So who's Boston's closer this year? Since you're taking the most successful closer in recent RedSox history and making him a starter. I know he was originally a starter, but the kid dominated the 9th inning last year.

Theyre still undecided.
It will probably Joel Piniero.
Im hoping the Yanks dont give Rivera the 'respect' he deserves and he can move on next year like he said...

Saw him in Japan when he was a "go-lu-den loo-kee"; don't remember him being that thick. Then again, he is doing Asahi commercials in Japan. Asahis are too good to drink just one.
Still, the Sox are in good shape. They sign Matsuzaka. And Julio Lugo. Even J.D. Drew will turn out alright.
My A's sign broke-down Piazza. And a guy I thought was retired, Shannon Stewart. And a guy I thought was dead, Alan Embree.
Love your Sox. Dice-K can't possibly give up more dingers than Beckett, can he?

Tavarez, who is good friends with Ramírez, made the comment to Dan Roche of WBZ-TV. As long as Manny has such a valid reason, the Red Sox probably won't have much of a problem with him missing the first week of camp. Sox Sign Pena for 1 Year:
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that the club has agreed to terms with outfielder Wily Mo Pena on a one-year contract for the 2007 season. No terms were disclosed.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.
Pena, who was acquired from Cincinnati on March 20, 2006, batted .301 with 11 homers and 42 RBI in 84 games with Boston in 2006. He was on the disabled list from May 28-July 18 with a fractured hamate bone in his left wrist.
The agreement was reached prior to Pena's scheduled salary arbitration hearing today in Phoenix, Arizona. With today's agreement, the Red Sox have signed all of their players who were eligible for arbitration.
Red Sox pitchers and catchers report today to the team's spring training complex in Fort Myers. The players will undergo physicals and conditioning on Saturday with the first workout scheduled for Sunday

Shill to test free agent market:
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It took a roughly three-minute meeting between Red Sox ace Curt Schilling and general manager Theo Epstein to determine that a contract extension for 2008 was not going to happen at this time.
And instead of letting people wonder where things stand, Schilling made it clear by announcing his plans to become a free agent following the 2007 season.
Schilling, who serves as his own agent, said that he has no interest in talking with the Red Sox during the season and, at this time, the Sox simply weren't comfortable guaranteeing an extension to a pitcher who will be 41 next season.
The right-hander broke the news during a Thursday morning radio interview with WEEI-850 AM and then spoke with the rest of the media following the team's workout.
"It's disappointing," said Schilling. "But I said earlier, that's the way it works sometimes. It's a business, and I get that. I woke up, the sun came up today and I was getting after it today."
Schilling and Epstein had their brief meeting on Wednesday.
"We kind of met yesterday just to wrap up negotiations," said Epstein. "We have a tremendous amount of respect for Curt -- always have, always will. It doesn't change how we feel about him, it doesn't change our expectations for him, it doesn't change his place in the organization. It simply wasn't the right time for us to enter into a guaranteed agreement for 2008."
Age was clearly the cause for the impasse. Still, Epstein expressed hope that this won't be Schilling's final season in Boston.
"Well, there's a bit of a sliding scale based on age. The deeper you go into your career, I think the more hesitant the club might be to guarantee salary years in advance," said Epstein. "Curt is going to be 41. At that age, we get a little more conservative. It doesn't mean we don't want him back. I have all the confidence in the world that if Curt wants to pitch in 2008 and he's still pitching effectively, as I expect he will, that we'll find a way to keep him in a Red Sox uniform.
"It doesn't make sense from a business standpoint right now to guarantee that kind of money a year in advance for a 41-year-old. He's our No. 1, he's our Opening Day starter, we couldn't be happier about that."
Ownership, which was kept in the loop during the negotiations, also still is optimistic that a resolution could be worked out for 2008.

"My feeling is that Curt Schilling will end his career as a Red Sox player," said Red Sox chairman Tom Werner. "He's very proud, and I think if he pitches as well as he expects to pitch this year, of course we'll make a deal for him for next year.
"Somebody said, 'Are you panicking that he is going to file for free agency?' Not at all, because I believe we have shown respect for Curt and we are going to sit down with him at some point and work out a contract if he wants to pitch next year. We're just not going to do it in February."
Schilling, who will make a base salary of $13 million this season, indicated in recent weeks that he'd be looking for roughly the same figure in an extension. He said that financial parameters were discussed during some of his informal discussions with the team in recent weeks.
"Oh, absolutely," said Schilling. "That was the first discussion we had. And it was something I was under the impression was fine for everybody and then there was a change in direction."
Still, Epstein was comfortable with the way things ended between the sides.
"Very professional," said Epstein. "He understood. I think he's disappointed, but Curt said, and I believe him, that it won't affect his preparation or his performance one bit. He's never been driven by contracts. That's not what he's all about. Despite the fact he's going to file for free agency, we'll have an opportunity to talk."
As recently as a month ago, Schilling was supposed to be a retired player in 2008. But Schilling, after discussions with his wife and children, announced in late January that he had changed his mind. Shortly thereafter, he expressed hope that he could work out a deal with the Red Sox, but wanted it to be done by Opening Day.
Manager Terry Francona, who has been around Schilling longer than anyone else connected with the Red Sox, did not seem all that concerned with Thursday's news.
"He was also going to retire," quipped Francona. "You know what I'm saying. Things change. It's the business side that I'm glad I don't have to deal with. The thing that I am thankful for or grateful for is, regardless of whether he's signed for 10 years or one month, he will pitch like he's always pitched and he'll give you everything he has."
Schilling has been traded five times in his career, but has never been a free agent.
While vowing that he won't be distracted, Schilling also said his contract status won't alter his motivation.
"The three best years of my career, '97, 2001 and 2004, were all first year of multiyear contracts," said Schilling. "I don't pitch for contracts. I pitch for the reasons that I love playing the game."
The Red Sox acquired the 40-year-old right-hander from Arizona in a trade following the 2003 season. He was immediately signed to a three-year contract through 2006 with a vesting option for this season.
Schilling was 15-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 2006.
While he's certainly become entrenched in the Boston community since joining the Red Sox, Schilling indicates that his current team won't get any special treatment when he becomes a free agent.
"I had a long talk with [Schilling's wife] Shonda last night, and if it doesn't work out, then the family is OK with that," said Schilling.
:( Doesnt surprise me though. Sounds like he may have run his course with the BoSox.

it doesn't look like he'll be back, but I wouldn't rule anything out. It's ok anyway, his 13mil off the booke, clement's 9, Lowell 7, hopefully Timlin 3 , they'll have some money to throw around without going over the lux tax. Need a 3b, not sure who'll be out there, but they'll be in good shape. Plus they still have a few pitchers on the way, who are looking pretty good, Buckholz, Bard. Beckett, Dice-K, Paps and Lester looks pretty solid, 2 guys making the minimum for a few years, and Beckett and Mats for about 10m puts them in good position.

Just read Ramirez showed up at camp....Early!
I'm impressed.
Just saw this on foxsports too:
The Rockies would listen if the Red Sox wanted to revive Manny Ramirez-for-Todd Helton discussions, but such a move would make little sense for the Sox unless they absolutely, positively decided that they no longer could tolerate Ramirez.
Which, at this point, would be ridiculous.
If the Sox traded Ramirez for Helton, their principal power — David Ortiz, J.D. Drew and perhaps Helton — would be left-handed. Their top right-handed power hitters would be Mike Lowell, Wily Mo Pena and switch-hitter Jason Varitek. Good luck protecting Big Papi.
Plain and simple, Ramirez is a vital weapon in the AL East. The Yankees (Andy Pettitte, Kei Igawa), Orioles (Erik Bedard, Adam Loewen) and Devil Rays (Scott Kazmir, Casey Fossum) all could feature two left-handed starters. The Blue Jays have one lefty starter (Gustavo Chacin) and a lefty closer (B.J. Ryan.).
As usual, the Red Sox just need to suck it up with Ramirez, and for as long as possible. As Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald points out, the Sox's $20 million club options on Ramirez in 2009 and '10 will look more and more attractive in an inflated market.

Some notes on Dice K's Debut:
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- With the exception of one pitch -- the first one he threw -- the grand opening of Daisuke Matsuzaka was an enticing preview of what the Red Sox hope to see throughout 2007.
Matsuzaka, as advertised, displayed a wide arsenal of pitches in mowing down six of the seven Boston College hitters he faced on Friday night at City of Palms Park.
In a prelude to his official exhibition season debut, which will take place on Tuesday at Jupiter against the Marlins, Matsuzaka threw 25 pitches -- 19 of them for strikes. He allowed one hit over two innings and struck out three.

FORT MYERS - The closer situation has left Red Sox [team stats] fans tossing and turning at night. The Sox are wrestling with it, too, because it’s a problem that hasn’t been resolved during the first month of spring training.
Not to worry. If there isn’t a feasible solution, if the assembled candidates continue to be uninspiring, if nothing happens on the trade front, there remains the best fallback plan on the planet.
Jonathan Papelbon may have stated earlier in camp that he always wanted to be a starter, and is 100 percent focused and committed to taking the ball every fifth day. He may have fed us the benefits of a starter’s routine, and the pluses for his unstable shoulder.
Talking with Papelbon yesterday, however, it sure sounds as though he’s ready to don the cape and come to the rescue if the need arises.
“My door is always open to better a ballclub. That’s what it boils down to. If it betters a ballclub, my door is open, let’s talk about it, figure it out,” Papelbon said when asked if he would listen to a plea to return to the role in which he dominated last season. “For me, I’m going to do what’s best for the team. If they go out and get somebody, or somebody finally steps up, and says, ‘Hey, I want this role’ . . . then we go about our business, and everyone’s happy.
“If not, then we’ve got to figure something out. Whether I go back there (to the bullpen) or whether I stay starting and wait until the All-Star break, and do something then, we’ll have to see. It’s not an easy decision.”
Since being shut down with shoulder tenderness last September, it’s been assumed the best route to ensure Papelbon’s long-term health is to switch to the regular routine of a starter, over the erratic workload of a closer.
At least, that’s what the Sox medical personnel outlined as the rationale behind his move into the starting rotation.
Yesterday, Papelbon said his arm wouldn’t be jeopardized performing either role, thanks to his strengthening program, which he’s following diligently.
“I’ve talked to a million doctors. For me, it wouldn’t matter what I do, start or close,” he said. “My shoulder is still going to stay healthy because I’m going to stay on my program and do what it takes, no matter what kind of pitching I do. I’m going to keep my arm healthy. So, (my role) is kind of irrelevant.”
Even Sox general manager Theo Epstein offered another interesting take yesterday, saying that he wouldn’t put the term “never” on the right-hander becoming a closer again.
“The most important thing with Jon is his health. We’ve been really pleasantly surprised at how strong his shoulder is,” Epstein said. “If you took a handful of the strongest shoulders in camp, he’d be on that list, which is unbelievable progress for him. (Closing) is obviously something he can do extremely well. We’d never rule it out for the long term.”
Papelbon, who had 35 saves and a microscopic 0.92 ERA last season as a rookie, has even thought about the changes he’d have to make if he jumped back into the role.
“If I do go out and close, there will be no four days in a row, five days in a row,” he said. “I have to have a better understanding with Tito (Francona) when I’m going to come in and pitch. I’m not going to come in and pitch the eighth and ninth. There’s going to have to be some regulations we’re going to have to follow in order to keep me healthy. But we’re still at the point where we haven’t figured it out if I’m going back to close yet.”
As it stands, Mike Timlin [stats] (strained oblique) is on the disabled list at least until the Sox home opener April 10. Of the remaining candidates, Brendan Donnelly appears slotted for a setup role, which leaves either Julian Tavarez or Joel Pineiro, who closed out Tuesday’s win over Minnesota, to do the job until Epstein makes a move, or decides to bring his lights-out closer back to life.
As for replacing Papelbon in the fourth slot in the rotation, Kyle Snyder [stats] could assume that role, or Jon Lester [stats] might emerge as the man down the road.
“Yeah, the window’s still open,” Papelbon said of his former job. “It doesn’t matter to me. We just haven’t crossed that bridge yet.”

Right off the Sox site:
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Red Sox announced a resolution to their much-discussed closer dilemma with a retro decision following Thursday's exhibition game against the Phillies: Jonathan Papelbon will return to the role he was so masterful in a year ago.
Julian Tavarez, who did a solid job in the rotation when given the chance in September, will take Papelbon's starting slot.
This, after a winter and spring in which the Red Sox and Papelbon both said numerous times that the hard-throwing right-hander would go into the season as a starting pitcher.
The reason Papelbon was moved out of the closer's role in the first place was for health reasons. Papelbon suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder on Sept. 1, 2006. Shortly thereafter, the Red Sox, citing advice from the medical staff, announced that Papelbon would be best suited, at least in the short term, to go back to starting.
With nobody emerging in a wide-open closing derby and Mike Timlin ticketed to start the season on the disabled list, perhaps the Red Sox got the medical clearance necessary to move Papelbon back to the bullpen.
The Red Sox drafted Papelbon as a starter in 2003. Until last spring, that was how the club viewed him for the long-term.
But things changed last Spring Training, when Papelbon impressed the brass so much in relief that he supplanted Keith Foulke as the closer in the third game of the 2006 season.
Papelbon responded by pitching his way on to the American League All-Star team. He finished the year 4-2 with an 0.92 ERA, which was the eighth-lowest in Major League history among pitchers with at least 50 innings.
Papelbon converted his first 20 save opportunities of the season and was 35-for-41 overall.
As for Tavarez, he seemed to become reinvigorated when Francona moved him to the rotation in September. The righty went 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA in six starts. He fired a complete game, 7-1 victory at Toronto on Sept. 22.
Tavarez, along with Timlin, Joel Pineiro and Brendan Donnelly, had been viewed as the four closing candidates for Opening Day. But all that changed with Thursday's announcement.
"If you ask me what I want to be, I'll tell you I want to be a starter because at least I know what day I'm going to pitch," Tavarez said in February. "I've always been thinking I wanted to be a starter since I started my career in 1992. I was a starter in the Minor Leagues also. If you leave it to me, I'd say I want to be a starter."
He now apparently has his wish, thanks to a game of role reversal with Papelbon.
Both pitchers seemed to be gearing up for their new -- and old -- roles on Thursday. Tavarez pitched 3 2/3 innings in a Minor League game back in Fort Myers, scattering four hits and allowing no runs while striking out four. He threw 63 pitches.
Papelbon worked in relief of Tim Wakefield in Boston's game against the Phillies.
Hm. Still kinda shaky on Tavarez, but if he pitches like he did last fall, he should do alright in the #5 slot.

Still kinda shaky on Tavarez, but if he pitches like he did last fall, he should do alright in the #5 slot.yeah, he looked good last fall as a SP, but he's just there until they feel comfy that Lester is fully recovered. I think they give Lester 1 month 5-6 starts and re-evaluate, if he's pitching good he'll be up.

One of the things that worries me is no left handed starter....[/quote]I have a feeling by May we'll see Lester in the rotation, at least I hope, Tavarez looked ok as a starter at the end of the year, but I still don't trust him. Lester probably gets 5 starts and if he's ok physically he'll be up. Cant fucking wait, along with the Sox, I'm curious to see Alex Gordon play for the Royals, been hearing alot about this kid.

Well, when you share a division with a team like the Yanks, they are the important ones.
If he can't beat the Yanks, they don't have a shot at the division. Simple as that.
I thought he looked great though. My only real concern with him is how he'll hold up. It's a long season and the rotation is a lot shorter than he's used to.

Wake looked pretty decent today. With a team that has the offensive power that Boston does, you have to think holding an opposing team to 2 runs is enough for a win.
Ortiz is 3-25 and was terrible in Spring ball. Is Koko starting to slip?
Manny hasn't done a lot for the Sox either.
I can't stand when they lose to shitty teams that they should be beating. On paper, they should be 4-0 right now!

I cant say much for Ortiz, but I know the past two seasons, Manny has been slow out the gate....he ALWAYS picks it up so I have faith there.
I think once Ortiz gets into a groove, he'll be putting up his usual numbers.

Ortiz put on like 20lbs of muscle this offseason. It worries me that it is screwing up his swing.

not to mention not having to overwork Papelbon in the early going. last few wins have been big. Blowing the game open in the bottom of the 8th the other day was huge, Paps didn't have to come back out. Drew is off to a nice start, as is Lugo, which is key with the fans. But, this weekend is big, playing in Skydome this week, they don't have to worry about any weather, so they'll have Schilling-Beckett-Dice K against the Yankees this weekend. Not sure what their starters will be like either with 3 of them on the DL.

You guys paid 100 million dollars for an unproven pitcher just so your rotation wouldnt be a laughing stock.

And your point is what?
Even with your starting pitchers, the Yankee rotation is weak this season. You have 2 decent starters and a thin bullpen. Then what?
As far as Petite coming in, are the fans going to be on the Yankee forum next weak complaining because his arm is shot? Not a smart move to kill yourself (your only healthy starting pitcher) over the 18th game of the season.
As far as Dice K goes, I'm not very impressed with him so you won't see me waving a Japanese flag anytime soon.

Please don't tell me that you have any faith in Pavano. I respect you as someone who knows his shit, but that sounds like a typical "Homer" comment to me...
I dont have faith in Pavano but if he stops being such a pussy and getting hurt all the time, i think he would be much better then Karstens.
Im sure you didnt have a whole lot of faith in beckett after last season but hes seems to turn a corner. Im just saying that there is a chance for Carl to do that.

Fair enough.
I do have some faith in Beckett but if he has another season as he did last year, I will flush him.
IMO, Pavano had his chance to do something, anything in NY and he has done nothing but dissapoint.
On a related point, Wang is the future. I saw him pitch 3 times last season, one of which was the blowout at Fenway in August. He is the real deal.

Well I wouldn't get wound up if we took the series 2 games to 1,,,but we swept em' first time in SEVENTEEN YEARS at Fenway,,,also four home runs in a row= another record:D AND come on, do you see the Yankees pitching staff as a whole (not just the starters) as a "threat", they are screwed,,,,Yea it's early in the season but come on, there hoping Clemens will come out there to help out later this season HAHAHA good fucking luck with that guy even if they do get em':p

Shows the class of a Sox fan. What's next, he gonna pimp out his sister? ;)
Other than the wins, I wouldn't be too proud for either side. Both starting pitching staffs were getting clobbered, except for Pettite and Wright was a single A pitcher so I'm not too concerned for him but it said a lot for both sides hitting. Those balls were being tattooed.

Alright, enough with the "Classless" Sox fan routine, we get it. Yankee fans think all Red Sox fans are classless because they act like fucking animals when they win. What's new?!
As far as pitching goes, I was pretty happy with some Aspects of the Red Sox pitching.
The biggest surprise to me in the series though was the kid Wright from yesterday. Yes, he did get clobbered in 1 inning but up until that point, he was doing a pretty good job at keeping probably one of, if not the most powerful offenses in check. I wouldn't be surprised to see him again real soon...

I am so sick of the "classless Sox Fan" thing. I have been to Yankee stadium and seen them set opposing teams merchandise on fire cause you aren't supposed to be there wearing it. Fuck that, Yankee fans are just as classless.
I was a lil disappointed in Dice K, I thought he would hold up better... but other than that, it wasn't that bad. Its what happens when you get 2 of the best offenses in baseball together... they just hit the shit out of each other. Happily, our offense outlasted yours... and the difference in any close game between the Yanks and Sox will be the 'Pen... and I think you have to give the edge to Paplebon right now...

x2. But it will never go away.
At least between these two teams.
I've been to Sox games all over.
The most fun I had was in Arizona when the played the Diamondbacks.
Almost more Sox fans there than D'backs fans. But it was a great atmosphere. A lot of ballbustin among the fans in our section, but it was all in good humor and fun.
Same thing when I go to Cleveland when they play the Sox.

I went to Salem, Mass. on Halloween a few years back (before Sox WS win )and I talked to a lot of Sox fans, we got along well and one of the fans dressed up with a noose hanging around his neck. I would never start shit with any other fan, it's just a friggin game. OK, ours is war but, you know.

Classless sox fans LOL compared to who Yankee fans:rolleyes: The sox and yanks fans are the most passionate in the game and sometimes both sides get out of hand, without the yankees and red sox baseball would suck PERIOD.
Very much upset about how there playing against the Jay's, I mean come on,,,ERRORS, shitty pitching, manny being a douch,,,just got off a great series with the yanks don't let your fucking guard down dem' Canadians are good this year.
(Baltimore vs Sox is always fun, but my cousin called from a Seattle game and told me to listen,,,huge "lets go red sox" cheer, sounded like they were in Fenway)

I'm not. Great series against the Yanks...5 wins in a row...
Toronto ALWAYS has their number.
Kind of like the Devil Rays with the Yanks. Their pitching is shitting the bed. Manny...well....he's being Manny. He'll get hot eventually. Usually takes him a few months haha. But whats up with the fucking Errors! Holy christ.
At least Lowell is hot.
And being a Sox fan....I love Fenway. It may be the dirtiest, oldest park, but I wouldnt want to watch a game anywhere else. One of my best friends is a Yankees fan. Used to live in Boston. Said he's never had more fun at a game than at Fenway when the Sox played the Yankees.

Just came across this nonsense:
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's reputation was the target of an attempted hit from, of all places, the Orioles' television broadcasting booth. Gary Thorne, who does play-by-play of Orioles games on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and has a solid national reputation, having done lots of work for ESPN, brought up the saga of Schilling's bloody sock during last night's telecast, according to the BOSTON GLOBE.
Thorne said on the air, while the Orioles were batting in the fifth, that he'd been told by Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli that was not blood, but paint, on the sock Schilling wore during Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees. It was done for the public relations effect, Thorne said.
"The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking," Thorne said to broadcast partner Jim Palmer, the Hall of Fame pitcher, in a conversation that had begun with a discussion of Schilling's blog.
"Nah," Thorne said. "It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR. Two-ball, two-strike count."
Palmer: "Yeah, that was the 2004 World Series [sic]." Thorne: "Yeah."
During a break two innings later, Thorne confirmed that's what he said, and that Mirabelli had told him so in a conversation "a couple of years ago."
"Go ask him [Mirabelli]," Thorne said.
Mirabelli was shocked, then angry, when relayed Thorne's comments.
"What? Are you kidding me? He's [expletive] lying. A straight lie," Mirabelli said. "I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood."
WHY THE FUCK is this even an issue?

NEW YORK -- Following his roughest inning as a member of the Red Sox, Daisuke Matsuzaka ducked through the dugout tunnel at Yankee Stadium, cooled off in the comfort of the clubhouse and came back sleeveless for the first time all night.
Just like that, Matsuzaka went into no-sweat mode, setting down the final six batters he faced en route to a topsy-turvy 11-4 victory over the Yankees on Friday night.
Pitching atop the mound at historic Yankee Stadium for the first time, Matsuzaka (six innings, five hits, four runs, four walks, seven strikeouts) ultimately prevailed, adding to the ongoing woes of the Yankees, who have now lost seven in a row.
As for the 15-7 Sox, they just keeping chugging along. Manager Terry Francona's first-place team has won eight of 10, including four in a row against their rivals from the Bronx.
But Andy Pettitte (4 2/3 innings, six hits, five runs, five walks, five strikeouts) had a similar nightmare for the Yankees in the top of the fifth, only he couldn't complete the inning. The Red Sox scored three to go back on top, and stayed there the rest of the night. Aside from the resiliency of Matsuzaka, the other strength for the Sox was the top of the order. Leadoff man Julio Lugo was a pest all night to the Yankees, going 3-for-4 with three runs, a homer, three RBIs and two stolen bases. No. 2 hitter Kevin Youkilis was 2-for-4 with a walk, a homer, two runs and two RBIs.

Can't wait till Manny starts hitting. How good is the other Jap pickup looking about now? Clemens coming back? You would think he would want to come back to a winning team....NEW YORK -- Unlike his fellow countryman, whose every step had been followed from the Far East to Red Sox Nation, Hideki Okajima arrived in relative anonymity. Lost in the shadow of Daisuke Matsuzaka, Okajima cutely embraced that role with what probably ranked as the quote of Spring Training from any Red Sox player.
"I'm willing to be a hero in the dark," said Okajima.
It was a great statement in theory. But the light is now shining brightly on the lefty reliever, who, in April gained more trust from manager Terry Francona than any Red Sox reliever but Jonathan Papelbon.
Okajima, contrary to some early misinformed speculation, did not come to Boston to be Matsuzaka's companion. In fact, the two did not even know each other until they became teammates this spring.
The Red Sox signed Okajima as a free agent for the sole reason that they felt he could be a key player in their bullpen.
And with the exception of one pitch -- his first in the Major Leagues which was promptly deposited over the wall by Royals catcher John Buck -- Okajima has been just that.
Since that Opening Day indignity, Okajima -- who has an ERA of 0.71 -- has not been touched. He brings a string of 11 consecutive scoreless outings into Tuesday night's game against the A's at Fenway Park.
Perhaps Okajima has Buck to thank for all the success that has come his way over the last few weeks. "When I gave up the home run to him, I thought, 'Wow, Major League batters are really great.' Because of that one pitch, now I've been able to get this far," said Okajima. "That pitch was a good chance for me to learn what I need to do to have success in the Major Leagues. It made me rethink what way I can pitch in the United States and be successful. The result of that is where I am and how I'm pitching."

So far so good brotha. He's been lights out. I like knowing that teams have a feelig when they see Paps coming out of the Pen, its essentially over. Having Okajima pitching like this....it'd be great to get the same feeling from him as a set up man.

Honestly, I'd say Dice-K. Beckett is back to old (Marlin) form, Schill & Wake have the high pressure experience. I'd say Dice-K would still be too green (or yellow, har har) for playoff pitching. But then again, I'm wrong about a lot of things. :action-sm

Guess Who's Atop the MLB Power Rankings:
Manny Ramirez connects for an opposite-field homer against the Yankees. The fact that he’s showing power the other way may mean he’s finally out of his funk. Another rough outing for Dice-K raises his 2007 ERA to 4.36. Peripherals are strong, so he figures to improve going forward. Jon Lester could rejoin the Boston rotation by the end of the week. Considering how poorly Julian Tavarez is faring as the fifth starter, that can’t happen soon enough.
Good news to hear Lester may be on his way up soon.

No kidding. I can't wait to see Lester again and get rid of Tavarez. He didn't have a bad last outing... but I am excited to see what Lester can do with a full season, healthy.
We shall see if it continues tonight. I am really excited about this season, so far so good, but then again, it's only April, but the feeling I am gettin' from this team is allllll good.

1 bad pitch what can you say... happens to the best. 7-1 for saves is still good.
And dansey i hope to see lester too soon. I like Tavarez but not as a starter, he is a great mid guy

nice win tonight, still not much offensive support for Wake, but he made it work. Gotta love Cora, what a solid ballplayer. Tomorrow could be rough, Julian vs Johan, can he beat another ace?

Thats about par for the course these days. Which stinks, because Wake has had some real good quality starts.

santana hasn't been his lefty pedro self so far this year.
his numbers are generally about the same, but he's looked mortal at times. hopefully this game doesn't end up like the "cy igawa" start last weekend.

all we need is an explosion of sox hitting and all will be well,,,Ortiz and Manny hopefully will BOTH step up topday,,,,
Those "dome games" are weird it's kinda like a movie set, not a fan of domes at all!
(1-2 with a 7.58era VS 3-2 with a 3.60era):( Time to step it up and turn it up a notch,,,if we win this one its twenty, a huge twenty,,,I smell an upset

There isn't a lot of options for them right now. They are struggling and their pitching staff is weak. He isn't going to get them to the promise land but he will keep them afloat this year.

heh.
$28mil...you can have him.
So he can come in and pitch 5 innings, then have the bull pen fall apart.
HOnestly, I would have loved to see him back in Boston. But money talks. And the Yankees need him more than I do.
Oh well, I'm over it already :action-sm

Keep in mind that it's 28 million for the year. He will be getting a Pro-Rated contract which should equal around $19 Million.
Still more than he's worth though...

anybody catch what ortiz said in the globe today about ROIDS??? Something to the effect that he isn't sure if he had taken steroids or illegal substances in his youth, he bought stuff at the gnc in his home country where the rules are different and used it (to me that means number one he did it years ago and two he didn't do it on purpose,,hope that's true)
anyway tonight should be another win! we got Becket 6-0! 2.72 vs some tool lol:icon_bigg ZAMBRANO

Report: Ortiz not sure if he took steroids
May 8, 2007
BOSTON (TICKER) -- It appears Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is not sure if he has taken steroids.
Ortiz told the Boston Herald that he could not say definitively if he had ever used performance-enhancing drugs in the past. The burly designated hitter also said that if he did, it happened when he was much younger.
"I tell you, I don't know too much about steroids, but I started listening about steroids when they started to bring that (expletive) up," Ortiz told the paper. "I started realizing and getting to know a little bit about it. You've got to be careful.
"I used to buy a protein shake in my country. I don't do that anymore because they don't have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I'm off buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican (Republic). But it can happen anytime, it can happen. I don't know. I don't know if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it."
However, Ortiz, who hit a club-record 54 home runs last season, made light of the situation, joking that he should try steroids just to see what all the fuss is about.
"I should use steroids just to see what's going on," Ortiz joked to the Herald. "Nah. I have a good family. I want to see my kids learn and develop. I think I'm having an OK career. So, I take a lot of Advils, but I think I'm going to stop taking them. They say it (expletive) your liver."
Ortiz spent six non-descript seasons in Minnesota before signing with the Red Sox before the 2003 season. He has quickly become a Boston icon and one of the most popular players in baseball.
In 2004, Ortiz anchored a Red Sox squad which won the franchise's first World Series in 86 years - highlighted by a shocking comeback against the rival New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.
The Red Sox became the first team in baseball history to come back from a three-games-to-none deficit to win a playoff series.

Kicking ass tonight....But removing Beckett w/ only 88 pitches...I guess it prevents blisters...good game tonight. I agreed with taking him out after thge 7th, big lead and a long wait between innings, he cruised through after the leadoff HR. What a difference a year makes, he's a completely different guy than the post all star break last year.
