Should have went with the Inspiron 1525 - they upgraded the system to the 25 because the 20 was... lacking, to put it nicely. It's a toss-up as to Vista - I got it with my new laptop and so far I haven't run into trouble, but I had a web developer buddy set it up for me.

I jumped on the one day deal two weeks ago and got a system with an Intel Duo 2 Core, 2 gig Ram, 120 gig hard drive, integrated webcam, Integrated 10/100 Network Card and DVD burner for 800, though.
But that's the nature of the beast. There'll be a better system than mine in a few weeks and I'll be thinking the same thing. If you like your system, don't worry about it.

The last time I took this stupid test, dual core chips didn't even register with it. It seemed to think 2gz CPU was too slow. It didn't take in account that 1 meg of l2 cache is a lot more faster than a celeron with 256K of L2 Cache at 3.2gz. Microsoft seems to have forgotten that the CPU's are going faster with slower clock speeds.

True, but comparitively speaking, you have a low end dual core processor. The good dual cores that score in the mid to high 5's have 4, 6, or 8MB of cache.

Uh, 2.75GB is all thats visible? Thats your motherboard, not your OS. Vista 32 will see 8GB of RAM. Sounds like your mobo only sees 4.62 (assuming your numbers listed here are right) GB of RAM. Remember, your dedicated video RAM uses the same addressing as system RAM, so the RAM cap applies to both COMBINED. Also, youve got some system RAM shared to video, (768*2 = 1536MB vRAM, not 1918... so you have 382MB shared..) In otherwords, you have a shitty motherboard. Get one with an 8GB RAM cap and youll be fine.

Y'know, after having Vista one week and eliminating all the bloatware and tweaking this shit out of it, I'm finding its not really too bad. Sure, I turned off the UAC and and went back to the classic menu, but I'm finding its not really that slow.
Initially I was ready to return this system and have them put in XP, but its basically the same speed now as my older system.
Thoughts?

I agree totally. I just went to Vista at work, and after making it livable, it's not too bad. I tried to do it at home, but I'm having a helluva time finding SATA drivers (Ali M5289) for my mobo. I might just upgrade though, I'm only running a single core here.

Sounds like the same Acer laptop I had Vista Home on. That thing had no business running Vista even when I added an extra 1GB to the 512mb it came with.
I won't even mention the touchpad button breaking off after 2 weeks.

Same here. I got a Vista laptop last year. I really like Vista. After tweaking the shit out of it as much as I could. I checked out a bunch of "tweak guides" and have always like black viper's stuff. www.blackviper.com Just look for the Vista tweaking stuff.
I like the vista look and found that just turning transparency off or just using the Vista basic look on the windows, helped a bunch. It didn't change my score, but a noticeable performance improvement.

The score is messed up. My complaint is the real world performance of slower clocked athlon chips compared to crappy Pentium and Celeron D's. A single Core Athon 64, with a decent graphics card, is faster than Pentium D's and Celeron D's, the whole Pentium Line.

2.9 overall score, on my acer laptop. Thats good, right?Probably your main deficiency is memory. My Acer laptop cost me $400, spent $80 to put 2G of Ram into it. It's great for what I use it for... which is mainly websurfing, and I also hook it up to my hdtv via dvi cable and watch downloaded movies.
The vista experience score, or whateverthefuck they call it, is irrelevant. It all boils down to this... "is your computer doing what you need it to?".
