It got a little colder last night than I expected, and I didn't leave anything running, so my pipes are now frozen. I have been using a hair dryer on an extension cord for about half an hour now, but to no avail. Any ideas?

Got any space heaters?

Unfortunately, not here, but I'm sure someone at work would have one. Thanks for the idea. I'll still take other advice anyone else has, though.

Turn the heat up in the house, reallly crank it.

Open all cabinets, closets, whatever that contains pipes. This allows the heated air to do its job.

Pray that none of the pipes burst.

I was hoping my gf's landlord left the heat off like he was doing before and went on vacation and I get back to the place with the water flooding teh place. I'd move out her stuff and we'd call the town in and legally break the lease.

No such luck.

To unfreeze the pipes, you have to do it safely. Turn all the faucets on to relieve pressure and the water. This will allow above freezing water to eventually transfer enough calories to the ice inside to allow water to flow properly again. The best advice is to take your time doing this and locate the main water shut off just in case.

Goto Home Depot or Lowes and get the electric pipe heater wire thingy. You wrap a wire around the pipe and heats it up. Even if you are not near the frozen part of the pipe, the heat will eventually get to it. Takes a while.

Thanks, guys. Luckily it warmed up enough while I was at work to thaw them out.

I feel for you man. A bunch of things race through your mind when things like this happen. Our stupid pipes froze, out by the street, a week or so ago. The guy had to come out with a torch to thaw it. (by the meter, if you know what I mean) I'm glad your pipes thawed, and I can't wait for global warming to save all of us from this shit.

how shitty is the insulation at your house?

jesus I live in fucking canada and have NEVER had a frozen pipe and never left anything "Running" ...

ITS 2007 goddammit... Go to home depot and get some pipe insulation wrap and a thermostatically controlled electric pipe wrap for the connection at the foundation, go back 3 feet from the foundation.

it will cost you a little time and about 50 bucks. Way cheaper than a split water pipe.

The nice thing about having a well is that these problems are somewhat eliminated. All of our plumbing is inside our semi-heated crawlspace, or inside heated living space. Only thing outside is about 5' of plastic pipe and that is about 4' below grade. And that is only under pressure when the well pump is running. The check-valve is inside the house.

I'm a financially strapped college student, living in a piece of shit trailer I paid $1200 for. I could give two shits about preventative maintenance, as I will abandon this rusted tin can as soon as I graduate.

Legitimate park. 135 a month, including water and trash. A little expensive for this area, but not too bad.

Damn straght.

I meant that other places around here charge 90 or 100 for lot fees, and 135 was comparatively expensive. I know that that is nothing compared to anything you'll find on the east or west coast.
