Midnight Rider = Greatest Radio Bit Ever

I'm going to take some time to give RNF some hand relief, and get this off my chest...

So everyone here hates ESD. Just hates him. He's been the heel for a long time on the show.

So then Dave stupidly shoots off his mouth, puts his job on the line with a vote off. He gets voted off, and has everyone convinced he's gone. Haters are happy, fans are saddened, everyone thinks it's real due to the amazing speech he gives.

Fez feels bad about it, but hey, they have to do it or else they'll look bad right?

So the day comes for the new kid to roll into town. Fez is the one who took the reigns on hiring the new guy... and he shows up.. it's Dave playing the Midnight Rider! A homage to Dusty Rhodes... Obviously Fezzie cooked this up. Black Earl is thrust into a new role as Sapphire, his Sassy Black manager.

Earl is thoroughly annoyed with this new role. All of his whining and complaining, and regular fighting he does with Dave is now completely deflected with the Midnight Rider persona.

Now fast forward to Hypnotism Day. Dave acting as Midnight Rider is hypnotised, he then retains his Midnight Rider persona under hypnosis. He then does a Gossip Report as Dave acting as Midnight Rider acting as Dave arguing with Dave acting as Midnight Rider. Do you see the sheer brilliance of that? And he fucking knocks them out of the park with his amazing lines.

And it's not even done with yet, this bit hasn't been "revealed", Ronnie still "thinks" he is the Midnight Rider. There has to be a big reveal. Dave will be exposed. There's more drama yet to come.

To quote a genius, "anyone who doesn't like this bit is an asshole".

Well they do wink at the listener with lines & calls like this. Someone called in and said "worst bit ever", and Ronnie said, "have you listened to the show before, it's been much worse...". Ron does little asides to the listener from time to time.

I did some research on the real Midnight Rider - apparently one of his bits was using cowbells as weapons. Apparently this was being done long before Ron did, so I think Ron got it from him.

Try to keep in mind alot of the Dave "Haters" here are just buying into the bit as us as the badguys. There are a few people that completely despise him but try not to lump everyone together. My only complaint has ever been when it becomes the Dave show instead of Ron and Fez. Otherwise, he's good in small doses. For those that read the listening threads, you kinda should know by now that there's not actually alot of hate there, but it is hammed up now and then.

Here's the problem: We knew it was a bit, and that Dave was going nowhere. That's why we were beside ourselves. We really wanted him gone, and knew that Ron would only bring him back in a more prominent role.
Shit, I could type out a long-winded synopsis of "Basic Instinct 2," explain it all point by point, and call it genius; but that wouldn't make it a good movie.

It goes way further than that... according to Wikipedia Dusty Rhodes ascended to the top of several National Wrestling Alliance promotions in Florida (where he also wrestled wearing a mask as The Midnight Rider)

and for extra credit Sapphire was a woman a big black woman.

I'm with you BIV. Make no mistake about it, ESD is still a dick of the first degree. The bit is very funny at times, especially when Ron and Fez play off of it. I also very much enjoy the whole Sapphire thing, as it gets under that lazy producer's skin so. One thing I do know, the bit will come to an end, probably sooner than later, likley due to ESD (I mean MR) fucking it up in some way. I can only hope when that day comes that ESD is removed permanently from the XM show. One can dream.......
