Tests of Vick water bottle could take months
Falcons QB probed in Miami airport incident

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick could be deep in the two-a-days of summer camp before there is any word about what was in the water bottle confiscated from him at Miami International Airport on Wednesday.

The bottle contained a secret compartment that allegedly held "a dark particulate," according to the police report. It said the substance smelled like marijuana.

The bottle was taken to the Miami-Dade Police Department crime lab. Police spokesman Robert Williams said Thursday it could take months before it is analyzed.

"In the big scheme of things, as far as MDPD is concerned, that's not a major case," Williams said. "We have homicides and sexual batteries and other things that are probably going to take precedence, so that's going to be months down the road."

The Falcons are aware of the incident involving their star player, who is playing under an NFL-high $130 million contract.

"We understand there have been reports of an alleged incident involving Michael Vick that took place earlier [Wednesday] at Miami International Airport. We plan to look into this matter and discuss it further with Michael before having any further comment," Reggie Roberts, the Falcons' vice president of football communications said late Wednesday night.

Vick was not arrested and caught his morning flight to Atlanta, where he spent part of the day at the team's Flowery Branch headquarters. He was scheduled to meet new coach Bobby Petrino for the first time, but it was cancelled because Petrino had another appointment. Vick did speak with some members of the coaching staff.

The Falcons were unaware of the airport incident until late Wednesday night, Roberts said.

Vick could not be reached for comment.

According to the police report, Vick drew suspicion when he refused to part with a bottle of water at a security-screening checkpoint. Bottled liquids of more than 3 ounces have been prohibited at most U.S. airports for months for security reasons.

Vick eventually threw the bottle in a waste container but his initial reluctance caused TSA official Gertrude Joseph to examine the bottle, described as a 20-ounce Aquafina bottle. Joseph then notified her supervisor of a hidden compartment in the bottle.

Fellow TSA screeners said they saw Vick throw the bottle into the container, which surveillance cameras confirmed, according to the police report.

"The top half contained a small amount of clear liquid. When held upright the bottle appeared to be half full of water," according to the police report.

If Vick is found to be involved in any wrongdoing, he could face legal repercussions as well as discipline from the NFL.

League spokesman Greg Aiello said that the NFL was not aware of the incident at Miami International Airport involving Vick as of Wednesday night, so there would be no comment from the league office at that time.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has taken a very harsh stance against negative off-field behavior and explained his position regarding the league's image to Falcons players after a practice he attended late this season.

Vick was fined $10,000 by the NFL and agreed to donate an additional $10,000 to charity after making an obscene gesture toward fans at the Georgia Dome following a 31-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 26.

This incident could bring further scrutiny on the Falcons' most scrutinized player, who last season threw for a career-high 20 touchdowns and became the first NFL quarterback to rush for more than 1,000 yards but also failed to get the Falcons, who finished 7-9, to the playoffs for the second straight season.

The Falcons have remained committed to Vick, with team president and general manager Rich McKay saying Wednesday morning that Vick is the team's starting quarterback, despite speculation that backup Matt Schaub could compete for the job.

Staff writer Mike Morris contributed to this report.

What a fucking dumb ass. With all the traveling he does why would
he even try to carry a water bottle into an airport? He obviously
knows about all the restrictions that are in place.

I look for Schaub to be a starter in another city. There is no way Arthur Blank is going to abandon his boy Mike..... Damn shame too.......

If all this turns out to be true it would sure explain why Vick has trouble reading defenses

I agree, this guy has done absolutely nothing but make a few ESPN highlight reels and flip off a bunch of fans in Atlanta.

I would hope that the Falcons would just get rid of this guy and go with Matt Schaub at QB. If they decide to keep going with the Michael Vick experiment again then they're in for another lost season. This guy has had enough time to learn that offense and figure out how to be a NFL QB, but apparently he won't ever conform to it.

This guy is just a take off at first instinct runner who's back there wearing a QB number. Its obvious with him being the rushing leader on the Falcons. Jesus Christ some Atlanta fans miss the days of Chris Chandler being a statue back there but at least he was a passer.

Vick won't be gone...his contract is so fucking bloated that cutting him would be a massive salary cap hit and pbbbbbbbtth, he ain't going anywhere.

Petrino may wind up using Vick more out of position and at least Schaub will be getting some serious snaps. Make it an open competition...Schaub will beat him

Vick stays & "is our starter" (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2740940)

Falcons: Vick is our starter, not on trading block

ATLANTA -- Michael Vick will not be traded and will be the Atlanta Falcons' starting quarterback in 2007, the team's ownership said Tuesday.

"There are no plans to trade him or cut him," Kim Shreckengost, executive vice president of operations for Arthur M. Blank Group, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Michael is our quarterback and the leader of our team. We have a new head coach who is anxious to start working with him. Everyone has high expectations of him going into next season. Michael has those too."

Vick came under scrutiny when on Jan. 17, he attempted to bring a water bottle through airport security in Miami. Lab tests on the bottle, which contained a hidden compartment that police suspected may have contained marijuana, later found no evidence of drugs.

Vick was never arrested or charged. but the incident was not well-received in Atlanta, where earlier this season he was fined for making an obscene gesture at fans after a home loss to the New Orleans Saints. In that instance, Vick apologized, paid a $10,000 fine and donated another $10,000 to charity.

After the airport incident, Vick sat down with Blank, new coach Bobby Petrino and general manager Rich McKay. McKay described Blank as being "upset" with the quarterback at the meeting and said Vick was told future incidents would not be tolerated.

While the team is committed to Vick as starter, there are financial reasons for keeping him as well. The Journal-Constitution reported that if the Falcons were to trade or cut Vick, they would take a hit of roughly $23 million against the $109 salary cap in 2007, probably forcing additional roster cuts and limiting the team's efforts to sign free agents and draft picks.

In 74 career NFL games, Vick has completed 930 of 1,730 passes for 11,505 yards and 71 touchdowns with 52 interceptions. He had career bests of 20 touchdown passes and 1,039 yards rushing in 2006.

White Atlanta Suburbs Push for Secession

ATLANTA Jan 23, 2007 (AP)— A potentially explosive dispute in the City Too Busy to Hate is taking shape over a proposal to break Fulton County in two and split off Atlanta's predominantly white, affluent suburbs to the north from some of the metropolitan area's poorest, black neighborhoods.

Legislation that would allow the suburbs to form their own county, to be called Milton County, was introduced by members of the Georgia Legislature's Republican majority earlier this month.

Supporters say it is a quest for more responsive government in a county with a population greater than that of six states. Opponents say the measure is racially motivated and will pit white against black, rich against poor.

"If it gets to the floor, there will be blood on the walls," warned state Sen. Vincent Fort, an Atlanta Democrat and member of the Legislative Black Caucus who bitterly opposes the plan. Fort added: "As much as you would like to think it's not racial, it's difficult to draw any other conclusion."

The legislation calls for amending the Georgia Constitution to allow the return of Milton County, which succumbed to financial troubles during the Depression and was folded into Fulton County in 1932.

The former Milton County is now mostly white and Republican and one of the most affluent areas in the nation. Atlanta and its southern suburbs are mostly black, are controlled by Democrats and have neighborhoods with some of the highest poverty rates in America. (Buckhead, a fashionable Atlanta neighborhood of clubs, restaurants and mansions, would remain in Fulton County.)

"The only way to fix Fulton County is to dismantle Fulton County," said state Rep. Jan Jones, the plan's chief sponsor. "It's too large, and certainly too dysfunctional, to truly be considered local government."

Jones, a former marketing executive who lives in the Fulton suburb of Alpharetta, cited the county's troubled library and public transit systems and a jail that was taken over by a federal judge because it was filthy and unsafe. He denied the move is racially motivated.

Don Petree, the 62-year-old owner of Don's Hairstyling in Roswell, another northern Fulton suburb, said many of his customers "feel like they're not being taken care of like they should be with the tax dollars they're spending. I think there's some truth to that."

Milton County would have a population of about 300,000, instantly making it Georgia's fifth-largest county.

Residents of north Fulton represent 29 percent of the county's population of 915,000 but pay 42 percent of its property taxes, according to a local taxpayers group. A split would lead to the loss of $193 million in property taxes alone for Fulton County.

About 25 miles to the south in downtown Atlanta, the Rev. J. Allen Milner said he is afraid the tax revenue loss would have a devastating effect on those who need government help the most.

"If you take that money out of their coffers, human services will suffer greatly," said Milner, a black man who runs a homeless mission and is pastor of the Chapel of Christian Love Church.

Critics of a split also worry about the future of Grady Memorial Hospital and the Atlanta area's MARTA commuter-rail system both of which have contracts with the county.

In addition, some warn that a breakup of Fulton could harm Atlanta's international reputation as a progressive city and hurt its appeal as a business, entertainment and convention destination.

While other Southern cities erupted in violence a generation ago, Atlanta came through the civil rights movement with little strife, earning the nickname The City Too Busy to Hate. It is now home to one of the nation's largest black middle-class communities.

"This would send a clear messages to companies around the country that Atlanta may not be as progressive as it would like people to think," Fort said.

The measure would require the support of two-thirds of both the House and Senate. Then it would have to put to a statewide vote. Also, residents of what would become Milton County would have to endorse the plan.

While Republicans have majorities in both chambers, they would need to win over three Democrats in the Senate and 14 in the House to get it passed.

The legislation has support from some of the Legislature's key leaders. Republican House Speaker Glenn Richardson has referred to his top lieutenant, Rep. Mark Burkhalter, as "the member from Milton County."

I heard this also yesterday morning on Fox Sports Radio. They were doing an interview by phone with Jerry Rice and it came up. Its probably one of Ben Maller's rumors that he has posted over at FoxSports.com.

If there's any shred of truth to it on the Falcons side I'd do this in a heartbeat. You can draft your future QB if Shaub doesnt seem the best fit and you get Porter and Moss at worse to sell more Jerseys in Atlanta.

I think Petrino will have his turn with Vick, but I think Falcons management is making a serious error not pulling the plug on this project now. Vick won't get any better as a passer ever.
