Hypnosis - Real or Fake?

So the hypnosis show has got me to really thinking that hypnosis is real. The way that Rider was slamming them out of the park with this insane lines, the insanity if Fez's voice (I'm sorry but that was the Fez we see only when he's drunk).

Thinking of going in to get a tuneup with hypnotherapy too now...

So I saw some doubters out there - why do you think it's fake? How can you explain Friday's show?

Fez being completely insane at times, and just so outside of his comfort level and slamming home runs, and the same with Rider... it was all so surreal.

Like Fez said, it's not a like robotic trance where you do whatever the hypnotist commands, you're just more susceptible to suggestion.

I think people think that hypnosis is like a "Yes, Master" type of thing which is why they don't think it's real.
I was hypnotized once, and it was just sort of like a daydream state and everything else going on was blocked out besides me and what I was doing.

Hypo-therapy to help a person stop smoking, nail biting, etc. is real, but what was done on the show was a parlor trick.

There's no way that was an act. They literally transformed on the drop of a dime. I'm not exactly sure how it works - I think it'd be like being drunk, where you know what you're doing, you're aware of your surroundings and but step out of yourself so to speak and can't control your actions.

For it to be fake, Fez, Rider and co. would have had to be acting and I think - judging from the video as even better evidence - that they're not capable of doing it that well. I'd really like to try it after hearing these shows over the past few years.

to say that hypnosis is fake is like saying that day-dreaming doesn't exist; everyday we all get into a state of trance; we call it "zoning out"; like if you're in class and you start to think about stuff you did and you realize you didn't hear anything the teacher said; only with hypnosis, the hypnotist can focus that mind-set where you will respond and take suggestion (not commands) from the hypnotist

Ive always been skeptical but after that show Im pretty sure its real, everyone was being themselves but totally believing what was supposed to be happening. what creeps me out is that shelly didnt remember anything.
I want a real hypnosis show where they get "esd" in and find out what he was lying about.

People who don't believe its real haven't either been hypnotized themselves or seen it in person...i've seen James Mapes hypnotize hundreds of Uconn students in a huge arena...kids on my dorm floor who would in no way in hell would ever get involved with shit like that were up on stage acting like complete jackasses...i'm a believer

I have been hypnotizing people for about a year now, and I know first hand that it is real. I've been hypnotized before as well (although I don't remember much) and it is really crazy. Any way, if your skeptical, try it. It doesn't work for everyone, but I think the majority of skeptics would be convinced.

one hundred percent? that sure is a definite amount. Do you even know what hypnosis is? Read up some stuff on brain imaging and hypnosis. Studies have been done that show people under hypnosis being told that they are hearing music, and the parts in their brain that are responsible for sound perception start lighting up as though they are actually listening to music. Now you might be thinking that they are just imagining that they are hearing music, but, out of hypnosis when asked to imagine they are hearing music, their brain showed a very different activity.

that's the misconception about hypnosis; hypnosis does not make one a zombie; it just makes the more susceptable to the suggestions of the hypnotist who is able to put them in this trusting-day-dream type of state; notice it's "suggestions" of the hypnotist, not "commands"

That's the whole point, but does that make it fake? There is no way to make someone do something they don't want to, and if they don't want to be hypnotized then they won't be, but I've done it to people. I suggest that they forget their name, they can't say their name no matter how hard they try. I suggest that every time I clap it feels like they're taken a shot of absinth, they are stumbling around and seeing things. Just because someone is accepting what you are suggesting and it is not forced does not mean that it doesn't work. :action-sm

Well, my Dad was a truck driver and I say it's real.

It's sort of like being drunk, you lose inhibitions and it makes things easier to get you to do something you wouldn't normally do, if you're willing.

If you can suspend a little disbelief, just kick back and let The Rider help you live your golden dreams. No reason to look for reason where there is none. Just marvel at this select group of superior entertainers busting their creative asses to take us all away for a few hours at a clip. The real world will be there waiting when the thrill wears off and until the next time The Rider returns to remind us of the simple joys of letting our guards down and surrendering to our silly sides.

We have had "hypnotists" do shows at my school too. I was going to be one of the "subjects", so I played it up. We were all told to play it up. I was fully aware of everything done. I even cued some friends that I would purposely give away that it was fake. When I was "under", I signalled them with my hand very slightly and they knew it was all fake. Don the HYPE-notist put on a great show, but all fake.

Exactly, My mum is a hypotherapist she does the stop smokin and all that kind of shit. I laughed when she tried that shit on me, but when I went to someone else for sleeping, I had the best couple of night sleeps ever.
You have to want to give up smoking, you have to want to be hypnotised.
I don't think 'fake' is the right word for it.

Also there are the hypnotists who do the whole show with people on stage.
yet again it all boils down to "them wanting too, and being relaxed enough" to be hypnotisted.

I can go either way on the subject. I know 4 people who have been hypno'd for smoking or weight loss, 3 of them it worked, 1 it didn't. I have had three different people try it on me, I can't relax enough for it to take hold. But I have also seen it done where it was a total fake, it was obvious that the person was putting on a bit. I think there were some elements of Friday's show that were real, but I'm not buying all of it.
