Tim Hardaway: 'I Hate Gay People'

(CBS4) MIAMI Former Miami Heat superstar Tim Hardaway told a local sports radio show that he hates gay people.

Hardaway made the comments while he was being interviewed by Dan Le Batard on 790 the Ticket Wednesday afternoon.

The five time All Star was asked how he would deal with a gay teammate.

First of all I wouldnt want him on my team, said Hardaway. Second of all, if he was on my team I would really distance myself from him because I dont think thats right and I dont think he should be in the locker room when were in the locker room.

Le Batard took Hardaway to task, pointing out that his comments were flatly homophobic and bigoted, but that only seemed to stir up the former point guard.

Well, you know, I hate gay people, Hardaway said in response to Le Batard. I let it be known I dont like gay people. I dont like to be around gay people. Im homophobic. It shouldnt be in the world, in the United States, I dont like it.

Hardaways comments come on the heels of a groundbreaking revelation made by former player John Amaechi, who became the first professional basketball player to openly identify himself as gay.

Amaechi became only the sixth male atlhlete from one of the four major American sports (NBA,MLB,NFL,NHL) to admit he is gay.

Former NFL running back David Kopay , offensive lineman Roy Simmons and defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo just recently came out.

Glenn Burke, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland Athletics in the 1970s, and Billy Bean, a utility player in the 1980s and 1990s, have also come out.

No player has ever publicly admitted to being gay while currently playing for one of the four major sports.

Is it really a bad comment? Who would want fags eying up their cocks in the shower?

The Gays should form their own basketball league, like the broads did.

FBA maybe.

Good for him.

Yeah, there's a shitload of people who aren't going to like what he had to say, but that's a dose of honesty you're rarely going to see from someone.

It's refreshing to see somebody actually speak their mind and not sugarcoat it for the media. I'm sure that the tune would be different if he was still playing in the league, though.

PC bullshit baiting question.. Why do you ask a question if the awnser could go wrong. I mean so the interviewer asks him the question and instead of Hardaway saying its fine and all the shit by the book he really gave an honest awnser. What sucks is Hardaway will start the apology trail and probably check himself into rehab/counseling to try and make this go away. Even with the Kramer thing i mean do you have to like what he said no but you have to let him say it..

I just watched the "coverage" of this on the news. Pretty much it was the sports guy being SOOOO disappointed in Tim Hardaway, he refused to report it. Good job assfuck... heaven forbid you even do your job. This is what I get for moving to the bay area.

Kinda A misleading title.
My first thought was Oh my god! Lil' Penny is dead. Then I remembered what Hardaway it was and didn't care.
I don't care that he says whatever he wants, I just love the people who think that if there's a gay guy in your locker room he's got to want to just lick up and down your cock, like he's just going to walk up to you with his cheeks spread open.

Yeah, that always made me laugh as well. People assume that all gay people want them. Fucking conceited. LOL.

On a side note, I agree about how I like when people are not PC and speak their minds. (I think any fan of O&A are probably the same). I also agree that if a guy came out while playing it would probably be best for both sides if he would shower elsewhere. But discrimination is discrimination. You have a right to feel what you want but there is no difference between this and saying you don't want to work with Chinese, Catholics, or people who had sex before marriage. None of these things have a barring on your job performance.

So again, bravo for speaking his mind but he is still a prejudicial douche.

Tim Hardaway officially wins for most insincere apology of all time.

"Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that," he said. "That was my mistake."

On some level, although I think it's ridiculous and misguided, I can appreciate someone who is willing to come out and say they wouldn't want a gay teammate, because they are being honest when they have to know they are going to get shit on by the media.

He had the right to say what he said, people who disagree have the right to criticize and David Stern had the right to say Hardaway will never represent the NBA again.

There is a difference when it comes to sex and sexuality and you know it. Trying to convince me that a gay man would not be sexually aroused when looking at other male athletes in the shower is like trying to tell me a straight man would not be hot and bothered if showering with female athletes.
OF COURSE HE WOULD.
That is a man for you, gay or straight.

NBA Commissioner David Stern, upon learning of the remarks Wednesday, removed Hardaway from subsequent league-related appearances. "It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," Stern said in a statement to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

I guess Scotch nailed it on the head. Thank god the media doesn't know that much about Timmy. I can hear the goofy news stories now "Tim Hardaway wont CROSS OVER to the other side."

Oh my god! Lil' Penny is dead.

Lil' Penny's been dead for years, welcome to 2007.

Though I hate ******* who hate being hated even though they are so hatable. What he said was that he hated gay people and hated being around them. I defend his right to feel that way and my right to do the same. He didm't preach hate, just his own personal feelings. I hate ******* and hate being around them because they make me uncomfortable. I don't burn crosses in front of their houses or lynch them. So it's not harmful or hate speech,. It's just a feeling.

at least he said that "He shouldn't have said anything" instead of apologizing by saying, "I don't feel that way"

How come nobody talks about this guy's freedom of speech. The media is just so ridiculous it make me sick. Think about, if someone came out and was pro gay or bashing hetero sexuals or catholics, all we hear is that they have a right to say what they want.

Well when someone comes out and says something that the left does not agree with the person gets crucified.

The guy does not want a gay team mate, so what. KIf he was playing he really would not have much of a choice. He may be misguided, but he has that right, just like Rosie, Spike Lee or any other sort of minority has to spit their left wing liberal crap as well.

Think about it. Its OK to bash the president, but not some fag basketball player.

Yes, he has a right to his opinion. But people also have a right not to like it. Society just tends to not like opinions that are based in discrimination. He is not going to jail because he does have a right to his opinion but the NBA also has a right to ban him from their operations for having a discriminatory stance against a group.

Also, it is ok to bash a person for their acts. But it is not ok to bash a person for how they were born. That is discrimination. It is also the difference between bashing a president for what he does and bashing a homosexual for being gay.

Oh get the fuck out of hear with "the way you are born" shit.

My point is the left always cries the freedom of speech issue and our freedoms this, but when someone has a different, radical opinion, they smash him/her/it.

They go after sponsors, they try to make the persons life a living hell. They can never say "well that is his misinformed opinion".

They are two faced cunts.

I will agree with you on that point. The left is in fact judgmental. They are into freedom of speech unless it goes against what they say. Good point.

As far as the sponsors, that has nothing to do with anything but money. Gays buy soda too. Trust me, if burning crosses on peoples front porch were financially advantageous they would do it.

Not to turn this into being Gay is a choice issue, but it really is the way you are born. I am guessing you are heterosexual. Could you decide to be Gay tomorrow if you wanted? I doubt it.

Anyway, I could care less what Tim Hardaway thinks. Having followed his career and listened to other interviews they guy is an idiot. This story will go away soon enough...

I think he does still care about the money. While he is not playing, there are things like NBA Events he would like VIP passes for, NBA sponsored celebrity cruises, coaching opportunities, etc...
