This morning, 5AM or so, I get a call and I wake up. My friend tells me that another got into an accident. I rush to the hospital to see him and he looks to be in decent shape. He is sleeping at the moment and the parents talk to the doctor. Then they tell us he will be OK, he just needs some time to rest and heal. We are all relived and all relax and come home around 11AM. Just 2 minutes ago, I get a call saying he didn't make it. Something happened with his brain that went un-noticed by the fucking hospital. Fuck them. Fuck them so hard. I can't believe I lost one of my best friends. This is the most fucked up thing. I don't even know what to think anymore; I am sitting here writing this and tears are coming down my face. I can't believe this happened.

Dude, I'm really very sorry for your loss. That being said, doctors are only human, and the state of medicine is such that sometimes things just happen, and nobody is really to blame. Not to try to lessen your grief, because that's something I would never try to do, but you can't blame the hospital, I'm certain they did everything they could to save your friend. I'm sorry for your loss, man.

Shit happens.

Love it when people think the brain is a part of the body so well known and charted and not without its mysterious physical and network features, some more obscured than others. I am one that hopes medicine is 100% effective at least within the next 500 years, considering we're less than 200 years into it at this point.

So blame the docs for something largely beyond their control.

This missing element to the story: "Something happened with his brain".

And Sknight, I know you two like sniping at each other, but no need to be a prick about this.

Negative, but brain injuries are so well hidden, and sometimes so sudden, that the practitioner can't be blamed.

There's a reason why it's considered so dangerous to use those choke holds on suspects. You know, the ones that cut off the blood flow to the brain and can cause unconciousness in seconds. Even under normal conditions, the brain has little leeway for compromise in its nutrient and air supply, as well as the removal of metabolites.

Funny. Me and BckallyAbortion are pretty good friends. We were talking earlier and he was telling me about how sorry he was about this. Well, we both know how you like to chime in whenever I write my FUs and say something completely unneccesary. Well, take a look.

I agree...

I mean, I feel for the rooskie, sorry about your friend, but shit... don't take it out on the hospital or the doctors, nurses, etc... There are probably a whole line of people ahead of these people in the culpability line in this situation... don't shoot the messengers.

People don't become doctors and nurses because they like watching people die, and they enjoy fucking with grieving friends and relatives. The human body is not a toaster or a clock radio. Every adult should realize that when it comes to matters of human health, there are no guarantees, and every diagnosis a doctor makes is delivered with the unspoken, yet understood, preface of, "To the best of my knowledge..."

Medicine is far from an exact science. It's just a matter of educated guesses and unfortunatly, sometimes their wrong.

Hang in there.

On the bright side... hey, rooskie... what's your brand? I think I'll invest in whatever company makes your vodka of choice... I predict their sales are about to skyrocket.

Nothing dulls the pain like Russian mother's milk.

Seriously though, drink a nostrovia to your friend and stay strong. I'll drink one tonight for him (her?) too.

Yeah, I drank last night. I woke up at 5AM. Then I cam home at 11AM thinking everything was OK (I was told it would be, he just needed a couple days in the hospital) and then posted.

Happens all the time, hospital in sight or not. People die suddenly all the time. We've been doing it for thousands of years and will continue to do so for several centuries.

I've been in this situation... sorry, but there is 'splanation.

Obviously you've never spent any time in a trauma ward/ emergency room.

I've seen people come in laughing and joking, and 30 minutes later you're having "the talk" with their family. I've seen people lucid, answering questions, talking about their pets, kids, mom, what they had for dinner... suddenly stop in mid-sentence like somebody flipped a switch... and then flatline.

Head trauma... aneurysm... a burst blood vessel in the brain. Sometimes they can hide for months. Sometimes it's a matter of days, hours, or even minutes.

It'd be great it we had some kind of Star Trek tricorder that could detect them on the spot, but we just don't... and even if we did, we still probably couldn't fix the problem in a moment's notice. The brain is complicated... miraculously so. If only it were as simple as a set of Legos- something we could fix by just sticking in a new block. But, if that were the case, then this would all be a moot point, because we probably wouldn't have the capacity to feel the pain of losing one of our own...

Our big, wonderful brains... A blessing and a curse.

The question the original post begs is the friend got into an accident again. What was the reasoning behind having yet another accident? Who was at fault for the accident?

looks to me the hospital didnt run enough tests... was he insured?

I think
they do alot more guessing when someone doesnt have insurance.

Or mayby he had a pre existing thing that just needed a bump.. I lost a buddy to an anurizm few months back,, 33 just started feeling sick, hour later died in my friends truck heading to the hosp to get checked out.

I guess sometimes its just you're time.

Im not a doctor dickey. But according to the TV shows a CT Scan, MRI? I think thats satandard head stuff... sounds to me like he was alert enough were they didnt see a need to check his head.

I am also saying there's a lot missing to this story, as in the events that actually transpired inside the hospital and the cause of death, along with the nature of the injury.

Furthermore, we're all five minutes away from death, simply sitting in place with nothing happening to us externally. The brain is so mysterious that this stuff can pop up even with CT's and MRI's.

Believing what TV shows is fantastic, btw. Wish medicine was more like House.

he said one friend told him that another [friend] got in an accident. do details really fucking matter? the kids friend got into an accident, the hospital failed to notice internal injuries and now hes dead, what more do you need to know. I really doubt he started the thread to have a discussion about modern medicine. have some consideration

sorry again kid

Seriously dude, you come into my thread and insult my story. Where do you get off. Angelfuck is right in the above post. My friend Spencer called me and told me Aaron was in an accident.

Since you want the story, fine. He was driving completely sober after having dropped me and Chris off and around 4PM (after school). He went to visit his grandparents and couldnt get out until late (11PM). He was driving along and someone sideswipped him when they cut him off and he his car hit the curb where it flipped twice and landed in a ditch. He was knocked out immediately. He got helped out with only a broken leg and a concusion. He arrived at the hospital, seemed fine when I saw him, and later he died from internal bleeding in the brain which went un-noticed for whatever reason.

I hate you for making me think about this and making me cry once again. You made the pain come back, I hope you are happy. I seriously hope you never loose a good friend, and if you do, don't come looking for compassion and understanding anywhere around here. My friend dies and you insult me and him. Plain sick.

I am requesting a close on this thread because I have had enough of this thread because of you.

And thanks to everyone else, it made me feel better for a while to look at your guys comments.
