well. Flames still need 2 points to clinch a playoff spot and Colorado can still make the playoffs if they win tonight and tomorrow. And If any team in the league wants to spoil the Flames chances, it is the Oilers, especially after having a decent season completely fall off the wheels in the 2nd half of the season.
So if the Flames lose and the Av's win tonight, that will mean that tomorrow's Calgary@Colorado game will decide who gets the final Western playoff spot.

Right now there are only 27 out of 65 cards available. Points are very important. Logging in as much as you can gets you points, but apparently the ones at the top are the people who have Verizon and Bell because they use their phone codes and get extra points for that. I don't even think I know anyone with Verizon. My girl is Canadian, no one in her family has Bell.

Hmmm... Idk. Not sure if I got points for starting a group. Start WackbagII and see what happens. I'll join.
I play all the vids, and do all the things you need to get coins as often as possible.
Edit: I'm not in the top 50... but I gotta be pretty high up there.

Pens are gonna be on the road against the Sens for the first round. It should be a fun series to watch but I don't think anyone can really pick one team over the other right now. But nice wins over the Sens and the Rangers in the last 2 games indicates that the Pens are as ready as their gonna be this year. Win or lose this has been one of the best seasons of Penguins hockey ever.

What's it been... 13 years since all 3 metro teams made it?
I usually stay out of the stupid mudslinging that goes on between Isles/Rangers fans.
It's fucking retarded. It always leads to stupid grade school jabs.
I know a few of you Ranger fans were ready to pounce but wtf man, you gotta give the team some credit. A lot of teams would have called it a season weeks ago.
And you GOTTA be happy at the possibility (however slim) of an Islander/Ranger matchup. THAT'S fucking hockey! Neither side can say that that matchup wouldn't make for some great hockey.
And the Devils, I have A LOT of respect for the Devils... how could you not?

Well, the Leafs dropped that head to head with the Isles this week... 100% their fault. Montreal shit the bed when they didnt show up against the Rangers and totally fell apart last night. The Isles lost their gem and many people counted them out. They rallied behind Dubie and got what they needed to get done. The deserving team sits in the 8th spot, and that is the Islanders. Canada can fucking cry all they want, but if their teams deserved to make it, they would have not needed to count on the last game of the season for it. The Canadian teams that deserve to make it are the 3 that are in it.
As for you Farside I agree and disagree with what you're saying, but that mudslinging is what's so great about the rivalry. Of course I would have laughed my ass off if the Isles dropped that game today, but I'm also a fan of hockey first, and the Rangers second, and hopefully our 3 teams can gain some of the spotlight in the local media because the only 3 times hockey made the cover of the sports page this season were:
1. The Ryan Smyth trade
2. Chris Simon/Ryan Hollweg
3. Ice whores complaining.
And I'm with you, I have lots of respect for the Devils, they don't get intimidated by the scorn they get from the rest of the league about their style, they stick to it, and continue to succeed.
It's playoff time, and I'm so pumped.

And with the close of the regular season that means that your 2006/2007 scoring champion is 19 year old Sidney Crosby. The first teenager to ever win the Art Ross trophy (Gretzky finished tied with Marcel Dionne in 79-80 but Dionne got the trophy because he had more goals). And is a front runner to win MVP.
Evgeni Malkin finishes with 85 points, 9 more then Paul Stastny who finished second and has to be considered the front runner for Rookie of the Year.
And the Penguins are the most improved team in the NHL this season and, by winning 25 more games this year then last, won over twice as many games as they did last year making head coach Michel Therrien one of the front runners for the Coach of the Year.
I just thought I would point that out.

I think they should all win their awards. Crosby (Hart) Malkin (Calder) Therrien (Adams). However good luck against Ottawa. I think the Sens are too tough for you. Even though you guys finished 11 points ahead of the Rangers. You can't tell me you wouldn't rather be in the Rangers position and playing Atlanta instead of Ottawa.

You can't tell me you wouldn't rather be in the Rangers position and playing Atlanta instead of Ottawa.Maybe. Ottawa is a great team but if they return to their past playoff form (as in every year up until last year) then I would rather play Ottawa. If they don't tank it then it will be a very difficult series and Atlanta would be preferrable. Either way, though, Ottawa will be a much better learning experience for the young players. Going into this season we hoped the Pens would just compete for a playoff spot. They have already exceeded those hopes. Any winning at this point is just icing on the cake...and experience on the youth that will be back and better then ever next year.

2007 NHL PLAYOFFS PREDICTIONS AND ANALYSIS
EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS
#1 BUFFALO SABRES vs. #8 NEW YORK ISLANDERS
You have to give the Islanders a lot of credit for getting here when all looked lost. They survived the loss of Rick DiPietro and they survived what could have been the most heartbreaking loss in the history of hockey against the Devils. However surviving against Buffalo should be a whole different story. Buffalo has gotten healthy and have gotten their game back after slipping a bit late in the year. Wade Dubiielwicz has been a nice spark for the Islanders but can he do it for the long run? Highly unlikely. Even with Rick DiPietro healthy and at his best the Islanders would have a tough time in this series. The Islanders have nothing to lose , which could make the series interesting if the Islanders can steal a game in Buffalo. But even if they do, the last two times the Islanders made the playoffs as the 8 seed, they split the first two only to lose the remaining 3 games. I'll give the Islanders a game but I can't see them making much more of it here. Buffalo is too tough.
PREDICTION: Sabres in 5
#2 NEW JERSEY DEVILS vs. #7 TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
This should be a fun series as the defensive approach of the Devils meets the high power offense of Tampa. For Tampa to win this series, Vinny LeCavalier and Martin St. Louis will have to maintain the mass production they achieved during the season. The Ligthning are a dangerous team and can compete with the Devils, but will likely make the difference in this series is the goaltending matchup of Brodeur vs. Holmqvist, or even Denis if he gets some time. The great goaltending of Khabibulin helped the Lightining win a cup in 2004, they have been missing that since and that's why they have become a bottom seeded playoff team the past two seasons. I see the Lightning hanging in there and making it a series, but the Devils will prevail.
PREDICTION: Devils in 7
#3 ATLANTA THRASHERS vs. #6 NEW YORK RANGERS
This should be another fun series as the Rangers look for their first playoff victory in 10 years while the Thrashers will be playing in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Thrashers struggled the second half of the season, almost blowing the Southeast Title which was seemingly a lock. The Rangers were the complete opposite with a second half surge that brought them all the way to the #6 seed. Atlanta is very tough with the likes of Kovalchuck, Hossa, Tkachuck, and Kozlov, but you can't take away the Rangers momentum and their advantage in nets with Lundqvist vs. Lehtonen. One thing is for sure, if the returning Marcel Hossa turns out to be the better Hossa in this series, the Rangers will win easily. Ex
