Long Story short, I had a bad HD that I thought took a dump on me, went out a while back and bought a new one, then just rencenly went out and bought a new OS since the other one couldnt be transfered and was not legit acording to Microsoft. Now after finally getting someone to pull off the 4GBs of Mp3s I had on there, I atempted to use this other OS (linix) that runs from a CD that this tech guy used and gave to me for free to retrieve some buisness forms and estimates I made for customers. somehow some way, the old HD decides to work. I grab everything that I can in a rush like there is a ticking time bomb about to go off and transfer everything to DVDs. Now I have no more use for anything on this HD. My comp wont read it on an external USB drive, nor will it even boot when the new HD is connected. What I want to do is format the HD while its being used, if you know what the hell I mean. Will anything happen after I format it, or will I have to restart the comp and once it boots up it will show that there is no HD connected.

if you boot up the computer and the hardrive boots than plug the old hard drive into the new os(linix) and through the existing tower and see if you can boot it up. it should in turn fire up the tower which in turn will send a message to the os (linix) drive and back out the old drive that says:
YOUR FUCKED!!!

1814 of course
i'm pretty sure if you have an extra hard drive with an os installed just slave the HD you want to format and then do what Glenn Dandy says.

Is there a OS installed on your new HD or are you still running the version of Linux that runs off a CD?
